Today we are harvesting our de Toro But do you know what are the difference between Tinta de Toro ( unique from this place) and Tinta de Pais or Tempranillo? ? Tinta de Toro and Tinta del Pais are both grape varieties that are primarily grown in Spain, particularly in the region of Toro. While they share certain similarities, there are some differences between the two:

1. Origins: Tinta de Toro is believed to be a local clone of the Tempranillo grape variety, which is the same grape known as Tinta del Pais elsewhere in Spain. Both grapes are genetically very similar, but Tinta de Toro has adapted to the specific climate and soil conditions and the huge difference in temperature between the daytime and the cool nights.

2. Climate adaptability: Due to the specific environmental conditions in the Toro region, Tinta de Toro has developed thicker skins compared to its counterpart, Tinta del Pais. This adaptation helps protect the grapes against the region's harsh climate, with hot, dry summers and cold winters.

3. Wine characteristics: Wines made from both Tinta de Toro and Tinta del Pais grapes can display similar flavor profiles. However, Tinta de Toro wines tend to be richer and more full-bodied, with ripper tannins. These wines often have intense fruit flavors, such as blackberry and plum, along with earthy and herbal notes. Tinta del Pais wines, on the other hand, usually exhibit a slightly lighter and softer phenolic content, with less tannins and flavors of red fruits like strawberry and cherry.

It is worth noting that both grape varieties are highly regarded for producing high-quality wines. The choice between the two often depends on personal preference and if you didn’t drink one Tinta de Toro wine before I high recommend you to try our Mazas Crianza 100% Tinta de Toro from an dry grown vineyard that was planted in 1920 ( that’s an old plot). This wine stays in French barrels for at least 18 months and it’s ready to enjoy now.
