Meghan Woods the Labour MP for Wigram visited the Dairy on Friday, (Photo courtesy of Chris Lynch Media). I thought long and hard about putting up a post and initially decided not to, but after what I see as a debacle and silly antics over the last few days regarding several political leaders that hold seats, I decided to forge ahead with it.
During her quick visit, I discussed a number of topics, obviously regarding youth crime. It is my belief that activists(ism) in politics is one of the likely contributors to this and we never talk about it. Examples I see would be Debbie Ngarewa Packer on TikToc, the recent comments by Marama Davidson to the media, or Rawiri Waititi using long-outdated language when referring to descendants of early settlers, to the rhetoric you find coming from the extreme right with groups such as The western Guard or the Dominion Movement, both centred on white supremacy, who mainly have an online presence in places on the web where it is attractive for youth to go. Combine this with other pressure we have placed on youth regarding climate change, the tribulations we all went through with Covid and lockdowns, it is little wonder they are acting out.
With examples like these, adults have created, with little regard for their well-being, a confused adolescent, which I might add some other politicians want to give the right to vote to, they even campaign with them for that right. All this meddling creates confusion which manifests as anger because they don't fully understand the emotions they are feeling, the end result is what we are witnessing now.
I also slipped in The Bradford Generation theory, the Government of the day, 16 odd years ago took away a sometimes useful tool from parents but failed to provide a replacement tool or method of discipline. Now parents are afraid to discipline because of the stigma & repercussions, and parental discipline has eroded. As we all know the anti-smacking bill as a remedy for abuse and violence against children was never achieved.
It is little wonder today's youth are acting out their emotions, as I said it is my belief there is no room for activism in politics as it is a contributing factor.
We briefly discussed wrap-around services for youth offenders but it is my belief any rehabilitative action must start with parents, this is where the main effort should be. They need to be the most influential figure in our youths' lives along with a teacher, any more adult intervention and again we confuse them.
I also informed her of dairy owners we know of who are taking turns doing "Sentry" in their shops during the hours their business is closed. others throughout the country are sleeping on the premise in case of raids. All while trying to hold their own families together.
If a Member of Parliament wants to help, the one thing they need to do is listen to their constituents not debate them as if they are in the house debating the opposition. I do not care what the Prime Minister has done to Stuart Nash whilst I am fixing my shop door after a criminal has kicked it in. To me, their time is better served assisting the community in bringing crime under control through sound and effective policy which both supports and holds parents and children to account. As for offering victims help, several agencies are working hard to achieve this already, and politicians do those agencies a disservice trying to hold them to account to impress me!
Your comments are appreciated but I would not want to see this post turn into a political debate please, it should remain what I intended it to be, what is good for or best for our youth.
