Grk - rare and famous Croatian native white wine

The town of Lumbarda on the island of Korcula is famous for Grk, the finest white wine of the same name as the Lumbarda autochthonous sort of grape that grows in the sandy vineyards of the Lumbarda. This is the only place in the world where this sort of grapes grows. Tasting of Grk wine is a must for tourists visiting the island of Korčula and Lumbarda. In Croatian language Grk can have 2 meanings – first for bitter taste, second for the Greek person. It is not known whether the wine was named after refined slightly biter taste or after the Greeks who founded their city at the beginning of the 3rd century BC in the place where Lumbarda is now. The fruit of this rich wine-growing tradition, modern technology and enology is a dry wine of distinguished personality recognizable by light-greenish-yellow color with golden flashes, accentuated aroma and noble bouquet. It is characterized by its rich, harmonious and completed taste, with a slightly bitter finish. Contains 12-14% alcohol with relatively modest total acid. First of all, the Greek loves everything that is best caught from the sea, and it fits well with the best white meat dishes and can even be served as an aperitif. Best served cooled at 12-13 °C. Thursday is reserved for truffles!
There are 70 sorts of truffles in the world, of which 34 come from Europe. The traditional truffle-producing countries are Italy, France and Spain, but Istrian forests in Croatia boast three sorts of black truffles as well as the big white truffle.

Because no sign of the truffle appears above ground, no human can spot it, so dogs (or, traditionally, pigs) are the key to a successful truffle hunt. Istrian truffle-hunting dogs (breks) may be mongrels, but they are highly trained.
The truffle-hunting season starts in October and continues for three months, during which time at least 3000 people and 9000-12,000 dogs wander around the damp Motovun forests. The epicentre of the truffle-growing region is the town of Buzet.
