Jack Facts from our friend Mike Northcutt:
In the last 150 years, one of Tennessee's most famous trademarks has been Jack Daniel's whiskey. The man, Jack Daniel, who would go on to become one of the nation's most recognizable distillers got his start as a young boy in the backwoods of middle Tennessee. Although his name is universally known around the world, the story of his life has been shrouded in mystery and legend. Many of the stories about him came from folklore and twisted rumors, and are not necessarily true. Here are a few facts I have gathered over the years from historical documents, newspaper articles, and family history of the Daniel records:
1) Jack Daniel's brother (Lemual Austin Daniel) died in the Civil War. He was a Confederate soldier.
2) Jack Daniel's sister Elizabeth, and her husband John Conner, had two children that died in infancy.
3) Jack Daniel's Distillery was 1 of 15 distillery's in Lincoln (Moore) County in 1866. 19 distillery's were shut down in Moore County in 1909 when Tennessee went dry.
4) Jack's first whiskey sold for $1/gallon.
5) Jack Daniel was baptized in Mulberry Creek at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in April, 1909.
6) The 1880 U.S. Census shows 5 people living in Jack Daniels home at that time: Jack Daniel, 30 years old, white male, farmer; J.S. (John) Conner, 48 years old, white male, brother-in-law, married, carpenter; Bette E. Conner, 40 years old, white female, sister, married, keeping house; Nick Evans, 28 years old, white male, single, works on farm; Lu Motlow, 16 years old, black female, single, housework.
7) Lem Motlow acquired the Jack Daniel Distillery in 1907.
8) Jack Daniel was the first in Tennessee to use hot-air balloons as a promotional tool and often fascinated the locals with his advertising antics.
9) Jack Daniel mainly tried to stay in the middle of the road politically, but mostly supported the Republican Party.
10) Jack Daniel's popularity became worldwide after he won the Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
11) Jack Daniel's first black label bottle was in 1912 (after his death). All previous bottles were green label.
