Wine Spotlight of the Week: Villa Noria Amfòra Natural Orange Wine 2022

This natural orange wine is crafted without sulphites or yeast. Made from white wine grapes using red wine techniques, the skins and seeds are macerated for three months, resulting in a coppery hue and a tannic, structured body.

Sourced from Villa Noria’s certified organic vineyards, this blend of Muscat, Clairette, and Piquepoul is matured in terracotta amphora. The amphora’s porous nature allows oxygenation, softening the acidity and rounding the tannins.

The wine’s rich copper-amber color sets the stage for an intriguing bouquet of gingerbread, candied orange, beeswax, and honey. On the palate, expect bold flavors of ginger spice, baked apple, and nuts. Its soft texture carries a gentle tannic bitterness, finishing with notes of rhubarb and ginger jam.

Wine Spotlight of the Week: Rozy Bikini Rosé 2022

This is Rozy, a sassy rosé from the Côtes Catalanes in the south of France, who sports a new bikini every vintage.

A blend of Syrah (75%) and Muscat Petit Grains, Rozy hits the sweet spot of French rosé, dry Provence-style with a fruity finish. Beautiful light peach in colour, with a fragrant nose of summer berries, citrus and floral notes, the palate is crisp, fresh and silky, great with food or just as a summer sipper on the beach or terrace.

Côtes Catalanes is the southern-most IGP on the French Mediterranean coast, the area around Perpignan that runs to the Spanish border.

Wine Spotlight of the Week: The Better Half Sauvignon Blanc 2022

Born from a playful rivalry with his winemaker wife Jules Taylor, George Elworthy revived his winemaking passion and created ‘The Better Half’—a fittingly cheeky name for his new venture.

Our top-selling wine since 2016, this sleek and vibrant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a true delight. Bursting with punchy aromas of passion fruit, lime leaf, and lemongrass, it’s accented by delicate notes of white rose petal. Dry yet luscious, the wine offers a perfect balance of rich, exotic mango and guava flavors, with zesty citrus acidity and a hint of salinity on the finish.

Our April Wine of the Month comes from the old vineyards of Mont Rocher, which are perched high in the dramatic hills and terraces above the Vallée d’Agly, in the eastern Pyrenees, with a unique character of their own. Famed black schist is interspersed with pockets of limestone from the higher slopes, combining richness and power with a fresher, more finely defined character.

Deeply ruby coloured with a purple tinge, there are abundant plum, blackberries and cherries on the nose with a hint of pepper and violet. The palate is equally appealing, bursting with refreshing red fruit, notes of cassis and leather and with a pleasingly silky mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced tannins and medium levels of acidity round out the soft black and plum fruits leading to a smooth and succulent finish.

April's Case of the Month is all French, except for a couple of Malbec marvels from Mendoza (Argentina).

The standouts among the reds are the Grenache/Shiraz Domaine Fond Croze Confidence Côtes du Rhône 2022 and the Mendoza-made Mosquita Mu**ta 'Cordero con Piel de Lobo' Malbec 2022. Other Malbecs in the case are Santuario's 2022 Malbec and the Mont Rocher Vieilles Vignes Malbec 2021. The reds are rounded off by two super drinkable delights from France: the five-grape Elements Terra Côtes du Rhône Rouge 2021 and the one-grape Château Laulerie Merlot 2022.

The whites are all French and the star is undoubtedly the Château de Chemilly Coteaux Bourguignons Chardonnay 2022—new to Curious Wines. The rest of the whites are a selection of French varietals done the way only the French can, including Touraine Le Cerf Sauvignon Blanc 2022 from Loire and Mont Rocher Vieilles Vignes Viognier 2022 from Languedoc-Roussillon. The sole blend in the mix is the five-grape Elements Terra Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2023.

We mentioned early last year that we had bought a tiny stake in a vineyard run by Château de Scouse, just outside the small village of Foie Mare in Languedoc. And the first cases of our very own wine have just arrived in the warehouse. Excited? Us? You have no idea.

Because it’s our first go, we’re playing it safe and we’ve gone with a blend of two of the most popular grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. We also saw there was a bit of a gap in the market for that in Ireland.

The flavour and aroma profiles are what you’d imagine.

Bottles are flying out the door, so we can’t guarantee it’ll be in stock on the site or in store.

Some new premium, organic Côtes du Rhône to tell you about now, with the arrival of Domaine Fond Croze, a third generation family winery that began with a returning soldier from the First World War.

Charles Long started out with a small land holding, growing vines and fruit trees to feed and support his family. With the help of his son and subsequently grandsons, this small fruit farm became 80 hectares of organically certified vineyards, encompassing a multitude of terroir and multiple village appellations in the southern Rhône.

As an introduction to the Domaine, we have Côtes du Rhône, two Côtes du Rhône Villages, including a single varietal Syrah, and magnificent single-vineyard, old-vine Cairanne, all 20% off as part of our French sale.

Villa Noria Infusions Orange wine (left) is white wine made like red wine, the orange-amber colour coming from extended contact with the skins and seeds resulting in colour and tannins.

Muscat grapes are harvested at night to preserve freshness and avoid any form of oxidation. Natural fermentation occurs at low temperatures and without the addition of sulphites or yeast, with ageing on fine lees until bottling.

Pale amber in the glass and spellbinding on the nose with notes of ginger ale, candied fruit, apple and redcurrant jelly. The palate is structured and dry, but well balanced, autumn fruits with gingerbread and secondary flavours of orange peel, dried apricot and finishing with tangy redcurrant jelly.

Villa Noria Amfòra Natural Orange wine (right) is made naturally without sulphites or yeast, is white wine made like red wine, where macerating the skins and seeds for three months results in the release of pigments and tannins which give the wine a coppery colour and grippy structure.

Grapes are sourced from a number of Villa Noria’s certified organic vineyards, this is a blend of Muscat, Clairette and Piquepoul. Following maceration, the wine is matured in terracotta amphora, whose porosity provides regular oxygenation and also helps reduce the acidity and round out the tannins.

Rich copper-amber in colour, this presents an atypical and very interesting aromatic profile with notes of gingerbread, candied orange, beeswax and honey. The palate is full flavoured, rich and rounded, Tanora-like with it’s ginger-spice nuances, baked apple and nutty notes, it’s softly textured with a slight bitterness from the tannins, with a taste of rhubarb and ginger jam on the finish.
