We have mentioned before that back in Song Dynasty, Jian Zhan were used for Tea Duelling 斗茶.
What is Tea Duelling?
Firstly, the preferred choice of Jian Zhan are what we called Dian Cha Qi 点茶器.
These are bigger than normal Jian Zhan and normally the diameter are at least 12.5cm.
The "fighters" will use very fine powdered tea powder and "beat" it into a foam.
Whoever has the finer foam which can last longer wins.
The video shows an example of Tea Duelling which shows the tea powder being beat into foam.

Fire Marker 火标.
Ancient wisdom, this is what they use to check the temperature and if the Jian Zhans are fired well in the kiln during the firing process.
These are placed inside the kiln during firing without any protection in the "firing tray" so that the craftsmen can observe the fire marker during firing.
They are taken out once firing is completed and very often due to the drastic change in temperature, from 1300 degrees Celsius to normal temperature, many of them just crack and split into halves.
