For my second blog, let's share something about my favourite kiwi whisky makers. Founded in 2017 in the small town of Pokeno just south of Auckland, the Pokeno Whisky distillery has quickly risen to become one of the most acclaimed whisky producers in the Southern Hemisphere. The brainchild of master distiller Matt Johns, the distillery is renowned for its innovative techniques and commitment to using only the finest locally-sourced ingredients. I loved their whiskies when I sighted their beautiful bottles, then when I tasted the liquids themselves I was blown away. If you cast your eye back through our socials you may find a video live from my tastings of these gorgeous drinks.

The flagship Origin Single Malt is a beautifully balanced dram, with notes of honey, vanilla, and a subtle smoky undertone. The Discovery Cask Strength expression (my favourite) is a robust and full-bodied whisky, bursting with flavors of dark fruits, toffee, and a hint of spice. Meanwhile, the limited-edition Revelation Sherry Cask Finish is a true masterpiece, offering a complex interplay of rich sherry notes, dark chocolate, and a lingering oakiness (and it’s stunning too).

Through its unwavering dedication to quality and experimentation, Pokeno Whisky has earned numerous accolades, including multiple double gold medals at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The distillery's whiskies are highly sought after by connoisseurs worldwide, solidifying its reputation as a true gem in the world of craft spirits.

In the Liquorland stores we try to carry these three core whiskies every day. On June 16 2024 the RRP of each is Origin at $99.99 with Discovery and Revelation both being $119.99. In the first in a series of blogs from us at Liquorland on the Coast, we're talking red wine for the Winter season.

As winter's chill sets in, I’d say there's no better way to shake off the cold than with a hearty, full-bodied red wine. Here in New Zealand we may be better known for our zesty Sauvignon Blancs, but we also produce many surprisingly bold reds that are perfect winter warmers.

Leading the way are the creamy, richly-textured Bordeaux-style blends from Hawke's Bay. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, these ripe, luxurious reds offer intense black fruit flavors laced with notes of spice, cocoa and dried herbs. Their velvety tannins and opulent mouthfeel stand up beautifully to winter's decadent fare like slow-cooked meats and aged cheeses. A perfect example is Church Road’s amazingly good value Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon $19.99. I love this beautiful bold red and would pair it with any hard cheeses or hearty dinner.

The Pinot Noirs of Central Otago are of course another stellar winter pour. These concentrated, fruit-forward reds burst with flavors of ripe plum, black cherry, and enticing baking spice notes. With their silky texture, bright acidity and fine-grained tannins, they make an ideal match for heartier mushroom or game dishes on cold winter nights. My personal favourite is the Rockburn $46.99. Big and silky on the palate it's full of the classic flavours and will pair ever so perfectly with almost any meal. My personally favourite match, with apologies to vegetarians, is Rockburn with Duck done any way you care to do it!

For a splurge-worthy winter treat, I’d mostly stray across the Tasman for a Shiraz. Inky-hued and brimming with rich black fruit flavors, smoky bacon notes, and cracked pepper spice these are reds that will warm you through and through. Splendid choices for sipping beside a roaring winter fire. There are so many to choose from, with two personal favourites being 19 Crimes $20.99 and Taylor’s Estate $18.99, the latter being named best under $20 Shiraz by no less than Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, in a recent interview with Jack Tame on his popular Saturday morning Newstalk ZB show guest slot. Last but not least is the best selling red wine in our store, the Grant Burge Barossa Ink Shiraz $21.99...ever so delightful!

Then to round Winter off, a spectacular find I made late last year was Graham Norton’s He-Devil Malbec $18.99. Graham makes all his wines with the amazing team at Invivo Wines and they come up with refreshing takes on so many varietals. This one is no exception. Big, fruit heavy on the palette, this jumps out as a very dark (Graham might say mysteriously sexy) wine with plum and spice notes that will just make your day. Malbec is best paired with lean meats that are not overly rich, such as skirt steak, lamb, venison, or poultry. It’s also, just quietly, spectacular with blue cheese. Burger with Blue Cheese and Graham anyone?

Make winter more tolerable with one of these delightfully robust reds straight from the Southern Hemisphere's vineyards.

Tastings are a feature of the Coast Liquorland experience. Today, Saturday, May 11, from just after 2pm John will share the Cab Sav, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at Manly. At Stanmore Bay Sion will share the lineup celebrating the World of Whisky initiative. The wines will be tasting at Manly through till the end of Sunday or when the tasters are exhausted, and the whiskies at Stanmore Bay just between 4 and 6pm today. You can do both on this lovely Autumn day!
