Hi there, here’s your Weekly Catch Up for Waimate District, brought to you by Jean and Lyndsey at TackleShop General Store.
That summer is closing in and officially Sunday is the first day of the summer season, let’s see how good it will be.
Let’s start as usual with the area tide times and best fishing times from Ocean Fun for the weekend ahead.
Saturday:
High Tide 354pm - Low tide at 1007am
Sunday:
High Tide 451am and 522pm - Low tide at 1050am
Best Fishing:
Saturday 1221pm
Sunday 111pm
We have a New Moon on Sunday so it will be pretty dark, not as I suggested last time on a New Moon phase, sorry about that.
These tides are still great for anglers as the fish are less spooked by movement but keep torchlight away from the water’s edge, fish are not keen on being dazzled in the darkness.
From my Met Office information on Tuesday, all looks OK this week except for some South East rain Friday but should pass through for a nice day Saturday and partly cloudy for Sunday!
The Waitaki flow is looking huge on Tuesday at around 588+ cumecs after a weekly peak of around 648 cumecs, be careful if using the river, there will still be high flows due to west coast heavy rain that has crossed the divide and filled up lakes.
The Ikawai camera was really no help on Tuesday at midday but at best again the Waitaki looked discoloured so expect the likes of Bells Pond and Bortons to be the same and high as they were two weeks back.
Those fishing for Trout locally have had heaps of fun with sea runs aplenty especially in our local rivers but further up the highway at the Opihi and Orari as it has carried a lot of volume lately and the mouth should still be well established there. The Waihau Box is however closed now but a trickle passes under the main box structure, be careful on the shingle around those edges.
Lakes are again producing as more get out and about.
I received some mention from a Waihi angler who was through our district a couple of weeks ago and he had a great stay over at Lake Wardell after catching a ripper trout in Ohau A canal.
See his post on Waitaki Angling and Outdoors page with his fantastic catch!
Thanks for the accolades Gus!
Now, Lake Wardell is just a few clicks past the bridge on SH8 crossing the Pukaki Canal, near the Mt Cook turn off. There is a large pond area and plenty of shelter there and apparently some good Trout to be caught too, no Salmon in there sorry! Fly Spin Bait fishing methods are OK there and it is a high country season for there so open now until April 30th. Boat fishing is not excluded although always check local regulations before dipping the trailer.
Lures ideally, should be Black Gold patterns like Toby, Dandy etc and soft plastics on 1/8 to 1/4oz jigheads retrieved close to the bottom. Berkley Gulp Minnow twitched on retrieve should be deadly in there or a paddle tail to keep the bait lively.
Fly fishers should use those typical high country brown beetle patterns, Cochy Bondhu, Alder, Irresistible Adams too. There isn’t as much pressure on this spot so fish should be worth catching and if releasing, keep them right at the waters edge.
Canals are going OK with some fantastic Trout and Salmon being caught recently.
Those new Chinook colours will be ideal now as the fish have not seen them before unlike many other lure patterns.
Ohau C still has a lot of smaller fish annoying anglers but there are some good Browns in there also preying on smaller Salmon especially. Soft plastics in up to 4” in those silvery patterns should get the desired result.
The flow into Ohau A has been up there lately and hard to keep lures deep enough without marching it downstream a distance so fish heavier but as soon as the bottom is felt, lift the rod tip to avoid costly snags.
All the usual rules apply for the rest of the area, fish the bottom, change of light, evenings etc, go shopping when hot and for when it’s sunny take insect repellent and sunscreen.
For hunters, there are plenty of Wallabies about and I would now suggest the doc blocks as most are shaded from seasonal bright sunlight.
Rabbits are still posing a problem for landowners as are pigeons and starlings. We have birdshot in stock and can guide you to the best option for your situation.
If you have issues with these three nuisances, call in and let us organise a visit to reduce the problem for you.
