Breeding Oriental Black Jap over Black Macrae.
Jim Clem Is Back!
The breeder of the famous Oregon Black Japs, Jim Clem, is breeding chicken again.
After an absence of almost a decade from the gamefowl scene during which he developed a dairy goat farm, Jim decided to go back to his old love - breeding chicken.
Right now he has a few heads of the Ray Price Blacks and the Black Japs.
He is willing to share these materials to other breeders in the Philippines.
Reach him through his Facebook messenger @James L Clem.

Spotting Future Breeders!
Checking on my cockerels early today, I saw a 4-month-old Black Jap which I believe would make a good broodcock later.
The jetblack cockerel is 3/4 Ray Price Black and 1/4 Japsil, both lines from my friend and now Dairy Goat farmer Jim Clem of Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Future breeders are easy to spot even at a young age.
They actually stand out in the flock and strut around with confidence of a warrior.
Six months from now, this jetblack cockerel will be in the breeding pen.

Breeding Colors!
Gamefowl buddies had been asking me why I breed off-color chicken when there is not much demand in the market for them.
Well, first I don't breed to sell which simply means I am not a commercial gamefowl breeder.
I breed simply for the love of gamefowls.
Second, I find fulfillment in mixing colors and seeing how they turn out.
So, I breed Blacks, Whites, Pumpkins, Greys, Black Greys, Barred Doms, Blues and Spangled.
This year, I am producing Spangled fowls which would be 1/4 Japsil 1/4 Travis Clark Kelso and one-half Maclean Hatch.
Of course, the expected color of offsprings would be Spangled with White and Yellow legs.

Breeding Whites!
This is a yard of a young Zamboanga White rooster over pullets which are 1/2 ZW 1/2 Boston White.
The Z-White family in my farm, originally bred by the late Boy Primalion, came from Jake Macasaet while the B-White came from Master Breeder Lance dela Torre.
This year, I also set up a new White line using White Kelso from Clinton Sotto of California over ZW/BW Pullets.
(Note: Braveheart Game Farm is not a commercial farm thus our fowls are not for sale.)

Jared Walker Leiper Hatch
Young, Honest Breeder!
Late last year, I saw online a post by a young gamefowl breeder from Arkansas which featured his two Hatch lines, Leiper and Penny.
I asked Jared Walker to share with me his best Hatch line and he sent me 7 pullets and hens and one stag of the Leipers which originally came from Rat Graves.
Much to my delight, the Leipers that he sent me were all healthy and good looking and worth every dollar that I paid for.
Jared is the kind of young gamefowl breeder that our fraternity needs, honest and trustworthy.
Thank you, Jared!

Richard Bates Greys
Breeding The Iconic
Richard Bates Greys
In the year 2000, I took my family on a long trip from Los Angeles, California to Davis, Oklahoma in search for a family of Greys which was reported to be among the most outstanding lines.
Indeed, when I arrived at the farm of Larry Carter, I was introduced to a Grey family bred by Richard Bates before he moved to the Philippines.
Since then, I have kept the Richard Bates Greys in my farm and I intend to perpetuate the line which I believe is one of the gamest birds I had ever owned.
They cross well with Hatches and my brother, Jun, had been successful in blending them with Chet and Bonecrusher Hatches.
They don't win all the battles but they are simply outstanding gladiators and Richard Bates, when I met him a few years before he passed away, described this family of Greys as "the best fowls I had ever owned."

Japsil-Macrae
Japsil Over Macrae
Most of the lines I breed in the farm now carry Oriental blood, mostly one quarter or one-eighth.
To do this, I start with a cross of a straight Japsil bred by Jim Clem of Oregon over Ray Price, Richard Bates Grey, Spangled Hatch and Kelso and lately Black Macrae from Bobby Jones.
The half Japsil fowls are then bred with the straight lines to reduce the Oriental blood to a quarter or 1/8.
This video shows the first step done by breeding a pure Japsil over Black Macraes.
