2015 is the year of Barca-Velha: Nine years after an "excellent" harvest in the Douro, the decision has been made. Barca-Velha 2015 hits the market before summer.
From 1952 to today, only 21 harvests were worthy of bearing the "Barca-Velha" label. An oenological decision that at Sogrape is received with a mix of celebration and responsibility. “The announcement of a new Barca-Velha is always a very special moment of great joy. On the one hand, there is the pride of seeing the birth of one of the most emblematic and recognized national wines, and on the other, the awareness of the essential care to write a new chapter in this unique history in the wine sector”, comments Fernando da Cunha Guedes, president of Sogrape.
Gracefulness, character and persistence are some of the adjectives that winemaker Luís de Sottomayor uses to describe the wine, but it was his aging capacity that dictated the final judgment regarding Barca-Velha 2015. “It was a short and atypical harvest, but very prosperous in quality, marked by little rain and two heat waves in June and July, which contributed to the production of very complex wines, with good structure and very present fruit”, describes the person responsible for whom there has always been a “huge conviction regarding to the fate of this harvest.”
Declared only in "truly exceptional" years, Barca-Velha has, since its creation, been made with selected grapes from different altitudes in the Douro Superior. Quinta da Leda, with 170 hectares of vineyards, currently gives rise to the majority of the plot made up of the region's traditional grape varieties.
Barca Velha 2015 will hit the market in June this year.

Raised by the Alves family, founder of Riberalves Group, AdegaMãe is born as a tribute from the men to the family’s matriarch, Manuela Alves. At the same time, it serves as an inspiration to a place of birth and creation, in which the intention is to enhance the best grapes and to create the finest wines.
🍷 The Adega Mãe Merlot red wine presents a deep ruby red and notes of bell pepper, plum and cloves on the nose. Full-bodied, stiff tannins and a long, persistent finish.
Try it.

On the nose, the Cortes de Cima Daqui red wine shows red fruits, holy grass and pepper. On the palate, firm but balanced tannins give the wine complexity. Long, velvety aftertaste. A wine that pays homage to summer: fresh, aromatic and complex.
Despite being a summer wine, Daqui shows the fresher, uncomplicated side of the Alentejo. This wine is a fine accompaniment to Italian food or grilled meats. It's also perfect as an aperitif.
Don't miss it.

The Conciso White presents a beautiful lemon-yellow colour. Delicate and engaging aroma with a lovely harmony between white fruits, aromatic herbs and an overall mineral character. Pleasantly full and slightly unctuous body is beautifully counterbalanced by the wine’s mineral character, fresh fruit and acidity. It goes well with dishes based on cod and other fatty fish, local sausages and Serra da Estrela cheeses.
Be sure to try it.

Horácio Simões was founded by José Carvalho Simões in 1910. Horácio Simões Moscatel Bastardo is a dessert wine produced in the Region of Setúbal. The grapes harvested by hand are stalked and crushed, followed by fermentation with maceration of the films to extract the best constituents. The addition of wine spirit establishes the balance between the body and the aroma of the wine. Beautiful amber, dark. Aroma complex: compote, figs, spices and nuts. Taste round, very soft and fresh.
Try it.

Filipa Pato Nossa red is the result of a two-way project between Filipa Pato and her husband, for the desire to produce a wine that expresses the full potential of the terroir of Óis do Bairro.
This wine presents a deep cherry red, and baga aromas of red fruit overlaid with a rocky, mineral character. Rich in fruit with just a light influence of oak. Well structured as much by freshness as by tannin. Sweet fruited, juicy, long finish. Pairs well with grilled meats and stews.

With this suggestion, we say goodbye to October.

Welcome, November. Our suggestion for today is the Arvad Negra Mole red wine.
Arvad was born in 2016, on a property next to Arade river, overlooking Silves, Algarve. On a background of cherry and fresh raspberry notes, some aromatic herbs are delicately combined in this Negra Mole.
Don't miss it.

Branco Especial by Quinta dos Carvalhais is a white wine with no harvest year, which confirms the excellence of Dão in the production of great whites and the guardian potential that characterizes the wines of the region. It is a dense and austere wine that presents in the mouth a great aromatic amplitude. The acidity is very lively and is very well balanced with the richness of tertiary aromas and the oak notes conferred by the years of life in barrels
It can be served with baked fish dishes, well seasoned fish, cod, or even game, more complex red meat such as roast lamb.

The aroma of Primado white wine reveals the exuberance of the Encruzado grape variety, showing a more varietal, floral nose at first, revealing aromas of fresh fruit, with some tropical notes and wild herbs. In the mouth, its exuberance is remarkable and progressive. The exceptional balance between acidity and alcohol gives it great elegance and a long finish, revealing aromatic complexity and intensity of flavour.
This wine goes well with fresh food typical of the warmer seasons, but it is also well suited to strong dishes, particularly oven-roasted fish, cod, some meats and cheeses.
Be sure to try it.
