Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.

How’s that Christmas shopping going? Got it all done or given up and heading for the hills maybe, either way, at least we have a summer this year!

Let’s start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.

Saturday:
High Tide 334pm - Low tide at 912am
Sunday:
High Tide 355am and 428pm - Low tide at 1005am

Best Fishing:
Saturday 1207pm
Sunday 109pm

We have a Full Moon on Sunday so it will be pretty bright during the night and what better time to spend the evening on the beach fishing for Ellies.

From my Met Office information on Tuesday, all looks OK this week except for a few showers possible on Saturday as the nor wester changes south west, otherwise pretty nice right through.

The Waitaki flow is looking solid on Tuesday at around 413+ cumecs after a weekly peak of around 486 cumecs, so this flow coupled with higher tides could make for dangerous surges at the mouth, watch for that and always wear a life jacket down there.
The likes of Bells Pond And Bortons Pond will be higher too so the flow might catch you by surprise there.
If camping below any of the dams, choose higher ground while there are bigger flows in the basin, easier to setup high than shift to higher ground in the middle of the night!

Now, this is the nuts and bolts of our reports for the month and into January so make best of your surroundings whether hunting, fishing, camping or boating and feel free to post pictures of your holiday adventures on our Waitaki Angling and Outdoors page on Facebook, we’d love to see them!

OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this week at TackleShop General Store?

• Huge top up from Campmaster, Oztrail and Quest is here again this year!
• Super Kobra have been topped up to capacity again.
• Wow, come in and check out the new bag stock with new wallets, handbags and utility carriers with bill-folds, cardholders and phone pocket all in one, ideal if going out for dinner etc.
• More knives arrived this week
• Chilly Bins and camp beds due this week
• More tents chairs and general camping products also due this week
• Other top ups include Walex camp chemicals, Ammo, Bait (freezers now full)
• If you can’t figure out a gift for that special outdoorsy person, why not give a TackleShop gift voucher, we have any denomination you need.

Righto, that’s it, it all completes this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.

This week it’s Jean’s choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot of 80’s tracks.

This will turn a few heads I am sure! Jean has chosen this track from Peter Gabriel, In your Eyes.
I can’t recall this one but it is very soothing and Peter Gabriel is one of Jean’s all time favourites, hope you enjoy it too.

03/12/24

Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.

The heat is on, summer has arrived!.

And here we go as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.

Saturday:
High Tide 905am and 930pm - Low tide at 312pm
Sunday:
High Tide 1000am and 1027pm - Low tide at 408pm

Best Fishing:
Saturday 610am or 635pm
Sunday 659am or 723pm

Either day looks good with good weather forecast and good tides for a beach mission.

The Waitaki flow is still a bit high on Tuesday morning again at around 340 cumecs after a weekly peak of around 405 cumecs, that should be ok for the Kahawai and Trout hunters bin the Waitaki Mouth area

Watersport and water usage in the Waihau River is affected currently by very high Nitrate levels so anglers should take note of this, taking fish may not be good for your health.

Canals are a better option at present as the fish are spread widely and have been succumbing to many varied methods so be prepared to mix it up while up there.
Egg rolling is still a preferred option while some have found instant success with flies.
A particularly good fly up there producing is the Alder and I often refer to this pattern, now hard to get but we have some imported from the UK, right here at Tackleshop.
If softbaiting, Gulp have a Rainbow pattern which works well for Salmon and the Smelt pattern takes care of all others and Salmon too.

Otherwise, soft baits in Black and silver work well up there and any combination of silver red or silver blue will usually bring about some reaction, we can assist with those here at TackleShop.

If Tassies and Kobras are your preference there are loads here now on the wall for your selection, with more on order due here any day now.

Inland lakes are also doing really well and a ripper was caught in Aviemore last weekend, a Brown Trout weighing over 7kg!
These monsters come in close this time of year and I recall seeing huge Trout in Benmore with smaller fish in their mouth. If you can fish a bigger lure, sometimes it may pay off.
If the lure has multiple hook setups, do not remove any as all too often a Trout will take a lure side on and that is why there is a set of hooks under the body of lures like Rapalas.

Make sure you invest in a decent size landing net as your prized catch may well slip back out of a smaller mouth net. Longer handles are good too so if you need to reach for the fish you have handle length to enable this.

