From the lake to the hills - Oneonthehill Imports

Cascina San Michele is a gorgeous property in Costigliole d’Asti, at 30 minutes from Alba, in the middle of the wild Monferrato area. We are in Barbera land, these are warm, white soils that produce some of the finest and most age-worthy Barbera you will ever taste. To stress it’s historical importance, Costigliole is also home of the Consorzio della Barbera d’Asti, the beating heart behind the Unesco World Heritage site in Monferrato.

Marco Minnucci is a young producer who left Lago Maggiore to become Roberto Voerzio’s apprentice, one of the famous Barolo Boys. His style could not be further away from Roberto’s and that already tells a lot about Marco’s character: he moved from La Morra to Costigliole to create something truly unique and authentic.

Marco’s vineyards are strictly farmed without any herbicides, fertilisers or any other “chemical intervention that might alter the natural cycle of the plant”. Wines are fermented with only spontaneous yeasts and are not filtered. Natural, in the best way possible.

When we decided to start our import project in California we selected a few talented friends making wine. Alberto Oggero was the first one on the list.

I’ve been a personal fan of their Roero vineyards, their approach to winemaking and life for a while and…the rest of the write up you can read it on our brand new USA site.

350 years of winemaking history must taste pretty good.

Bramaterra is a DOCG Nebbiolo based appellation in Northern Italy, in an area we call Alto Piemonte. Here, Nebbiolo meets volcanic soils and alpine breezes, creating wines that we can’t get enough of.
Great energy and lift coming from a climate that is typically cooler than Langhe, and a unique tone that only volcanic soils can achieve.

Is the cork holding? How much wine is still in the bottle? What was the vintage like and how was the wine made?

Here’s a quick recap on who we are 👇🏻

Born and raised in Piemonte 🇮🇹🍷

Musicians: Pier had a punk rock teenage band called and is now making music with ; Chiara is a classically trained opera singer. She also played for several bands in the past

Performing arts: Chiara acts with , Pier did his share of theatre in the past
Eclectic: we love art, music, literature, philosophy and probably too many things

Joined the Italian Sommelier Association and worked for restaurants in Italy for a while. Did not like it. Good training though.

Left for California, worked there for 2 years between Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Loved it!

Returned to Piemonte to create Oneonthehill: our own wine community, revolving around artisanal wines and people who share our lifestlye.

Assessing the quality of a vintage is not an easy task: weather conditions, winemakers choices, terroir. Vintage charts provide a good baseline, but the times we had our idea of a growing year challenged are too many to count.

Our best advice is: read about vintage reports, compare them, beware from the ones who are too quick with judgment and ultimately always taste for yourself.

Wines like these are like a great book, and nobody likes spoilers.
This trio went to a Club Member in Chicago last week with only three descriptors:

1997 Ripe
1999 Vibrant
2001 Earthy
