News Report: President of AAUMSA Addresses School Fee Increment Controversy

In a recent development, Precious Odiyi, the President of the Ambrose Alli University Medical Students Association (AAUMSA), has been at the center of allegations regarding school fee increments affecting all departments within the College of Medicine at Ambrose Alli University. Odiyi, in response to these allegations, has chosen to break his silence and clarify the situation.

According to Odiyi, the controversy surrounding the fee increment pertains solely to the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, and he emphasizes that he and other stakeholders from this faculty were summoned to the Edo State Government House in Benin on July 27th to discuss this specific issue. He also notes that the fee increase primarily affected returning students within the Faculty of Clinical Sciences due to several factors, including a lack of new students entering the department.

Furthermore, Odiyi highlights some crucial points for clarification:

1. The executives of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences have made numerous trips to the Edo State Government House and Secretariat in their efforts to resolve the school fee increment issue, more than any other faculty president, faculty association, or student body.

2. Odiyi criticizes the dissolved Student Union Government (SUG) for not proactively engaging in negotiations to prevent the fee increment when it initially began with the Faculty of Clinical Sciences. He mentions that the SUG attended only one of several meetings with university management and relevant authorities, arriving late and remaining largely quiet during discussions. Consequently, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences had to negotiate the fee increase independently, resulting in a new fee of 220,000NGN.

3. Odiyi points out that the SUG became actively involved in addressing the fee increment only after it had expanded to affect all 66 departments within Ambrose Alli University. He acknowledges that he has

* JAMB Suspends AAU Student Regularization Due to University Debt Dispute*

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the suspension of student regularization for Ambrose Alli University (AAU) following a dispute over outstanding debts. According to sources within the JAMB office, a student recently raised concerns about paying a fee of 7000 NGN to the university for regularization. This incident has drawn attention to the alleged financial woes between AAU and JAMB.

Traditionally, the process of student regularization involves universities sending student names to JAMB for verification and uploading into the database. Subsequently, JAMB calculates the total payable amount and communicates it to the respective university for payment. However, in this case, it appears that the university has allegedly defaulted on its financial obligations to JAMB, prompting the board to halt the uploading of AAU's student regularization records.

The dispute has caused frustration among affected students who are now caught in the middle of this financial tussle. The suspension of student regularization by JAMB adds to the growing concerns surrounding the university's financial stability and its ability to provide quality education services.

While AAU has not yet officially responded to these claims, the situation highlights the importance of transparent financial dealings between educational institutions and regulatory bodies like JAMB. The fate of students seeking regularization remains uncertain until the university addresses the alleged debts and resolves the issue with JAMB.

This development sheds light on the larger challenges within the Nigerian educational system, emphasizing the need for improved communication and financial accountability between universities and regulatory bodies to ensure a smooth educational experience for all students.

ASUU AAU Responds To The Press Release On The Salary Situation In Ambrose Alli University. Ekpoma By The University Management.

IT is no longer news that the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma for a long period of time has been in the news as a result of default in the payment of salaries of workers, staff unions’ check-off dues and other deductions from the emoluments of workers. The salary crisis is a symptom of the dysfunction of management or administration of a university, particularly in the twenty-first century.

ASUU-AAU drags Obaseki, others to court over suspension of unions activities in state-owned universities

This issue has ignited local strike actions by staff unions in the University with particular reference to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from 25th March, 2021 – 31st May, 2021 and on 14th February, 2022.

The immediate-past Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Benson Osadolor attempted to apprehend the problem by adopting a civilized principle of industrial relations, namely, dialogue with the various staff unions in the University in order to broker peace and restore industrial harmony in the University. Prof. Benson Osadolor’s approach led to a Memorandum of Action (MoA) the University reached with ASUU, Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma Chapter on 31st May, 2021 over the problem – payment of outstanding salaries of staff. A proviso in the MoA permitted ASUU to embark on strike in the event of the University failing to pay arrears of salaries of members of the Union.

In handling the salary crisis, Prof. Benson Osadolor was fair, sincere, humane and showed undisguised willingness and readiness to put an end to the salary crisis in the University. He was an Acting Vice Chancellor of due process, having shown unconditional respect for the Law and Regulations of the University. The reality in the University at that time supports the fact that if Prof. Benson Osadolor was allowed to stay
