Here’s a quick recap on who we are 👇🏻

Born and raised in Piemonte 🇮🇹🍷

Musicians: Pier had a punk rock teenage band called and is now making music with ; Chiara is a classically trained opera singer. She also played for several bands in the past

Performing arts: Chiara acts with , Pier did his share of theatre in the past
Eclectic: we love art, music, literature, philosophy and probably too many things

Joined the Italian Sommelier Association and worked for restaurants in Italy for a while. Did not like it. Good training though.

Left for California, worked there for 2 years between Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Loved it!

Returned to Piemonte to create Oneonthehill: our own wine community, revolving around artisanal wines and people who share our lifestlye.

Assessing the quality of a vintage is not an easy task: weather conditions, winemakers choices, terroir. Vintage charts provide a good baseline, but the times we had our idea of a growing year challenged are too many to count.

Our best advice is: read about vintage reports, compare them, beware from the ones who are too quick with judgment and ultimately always taste for yourself.

Wines like these are like a great book, and nobody likes spoilers.
This trio went to a Club Member in Chicago last week with only three descriptors:

1999 Vibrant
2001 Earthy

Iterations with Riccardo: “let us look small”

Last fall we hopped in our car with old music friend and his vintage set of cameras.

More of a fun artistic project than anything else, I love how spontaneous and unique these photos look. No references at all, just go out there and do something kind of a vibe.

Raise your hand if you've never had Croatina 🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♂️

Casa Tallone is one of the super cool new projects we recently added to our Club selection. Two brothers, Davide and Matteo, between Asti and the Roero region. Their adventure started with 4 rows in front of their house: every year, from these grapes, they produced Ca' d' Talün, better known as: "Wine not for sale, I drink it all with friends".

Arneis, Nebbiolo and Croatina are the grapes of choice, with the latter being one of the freshest wine news in the area and a big summer favorite.

The total production is enough for Davide and Matteo’s friends plus a few others. I’ll let you guess which Club you need to join in order to get some.

Making wine outside the box

I met Giuseppe and Kyriaki in 2018, we had just moved back from Sonoma County and Oneonthehill had only been born for a few months. We shared the excitement for a new adventure, the struggle to fit a very traditional area and the passion towards our dream.

Fast forward 5 years and Valdisole is now one of the most unique projects in Piemonte, with their wines are all over the world and social media. Rare and forgotten varietals, old and abandoned vineyards bursting with new life, wines made outside the DOCG box.

Elektra is a 7 months skin contact Malvasia Moscata: aromatic, ripe, charming.

We often stress how much research we put in our selection and this is a great example: our Club Members received Valdisole wines 4 years ago. Join the Club and get a taste of the best Piemonte wines before everyone else!

Some noses are better than others, and a good nose will get you far. It’s the story of Beppe Caviola, who went from making wine in his parents’ garage to becoming one of the most renowned enologist in the country.

Besides consulting for several wineries all over Italy, Beppe makes his Ca’ Viola wines at Villa Bracco, their beautiful estate in the Dogliani area. Native yeast, unfiltered, terroir-driven and truly authentic.

DOGLIANI WHO?

Dolcetto is a native grape from Piemonte, making one the most authentic, traditional, DRY (as non-sweet) red wine. Sometimes rustic, unpretentious, it’s a wine for the table or the vineyard if you’re a farmer.
Very gastronomic, dolcetto wines are perfectly designed for food, especially when it’s Piemontese.

Dogliani is a town just a few minutes south of Barolo where Dolcetto has been thriving for centuries. We’re adding some to our Club selection so sign up today if you’d like to try some!

How to get fresh pasta from strangers: Piemonte’s Nonnas, a UNESCO World Heritage.

I went for a run the other morning, crossing a portion of the city of Alba around the church of La Moretta. Palmina, a lady in her 80s with an apron, was walking to her friend Maria across the street. Palmina was carrying a pot in her hands and as I ran past them she handed the pot to Maria.
I ran for another 10 seconds and then decided to walk back, the curiosity was killing me.
“I am sorry ladies, may I ask what you prepared for her? I am too curious!” I had never met the ladies, but yes, I can be that bold sometimes.

Palmina had made tajarin pasta from scratch and she was bringing some to Maria, who’s not doing great lately she said, along with some homemade ragù. A Langa classic.

I was sweaty from the run but we started chatting. Palmina invited me into her kitchen and sent me home with a portion of Tajarin and ragù for me and Chiara.

Curiosity is a window into great experiences and memories, sometimes it leads to extreme kindness from a past we should all treasure and be grateful for.

In 1986 Giorgio Ferrero, a farmer in Pino d’Asti, received his first organic certification, a time in which sustainability and respect for the land were far far away from today’s standards.

Luca, Giorgio’s grandson, is now continuing the family’s adventure , tending personally and by hand to his 4 hectares of land: cover crop, no chemicals, almost no technology, whole cluster and Freisa, the grape he loves the most.

His wines are pure, remarkably clean (enology-school kids, go taste them) and pack a ton of personality. This is a 2020 Petnat, Freisa, Barbera and Malvasia di Schierano, 2 years on the lees.
