We are transforming...
This is an open letter to all my customers and other stakeholders. Candidly, by the time you read this letter, my physical shop at Plaza Damas has been shut, permanently. Instead of focusing on the reasons why I made the bold and sudden decision, I would like to focus on what she has achieved and where she will be.
Taking stock of where Kinone has achieved since the inception of the store in Dec 2020, here are some of the little learning points and small achievements towards making positive impact:
• We have donated close to 200kg worth of fresh produce to The Lost Food Project, Happy Bank and other individual volunteers whom connected us with some charity organisations.
• We are doing our best to inspire more urban farming activities, from microgreens to community farming.
• We continuously support underprivileged communities such as single mothers, orang asli, refugees through our supply chain and other processes. One of the most successful programme was the Adopting Banana Tree planted by Orang Asli where customers can adopt a banana tree through the facilitation of Pertubuhan Komuniti Kasih Selangor.
• We are doing our part in sharing information about the food sources, its value and if any empowering consumers to embark in ethical buying.
• We have created a place for customers to repurpose the glass jars, carton boxes, egg trays, etc. These glass jars in return were washed, disinfected and gifted to other customers for their own use.
• We contributed close to 50kg of unsalvageable fresh produce to composting bins in Kebun Komuniti Hartamas (KKH) specifically and on top of that, we connected customers to the community farm.
• Free education programme for younglings in generating their interest in gardening or farming through Grow Your Own Microgreens.
• We inspired more young entrepreneurs to create product serving as an alternative to the existing commercial products driven by consumerism. For example, ever since we started to collect carton boxes from customers, we noticed there’s high consumption of nut milk leading to high volume of carton boxes to be discarded. We worked with Simply Real founder, Wilson Ang, this talented and creative young entrepreneur developed the nut milk such as almond milk in reusable glass bottle. Some of these learning should be adopted across to counter consumerism that entices us into impulsive buying that comes with the horrendous aftermath of packaging pollution.
• We do our best to influence our neighbour shop to adopt zero waste way of running business.
MAKING POSITIVE IMPACT
As a sole owner of this store, I urge everyone to continuously make positive impact on the people around you. Charity starts from home, by definition of home means family and friends, neighbourhood and community as your home, school as your home, residing country as your home, etc. I am committed to undertake more interesting projects to drive and materialise my two original visions on environmental and socio economic.
GRATITUDE
I couldn’t thank all my customers, suppliers, competitors, communities, peers, enough in making this a soulful and interesting journey. We are bringing the store to virtual and expanding our horizon to cover especially my hometown market in Penang and in Klang Valley of course.
Yours truthfully,
Kah Leong