Sea fishing is firing too locally with lots of Elephantfish reported.
Use a smaller hook, ideally 4/0 to 5/0 in circle or recurve to increase your chances.
Mussels are the better bait it seems as Squid often attracts Dogfish and Carpet Sharks but they are not fussed with Mussels. Prawns are also a useful bait but often harder to find in a small town like ours.
For handy ready to fish rigs and spare traces check out the range here at TackleShop
Boat anglers will be happy with the flasher rigs on offer here too as we have four big brands available and these are all great for Blue Cod and can even prove useful on the beach for surfcasting.
Our own Hot Shotz Lil Shrimpy is back this year as Jean has made a range exclusive to our shop and they’re not even available online so call in for those great rigs.

Hunters will be doing more dawn and dusk missions now as the heat of the day pushes animals into dark shaded areas. If you are up to a walk in the brighter hours, walk deliberately in and around scrub and be ready for quick shooting as often animals will bolt away as you approach.
Shotgun is ideal for this snap shooting style and on Wallabies, use 3’s or 4’s and ideally in lead unless close to water where Steel shot restrictions may apply. I believe that is 200m from water for steel.
DOC land is out of bounds for shotguns so you may need to change your approach if in that area to one of sit and wait with centrefire or allow a wider field of vision for your shot.
Keep your eyes about you for cast deer antlers too about now as they shake the timber off in readiness for the velvet in the new year. Antler is great for the dog to chew and is preferable over bones or rawhide. The latter has been attracting some bad press of late due to the processes in manufacture of rawhide leather bones and the additives used when making them. Plus if the knotted ends separate and are swallowed they can cause blockages inside your best friend and require expensive vet treatment. So that inexpensive Christmas treat for your dog, may cost you dearly down the track. Find them some antler instead.

OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this week at TackleShop General Store?

• Mussels arrived late last week and are all bagged up, and selling flat out!
• Tazzies restocked and colours added
• Super Kobras ordered, due any day
• Responding to popular demand, we have more multi tools in stock, fantastic Christmas present idea!
• McGregor seeds are selling flat out for local gardeners
• New Ladies’ wallets from Buxton in stock already and more coming!
• Two logfires from Kent and Metro, ex stock specials at crazy savings prices available now, Free Delivery within Waimate urban area.
• Gas regulators back in stock.
• Watch for our entry in the Santa Parade in Waimate this Saturday morning!

Righto, that’s this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.

This week it’s my choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot.

This week’s track is one that instantly gets the head nodding and foot tapping.
A great vocal too from a most unlikely looking bloke with a similarly interesting name, here’s Teddy Swims with Lose Control.
It was released on June 23, 2023, it is Swims' first song to reach the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 99 and peaking at number one in March 2024.

Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.
That summer is closing in and officially Sunday is the first day of the summer season, let’s see how good it will be.
Let’s start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.
Saturday:
High Tide 354pm - Low tide at 1007am
Sunday:
High Tide 451am and 522pm - Low tide at 1050am
Best Fishing:
Saturday 1221pm
Sunday 111pm
We have a New Moon on Sunday so it will be pretty dark, not as I suggested last time on a New Moon phase, sorry about that.
These tides are still great for anglers as the fish are less spooked by movement but keep torchlight away from the water’s edge, fish are not keen on being dazzled in the darkness.
From my Met Office information on Tuesday, all looks OK this week except for some South East rain Friday but should pass through for a nice day Saturday and partly cloudy for Sunday!
The Waitaki flow is looking huge on Tuesday at around 588+ cumecs after a weekly peak of around 648 cumecs, be careful if using the river, there will still be high flows due to west coast heavy rain that has crossed the divide and filled up lakes.
The Ikawai camera was really no help on Tuesday at midday but at best again the Waitaki looked discoloured so expect the likes of Bells Pond and Bortons to be the same and high as they were two weeks back.
Those fishing for Trout locally have had heaps of fun with sea runs aplenty especially in our local rivers but further up the highway at the Opihi and Orari as it has carried a lot of volume lately and the mouth should still be well established there. The Waihau Box is however closed now but a trickle passes under the main box structure, be careful on the shingle around those edges.
Lakes are again producing as more get out and about.
I received some mention from a Waihi angler who was through our district a couple of weeks ago and he had a great stay over at Lake Wardell after catching a ripper trout in Ohau A canal.
See his post on Waitaki Angling and Outdoors page with his fantastic catch!
Thanks for the accolades Gus!
Now, Lake Wardell is just a few clicks past the bridge on SH8 crossing the Pukaki Canal, near the Mt Cook turn off. There is a large pond area and plenty of shelter there and apparently some good Trout to be caught too, no Salmon in there sorry! Fly Spin Bait fishing methods are OK there and it is a high country season for there so open now until April 30th. Boat fishing is not excluded although always check local regulations before dipping the trailer.
Lures ideally, should be Black Gold patterns like Toby, Dandy etc and soft plastics on 1/8 to 1/4oz jigheads retrieved close to the bottom. Berkley Gulp Minnow twitched on retrieve should be deadly in there or a paddle tail to keep the bait lively.
Fly fishers should use those typical high country brown beetle patterns, Cochy Bondhu, Alder, Irresistible Adams too. There isn’t as much pressure on this spot so fish should be worth catching and if releasing, keep them right at the waters edge.
Canals are going OK with some fantastic Trout and Salmon being caught recently.
Those new Chinook colours will be ideal now as the fish have not seen them before unlike many other lure patterns.
Ohau C still has a lot of smaller fish annoying anglers but there are some good Browns in there also preying on smaller Salmon especially. Soft plastics in up to 4” in those silvery patterns should get the desired result.
The flow into Ohau A has been up there lately and hard to keep lures deep enough without marching it downstream a distance so fish heavier but as soon as the bottom is felt, lift the rod tip to avoid costly snags.
All the usual rules apply for the rest of the area, fish the bottom, change of light, evenings etc, go shopping when hot and for when it’s sunny take insect repellent and sunscreen.
For hunters, there are plenty of Wallabies about and I would now suggest the doc blocks as most are shaded from seasonal bright sunlight.
Rabbits are still posing a problem for landowners as are pigeons and starlings. We have birdshot in stock and can guide you to the best option for your situation.
If you have issues with these three nuisances, call in and let us organise a visit to reduce the problem for you.
OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this weekat TackleShop General Store?
More collapsible camp sinks and stuff arrived in time for the summer camp season
More in the Garden dept with McGregor w**d sprays back in stock
Flower seeds topped up for country gardens etc
Waterproof over-trousers topped up so a full size range there now.
More rods in from ABU, Veritas now on the rack, these are amazing!
Gulp Minnow Soft plastic baits restocked too.
12g Lead 3’s and 4’s in limited supply but more coming
Another shipment of Marlborough Mussels here mid week this week!
From the Daiwa camp, more new colour Chinooks, tackle boxes, Bait Ju**ie softies and some brand new release lures similar to Rapala shape, all on the wall this week!
Two Hatsan 22’s (air) on the wall, one nitro piston and the other non gas.
Righto, that’s it, it all completes this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.
This week it’s Jean’s choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot.
This will turn a few heads I am sure! Jean has chosen this trackfrom One Republic and Timberland version of Apologise.
It is one we both like and it has even been a ringtone on Jean’s phone for a while, as you do.

Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.

Ahhh, settled weather again, but watch out Thursday, it might not be that pleasant.

Anyway, this week we start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.

Saturday:
High Tide 1051am - Low tide at 440am and 453pm
Sunday:
High Tide 1140am - Low tide at 530am and 544pm

Best Fishing:
Saturday 730am or 754pm
Sunday 815am or 835pm

Either day looks good with good weather but again Sunday looks to be the pick with a great low tide right on daylight.

With a few nor-westers in the mix, coastal fishers will like the tail wind for casting but remember lakes get short sharp choppy in wind and a southerly usually follows a nor wester.

Tides levels are back to around 2.0m for high so pretty easy for access and low surges make it a bit less unpredictable.

The Waitaki flow is looking a bit up there on Tuesday morning again at around 480 cumecs after a weekly peak of around 580 cumecs, apparently releasing a heap of water from that west coast rain in the last couple of weeks.
Remember not to camp near the water edge as you may get wet feet without notice.

Our local rivers are still firing with sea run trout and the Waihau Box is open again albeit quite narrow, providing for relatively easy access for trout chasers.
Watch the shingle close to the water though as the river flows underground and this can be treacherous.
Use silvery or whitebait type soft plastics or small silver spinners for best results.

Canals are still ticking along although the reports are thinner reflected by the reduced angler numbers frequenting the area now. This compares to previous years when hundreds would flock to the various hot spots but it is much easier now to get a park and fish quietly.
Expect that to change over the weeks to come as holiday makers stop and try their luck.
Egg rolling and soft bait bottom bouncing seems to be the norm at present but bait anglers will be happy to hear, anchovies arrive again due mid week!

Soft baits in Black and silver work well up there and any combination of silver red or silver blue will usually bring about some reaction, we can assist with those here at TackleShop.

