What a night!!! Thank you so much to Blair Walter from for hosting this in depth tasting event. We looked back through multiple varieties and vintages of Felton Road, including their first ever vintage Bannockburn Pinot Noir from 1997!

- The Block 1 Rieslings were seemingly timeless with the perfect balance of residual sugar and brilliant acidity flecked with hints of honey and kerosene.
- The Bannockburn Chardonnays were full of citrus and just a touch of creaminess, showcasing the impact of limiting new oak.
- The Bannockburn Pinot Noir showed us that Central Otago undoubtedly has aging potential and revealed the more savoury style that was prevalent here in the early years.
- The Calvert Pinot Noirs were showing good development but still had their classic red fruit crunch and firm tannins demonstrating how to blend seriousness and elegance seamlessly.
- And lastly the Block 3 Pinot Noirs. These were special, just as Blair knew they were from the very start. He championed releasing this block separately from the Bannockburn Pinot from the get go and the legacy we all love was born.

A line up we won’t soon be forgetting!

Leigh from langmeilwinery in the Barossa Valley took this group through 10 wines that included Riesling, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course, plenty of Shiraz! Here it is! An Australian icon, 1989 Penfolds Grange, 35 years old, dense in the glass but silky smooth and complex on the palate as you’d expect. Be quick as we only have a few bottles for tasting - $39 a taste, or get a bottle for $1,599!!

One of the highlights of late 2021 was to have the father and son team, Paul and Rory Dunleavy, from Te Motu Vineyard on Waiheke Island visit with a selection of some of their finest aged reds and new releases. Te Motu produce some of the finest Bordeaux-blends that New Zealand has to offer.

From their Dunleavy range we were impressed by tasting of The Strip, The Shed and The Grafter, all of which we stock. Of course the highlights was tasting their Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends; Te Motu 2010, and the Te Motu 2015, as well as the new release Kororo, which is Merlot-dominant.

It’s great to see Te Motu giving these well-structured and densely concentrated reds the time to age in bottle before release, it always makes a huge difference as the wines integrate and reveal their complexity. We were assured by Paul and Rory that the wines would easily age for another 20 years easily, and we all agreed. These are special wines for the cellar.

Late last year the wonderful Gordon Russell, the veteran NZ winemaker for Esk Valley in the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay, graced us with his presence at The Winery - Arrowtown.

Gordon is always generous in sharing his knowledge and how he strives to make the best possible wine he can from Esk Valley’s vineyards. Evidently this is something he does very well, as demonstrated by the quality of the wines he bought with him to share with us.

We tasted a wide selection of reds and whites, and quickly realised that the new Esk Valley Artisanal range (Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Albarino, Malbec/Merlot/CabSauv blend) quite possibly represent some of the best value for money wines we have in stock. The complexity, balance and overall quality of the wines you can get for the price is stunning. The Chenin Blanc is already Sold Out!

We just love new and exciting wines, especially when they are of this quality, boutique and hard to come by. This is the first release of ‘The Marlborist’ chardonnay.

As you might expect, The Marlborist’s are regional specialists and the calibre of people crafting these wines is exceptional, with winemaker Rich Ellis (ex-Greywacke Vineyards & Ata Rangi) hand on in the winery and viticulturist Stu Dudley (ex-Villa Maria Estate) sourcing the best grapes. Their ambition is to share their love of this place and celebrate the very best of Marlborough, the people, the Sounds, the hunting….and of course the wines.

Due to limited quantities most of the wines sold out within weeks. The Chardonnay is on tasting now at The Winery - Queenstown so get in as soon as you can. This is clearly a wine that is going to reward those with the patience to cellar it. The oak and fruit integrate beautifully with time in the glass as you taste it.

Taking time away from his undoubtedly busy schedule, we were lucky enough to have the NZ sparkling wine guru, Bendigo wine pioneer, and winemaker/owner of Quartz Reef Wines, Rudi Bauer, in our Arrowtown store to give us a full tasting of his sparklings, whites and reds.

With Rudi’s wealth of knowledge and years of experience making wine in the Central Otago region, we took the opportunity to learn from one of the best, and discover his Sparklings, Pinots, and Chardonnays taste so good.

All the wines were delicious of course, but one of the stand-out wines was the 2015 Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Brut, it had such an amazing concentration of citrus and buttery cream flavour, with the texture being perfectly balanced between a soft mousse and refreshing acidity. Ideal for those special celebrations.

It was a thrill to host a tasting with Waiheke Island wine legend Steve White, his Stonyridge Vineyard team of winemaker Martin Pickering and wine ambassador Dan White, and their local VIP Larose Club members in early August. Guests were surrounded by New Zealand’s wine royalty, with a ‘who’s who’ of the Central Otago wine industry in attendance including with Grant Taylor (Valli) and Alan Brady (founder of Gibbston Valley and Mt Edward).

The pinnacle of the night was tasting the Stonyridge greats; including two vintages of ‘Larose’, the 2019 and soon to be released 2020, both of which will age incredibly well, along with the rustic ‘Pilgrim’ Syrah, the juicy, fruity ‘Luna Negra’ Malbec, as well as the exclusive Luna Dorada Chardonnay. Many stand-out wines!

Big thanks to Steve and the Stonyridge team for coming, it was a very memorable evening and we look forward to many more.
