DOMENICO CLERICO AT OUR ANNUAL TASTING! 🍷🇮🇹
How can we talk about Barolo without mentioning the name of the legendary Domenico Clerico who was, once, an important and active figure of Piedmontese viticulture. His small estate is located in Monforte d’Alba. In addition to being one of the most respected names in all Barolo, his wines are renowned for exceptional winemaking and expression of terroirs from four of the greatest crus of Monforte: Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, and Mosconi.
Started in 1979, following a brief engagement in the olive oil business, Domenico Clerico concentrated his efforts on single-vineyard expressions. Interestingly, like many of the modernist persuasion, he began the traditional way of utilizing the hallmark vessels, Slavonian oak casks. Later in 1990, the barrique method subsequently replaced the traditional method. There was a time, Clerico employed new barrique exclusively for all of his Barolos. He soon moderated these absolute tendencies, with new barrels now constituting between 35 and 40 percent of his ageing vessels.
Domenico sadly left us in 2017 letting his wife, Giuliana, and his devoted winemaker, Oscar Arrivabene, continue his legacy and “keep carrying his dream to the next step” as Oscar likes to say.
Oscar Arrivabene, who is still the winemaker and now became general manager of today’s Domenico Clerico, has made a few tweaks to winemaking, moving away from smaller oak barrels to embrace large casks instead. For the first time, both the 2019 Barolo Ginestra Pajana and the Barolo Ginestra Ciabot Mentin went into 5,000-liter wood vessels.
