Winemaking on the island of Hvar, Croatia is unique in the sense that it offers everything from fruity whites and bold reds to complex orange wines. Dalmatia in general and the island of Hvar, in particular, has a rocky landscape and hillsides with an infinite varie

ty of microclimates which results in a wine-growing area where terroir is a crucially important factor. Most famous are the vineyards on the steep southern slopes of the island where the grapes are exposed to double or even triple insulation, directly from the sun as well as from the reflection of the sea and the surrounding stones and cliffs.

We highly recommend visiting some of the Hvarwine winemakers if you want to get a taste of Hvar and to experience the beauty of the winemaking on the island🥂 The winemakers are located all over the island and offer personal and unique wine tastings in their beautiful wineries, cellars or konobas (bistros).

All wineries except Podrum Vujnović is located relatively close to each other and can be booked during the same day if you are up for a full day of wine.

Arriving the island of Hvar and the home town of Stari Grad today☀️

Winemaking on the island of Hvar, Croatia dates back 2500 years and have been an integral part of everyday life ever since Greek settlers first set foot on the now UNESCO protected Stari Grad plain. The winemakers on the island take immense pride in the careful growing of grapes in the best locations, some of which get as many as 2718 sunshine hours per year.

During the holidays we spent a lot of time outside in front of our new fireplace in the little red cabin, deep inside the Swedish forest. One day Zoran made a deer stew with loads of root vegetables and red wine. Lucky for us we had a bottle of Medvid, 2015 to accompany our flavourful and rich stew. There is really no better pairing with this full-bodied red wine from the sunniest island in Europe ☀️

Duboković Wines Medvid 2015 - it is insanely good...

Pronounced nose of red cherries, caramel, coconut and perfectly integrated smoky, burnt almond notes. Underneath all of that is a layer of dried Mediterranean herbs, most notably bay leaf and oregano. However, this is all present only until the next sniff. The wine then develops aromas of nutmeg, and even cinnamon. And then again red cherries, coconut... like a kaleidoscope of sweet spices.

On the palate, wine is fresh, with beautiful acidity, nothing overwhelming, just perfectly balanced that it keeps asking for another glass. Tannins are, as expected for this grape variety and for this vintage very present, but they are ripe, slightly drying, kind of chunky and muscular but at the same time very rounded, smooth and well integrated. Finish is very, very long, sweet and with not even a hint of alcohol. Drink this now or keep for another 10 to 15 years.

The Other wanted to celebrate that her new solo emo project "Feetsoul" just released the single "I cry because I'm happy" on her record label "Alone".

Speaking of labels, n.11 is the 11th label by This is a rosé that quite happily tucks itself in among orange wines. Everytime we try this vibrant maker of summer nights (I said NO! It's not winter) we find new notes and depth. It's a serious and very fun and easygoing piece of work that transfer my mind to the tranquility of a warm beach.

Happy New Year’s ⭐️ Sretna nova godina ⭐️ Gott nytt år

It’s been an eventful year for Hvarwine and both me (Sara Rasmussen) and Zoran Pejović are so grateful for all the wonderful moments 2021 has offered. Thousands of people visited the sunny island of Hvar this summer and a significant number of these people had the pleasure of visiting some of the boutique winemakers on the beautiful island☀️

We’ve also expanded the Hvarwine family with new passionate winemakers, Pavičić Vina, located in the small town of Vrbanj where they both grow their own grapes and make wine in the old cellar below their house. The Pavičić brothers have had a great start to their journey as winemakers so far and we can’t wait to see what they will produce in 2022.

Most importantly we’ve made new friends such as the passionate and very knowledgable natural wine lover from Stockholm, Johannes aka as well as Maria aka Vinoduo.se who sold her house to become a travelling sommelier.

We want to thank all our wonderful partner winemakers for their relentless work and for making such extraordinary wine. The hard work that goes into making low impact wine without heavy machinery requires grit that only a winemaker can have.

Iconic red wine in the Dalmatian mountains ☀️🍷

A couple of weeks ago me Sara Rasmussen and Zoran Pejović had the pleasure of joining our dear friends Marko Bilić and Zeljana Bilic at their mountain house in the beautiful Dolac outside of Split. Of course, we brought some iconic wine from the island of Hvar. We paired it with Croatian, free-range tomahawk steak marinated in fresh rosemary from the garden🌿

This label is a beautifully rounded and full-bodied red wine that pairs perfectly with red meat or just as it is after dinner. It's made from the indigenous grape variety Plavac Mali that has been grown on the steep southern hills on the island of Hvar.

Part 1: Zoran and Ivo Duboković's Sunday venture into the depths of the Duboković wine cellar (by Zoran Pejović)🍷 --- Ivo Duboković never disappoints. On the contrary, every visit to his home and cellar is a true peak experience. After an amazing lunch we went cellar searching for some older vintages of his iconic #Medvid🍷 We decided to try the 2008, which was an extremely hot vintage that produced big reds all across #Dalmatia. Hot vintage doesn't necessarily mean the best vintage for long term aging though. One of the challenges we face in Dalmatia is that very few winemakers have experience with making wines capable of long term bottle aging. Other than Miloš from Pelješac and Duboković there is not many that can pull out a bottle from their cellar that is 15 years or older. Anyway, we opened Medvid 2008 and the first nose was unmistakably the one you would expect from an older Plavac Mali from the best locations in Dalmatia, the Southern slopes of the island ofHvar or Dingač on Pelješac. The wine had entered its tertiary stage, both color wise as well as on the nose. The sweet notes of balsamic, prunes, raisins, chocolate and coconut with some herbal freshness still lingering there between these sweet aromas. On the palate the wine still had pleasant acidity with very soft tannin, and very, very long and sweet finish. Our Story

I first visited Hvar and some of its gifted winemakers in summer 2019 and I was fortunate enough to attend wine tastings organised by Zoran. Ever since, I’ve been wanting to make wine from the island of Hvar accessible to people outside of Croatia. Luckily Zoran, who has an even greater passion and knowledge about wine shared this desire.

This quote came to me while looking out over the lake in my hometown in Sweden, contemplating life and longing for a zip of Croatian wine. By that time it was obvious what we had to do and the rest is history as they say.

I hope you will like Hvar wine and what we have to offer. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any help navigating the world of wine from the beautiful island of Hvar. Both Zoran and I are here to share our passion for wine and Croatian wine from the island of Hvar in particular.
