One of Hawkes Bayâs true originals, Brookfieldsâ Peter Robertson has long been a disciple of the Red Arts with an uncompromising vision. His storied career stretches back to the 1970s and his time working with legendary winemaking pioneer Tom McDonald.
The recent devastation felt throughout the Bay courtesy of Cyclone Gabriel had a huge impact on Brookfields, and it has taken Peter time and resilience to climb back out of the resulting chaos. But he has done so, restoring order to his vineyards and winery, only to run into yet another hurdle with the unexpected cancellation of a large shipment to China, where a previously reliable customer has disappeared without trace.
Having a long and deep regard for Peter, we were determined to extend a hand and help him deal with this twist in fortunes. While he has been caught out by this unexpected turn of events, we - and ultimately you - are the beneficiaries. This is an Olympic-level aged red and an unbelievable score for anyone who is into top-tier Hawkes Bay Cabernet blends. In the aftermath of WWI, 20-year-old Josef Jakicevich hopped off a boat from the battle-scarred Balkans with no more than a handful of change and a headful of dreams. From a single store on Jervois Road, the tenacious, hard-working Josef went on to forge the family-run business that is Glengarry Wines. Four generations on, Josef would be in a state of total disbelief that children in a stolen car could have just driven through the front doors of that hard-won business on Jervois Road, causing, yet again, tens of thousands of dollars-worth of damage for a few hundred dollars-worth of alcoholic booty. Glengarry is now at 42 ram raids (around its 14 Auckland stores) and counting, with an overall cost up around $250,000. Add to that the ongoing trauma to staff and family and you can see we might be well over it all. With the cost of each ram raid spiralling into the tens of thousands and insurance premiums mounting, not to mention the loss of income while everything is put back together, we have had to seek out advice, install bollards, barrels full of sand, security grills, film on the windows, upgraded cameras, alarm systems - you name it, weâve done it, in an attempt to stem this horrendous tide. While this out-of-control social situation is no easy fix, we do pay our taxes, and yet because we have more than one store, we are ineligible for any government assistance. Conclusion? This is an unsustainable situation that is devastating so many businesses. New Zealand cannot endure it. Something has to change. Words wonât fix it.

Unfortunately, as reported in the nzherald.co.nz today, our Jervois Road store was broken into, and access gained to the cellar housing our fine wines. Given the selective nature of the theft, this was very much a targeted operation, with the offenders on the phone at the time and stealing to a specific list.