Inland lakes are also doing really well especially Benmore at present.
Recent rains had the lakes looking like dirty dishwater but as they clear again the fish have come back on the feed.
There are some exciting new lures on the wall we can recommend for the lakes in our district and beyond, we’ll be happy to point you to those.
Otherwise, black toby, Tassies and Cobras seem to be the most frequented lures, just aim for colours out of left field as they say, the fish know all the other ones.

Still a bit of hunting happening around the DOC blocks and forestry areas with pigs becoming more populated in various areas. This happens for many reasons and one brought to my attention this week was die partly to the increase of housing in the areas where pigs once reigned supreme. They now can often be seen around these new properties much to the dismay of the new landowners who may not realise they bought and built in a wild animal patch. The pigs don’t understand the new rules and take some time before taken out or driven out. They are a dangerous animal when confronted or cornered so don’t try to be the hero if you find yourself facing off with a wild one, they are armed with nasty tusks and know how to use them. Seek assistance from hunters who can deal with them for you if you are not equipped to take the problem on yourself. Call in and ask at TackleShop and we can steer you in the right direction for a safe solution.

OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this week at TackleShop General Store?

• Gulp soft plastics have been restocked this week and a couple of new colours added.
• We have a bigger range of our Hot Shotz Surf Rigs and a new one there for Elephantfish especially.
• Camping gear is becoming increasingly popular too.
• A further top up of indoor plants has arrived and look beautiful.
• Some 12 gauge lead had arrived and some 30 30 as well, be quick for those.
• Fresh stock of Mussel bait for Elephantfish due in again this week.
• More specials in Black Magic as we rip into them and reduce their patch on the wall in favour of new brands.

Righto, that’s this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.

This week it’s my choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot.

The track I have selected this week takes me back to a time in my life when motivational business ideas were everywhere. This was one of those lively numbers we listened to in order we would get fired up and head out and build our businesses among our friend. Motivational vocals would be recorded over the original and in the gaps and it just worked for us.

I absolutely love this and many of you will too, it’s by a little known singer called John Parr out of 1985, being the theme song of the movie by the same name. St Elmo’s Fire, was apparently created and edited in just 24 hours!
He is pretty famous around movie sets as he wrote no less than ten title tracks for various other movies, Wikipedia have a really good write up about him.

14/11/2024

Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.

What a busy time of the year. The spring weather is finally settling despite a couple of chilly southerly fronts but should be a great weekend, make the best of it.

Anyway, we have a slightly shorter report this week again and we start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.

Saturday:
High Tide 410am and 441pm - Low tide at 1020am
Sunday:
High Tide 504am and 537pm - Low tide at 1115am

Best Fishing:
Saturday 125pm
Sunday 227pm

We have a Full Moon on Saturday so you can expect bigger spring tides this week up to a 2.4m tide Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon and the low is at 0.5m both days of the weekend.

These tides are excellent for chasing sea species and sea run trout if you can get near a river mouth that is still open after the last southerly blast on Monday.

From my Met Office information on Tuesday, all looks OK this week except for some showers Thursday through Saturday but clear again Sunday!

Canterbury rivers are all high and dirty as of the start of the week except the Opihi, Orari, Pareora and other smaller streams on SH1 between Waimate and Ashburton anyway.
It will take some time for the main snow fed rivers to come right, they are huge at present.

The Waitaki flow is looking huge on Tuesday at around 500+ cumecs after a weekly peak of around similar volume, be careful if using the river, there will be high flows due to west coast heavy rain that has crossed the divide and filled up lakes.
I looked at the Ikawai camera but the Waitaki looked discoloured so expect the likes of Bells Pond and Bortons to be the same and high.

Those fishing for Trout have reported some great catches in the Waitaki catchment especially and with the Waihau box having been open until last weekend, there have been heaps of sea runs in the river system, even I had some fun last week with a few.

Side streams of the Waitaki have still been producing and I would suggest access through Bells Pond, Stonewall etc but again watch if crossing small streams to get to bigger water.

Canals are going OK with several Salmon being reported in the under 10lb bracket and a few over that. Browns are in good nick and some are even being silly in daylight hours so keep the lines wet if up there and lures on the bottom.
The same old rule applies at this time of year:
Fish the bottom, change of light, evenings etc, go shopping when hot and sunny.

Hunters are also finding some success lately with some North Island visitors here last weekend nailing about 9 Wallabies, a Pig and Hare for their first ever Waimate shoot.
They called in for some local advice and I helped with a favourite spot details and sure enough, they were well happy when they called me back.
Rabbits are on the increase and they provide some really good table fare for the family and are great in a pie. Get stuck in!

OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this week at TackleShop General Store?

