One of Tuscany's most esteemed wineries, Tenuta Il Poggione, is renowned for crafting powerful wines that appeal to both collectors and everyday enthusiasts. Nestled in Sant'Angelo in Colle within the Montalcino commune, Tenuta Il Poggione was founded in the late 19th century by Lavinio Franceschi. Today, the winery remains in the capable hands of the fifth generation, siblings Leopoldo and Livia Franceschi.
As one of the original three producers of Brunello di Montalcino, Il Poggione has been instrumental in setting the standards of excellence for this prestigious region. The estate spans 1,500 acres, with 350 acres dedicated to vineyards, 175 acres to olive groves, and the remainder to arable land and woodland. This diverse landscape supports biodiversity and sustainable farming practices, with cattle and pigs grazing the land. Many of the vines thrive at elevations exceeding 1,315 feet, including those in the historic Vigna Paganelli vineyard, planted in 1964.
Harvesting at Tenuta Il Poggione is done entirely by hand, maintaining traditional winemaking methods while integrating state-of-the-art technology. The winery ensures complete control over the vinification process, thanks to a modern cellar built in 2004. Tradition is honored with the use of large Allier French oak barrels, stored five meters underground for aging. Committed to sustainable viticulture, the winery uses 100% estate-grown, hand-selected fruit.
The 2018 vintage showcases a brilliant ruby red colour, with an intense and persistent nose featuring red fruit notes. Its warm, balanced flavour, velvet-smooth tannins, and long-lasting aroma make it one of the most accessible vintages in recent years. This wine is ready to enjoy today but also has the potential to age gracefully for over a decade.
