I have just returned from a moving and emotional trip to Hungary, from where my mother’s family hails. To think there were once 2000 synagogues, each a testament to the vibrant and diverse communities that built them. Beautiful and impressive synagogues that stood so proudly in the city centres, clearly with the belief that their communities would last for eternity. There were leaders in all fields of sciences, business and the arts who were Jews. Tragically and falsely, they believed they were safe. But almost three quarters of the Jews were murdered. Today we can tour the beautiful synagogues - but without the people.

What constantly amazed me was the contrast between the extraordinary beauty and the harrowing brutality. The synagogues, with their exquisite beauty, inspired me. I see it as a mission to incorporate this art into my work and products.

There is a revival of Hungarian Jewish communities, particularly in Budapest. Jews are slowly admitting to their roots, and institutions are growing. Perhaps the story of Hannukah is being retold at a different time and place.