• Top news this week, Chinook lures in the most preferred colours are topped up
• New Chinook lures in 25gm on the wall ready for early Salmon or Kahawai anglers
• Clock Radios and Portable radios are our newest range added and selling fast!
• New camping and outdoors layout for your ease and makes finding product so much better
• Fishing area has expanded at last and soft plastics display is up on the wall and also going well.
• Led Lenser rechargeable headlamps now back in stock!
• New Mainlander waders in stock looking great!

Righto, that’s it, that covers all I had in this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.

This week it’s Jean’s choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot.

This will turn a few heads I am sure! Jean has chosen this great from legendary band, Kiss, I was made for loving you.
It is a song by the American hard rock band, originally released on their 1979 album, Dynasty. Get the face paint out and join in!
Jean always finds some amazing track from way back and this is no exception, we are both sure you will enjoy this.

09-10 NOV24

Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.

Another week, another month, we are closing in on Christmas so have you checked all your camping and outdoor stuff? Not long to go now.

Anyway, this week’s is a bit briefer than last week’s so we start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.

Saturday:
High Tide 1028am - Low tide at 420am and 434pm
Sunday:
High Tide 1122am - Low tide at 514am and 529pm

Best Fishing:
Saturday 722am or 748pm
Sunday 813am or 838pm

Either day looks good with partly cloudy settled weather before possible showers to start next week off.

Best day in my opinion would be Sunday again but why not hit the outdoors both days while the weather is in our favour?

We are all hoping for some nor-westers to clear the w**d off the local beaches, this has been a significant issue for anglers surfcasting and equally as bad for offshore craft like kontikis and drones.

Tides levels are static at around 2.0m for high but will increase with the Full moon waxing to next week’s full.

The Waitaki flow is looking a bit up there on Tuesday morning at around 410 cumecs after a weekly peak of around 561 cumecs.

Our local rivers are all producing plenty of sea run trout as the silveries and whitebait provide a lucrative food source for them all.
The main whitebait season is now ended although some people may still be baiting if they are acting under their Maori fishing rights which are not covered by DOC legislation.
That is all I wish to say on this controversial matter other than if you do see this activity don’t even start a discussion with those involved.
Any comment should be directed to your local MP, enough said.

Canals are starting to produce again and a recent report of a release/escape has seen many flocking to the canals to try for one or more of those 4 to 6lb Salmon, perfect eating size.

Soft baits in Black and silver work well and we can assist with those here at TackleShop along with all other requirements such as the right jigheads for depth current etc.

There are still no anchovies available so shrimps are the preference for bait fishers or you could try to gather some silveries from local beaches and take them up to the MacKenzie for a bash.

Inland lakes are also doing really well as the high country season kicked off last weekend.
Lake Heron went well as idi Coleridge for those who ventured inland.
It is a tradition many never miss and one I do sincerely miss having missed for many years now for various reasons.
One must make time to play!

Still no reports on hunting apart from the increased numbers of Wallabies as they regenerate after the mid year 1080 sweeps.
If you have sightings or a problem with Wallabies, Rabbits, Hares, Canada Geese (now gazetted as a pest), come in and let’s chat and work out a plan to assist you.

OK that’s the weekly catch up, what has been happening this week at TackleShop General Store?

• Black Magic lures in Rainbow and Brown Trout colours are on the wall now and we have Rattle Snack lures all topped up.
• Daiwa Chinooks, always so popular, are all sorted after a recent revamp and more gaps will fill up by the end of the week
• Camping gear is selling fast too as many stock up for Christmas
• Merino socks and workwear socks have been restocked
• New waders just arrived on Tuesday and they look fantastic, these replace the Desolve waders that have come to the end of their run with us, just a couple of pairs left in those as we transition.
• Fresh stock of Mussel bait for Elephantfish anglers are in right now.
• More 7mm08 rounds have arrived too and a great price there, available in two weights

Righto, that’s this week’s report, so on to our weekly request spot.

This week it’s my choice again and you will hear this on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday around 1pm as it heads off our sponsored radio spot.

Last time I opted for the obvious themed track about fishing in the dark, funnily Stu found that same song by another artist in the week leading up to it and played it on the Tuesday.
This week, despite briefing Stu about my pick, I have stepped into left field again and hope you enjoy this somewhat random selection.

I have many fond memories of when my Grandparents bought their first TV and my Grandad was instantly in love with this singer.
Although she was in black and white, that made no difference.
I hope you have such fond memories of your early years, cherish them.
This then, for my dear old departed Grandad, Dusty Springfield from 1966, appropriately, “You don’t have to say you love me”,
