There’s life in them thar hills.

Welcome to San Sebastián.

Today’s winery visit was to Carlos Serres and Vivanco, major players in the Rioja region with 500+ ha of vineyards and many different brands. My 3rd visit and it keeps impressing! The sheer number of barrels is gobsmacking. Interestingly, more and more French oak barrels are being used as opposed to the hundred percent American oak from previous times. Sparkling wine is now being made in Rioja and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are allowed to be planted too. The scale is impressive. Rioja has about 67000 ha of vines. Single vineyard wines are being produced and marketed. Things are a’changin. And then, lunch reserved for Planet Wine.
