"Son of a craftsman and the last link in a lineage of stonecutters."
Xavier Vignon originally from Picardy, this insatiable pioneer of terroirs followed a career path worthy of his curiosity, strengthened by the culture of an omnipresent French art-de-vivre.
Leaving his paternal calling to one side,
he developed a passion for mathematics, agronomy, geology and paleontology from an early age and, after much searching, embraced a scientific career by becoming an oenologist.

He took a ten year tour of France during which he got to know France’s wine regions,
two of which left a particularly strong impression on him: Champagne and Bordeaux.
Fascinated by the science of blending,
driven by the notion of freedom and loyal to his own high standards,
Xavier Vignon began to build his project,
nourished with his own experiences and personal encounters.

French Winery Trip - Domaine Bernard Defaix

Fourth generation from a family of vine-growers, Bernard Defaix started with 2 ha in 1959. From this period, a method to protect the vineyard against spring frost was discovered. Thanks to this, the vine-growers could be sure to have a minimum of harvest every year and so they began to develop stable trade markets.

The two sons of Bernard have been managing the domain since twenty years or so. Sylvain is in charge of the vinification, the ageing, the bottling and the preparation of orders. Didier takes care of the vineyard and the general management of the domain. Helene, Didier’s wife, looks after the administrative and the commercial part. So, from the vine to the final customer, the family looks after all the operations!

French Winery Trip - Domaine Tortochot🍷

Domaine Tortochot is a family estate, which from 1865. Paul Tortochot was the first, followed by Felix, Gabriel and today Chantal, the 4th generation. This domaine owns 12 hectares, 80% of-which are in the villages appellation, 10% premiers and grand crus: They have 7 rows of Clos de Vougeot that usually provide enough for 3 barrels.

The domaine is organic certified for their whole 12 hectares – that’s 28 parcels for 11 wines. Large stainless steel tanks and others with enamel coatings are used for fermentation: 5-7 days of cold maceration after destemming, no auto pigeage. A mix of coopers and there’s no racking. The wines stay in their barrels, on their fine lees, until the following December.

French Winery Trip - Chateau Valandraud🍇🍷
Château Valandraud is one of the top Bordeaux wine producers situated in the Right Bank of Saint-Émilion appellation. It was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé “B” in the 2012 Classification of Saint-Emilion wine where their wines are consistently rated with very high scores from top Critics.

The Chateau started humbly on a 0.6 ha vineyard and from a garage turned into a vinification cellar. Since then, Chateau Valandraud has grown to a 10.70 ha vineyard based on the clayey limestone terroir of Saint Etienne de Lisse.

French Winery Trip – Champagne Andre Clouet🥂

Andre Clouet is a small independent Champagne house. Its history is very long, dating back to 1751. The Clouet family 's manor was built in Bouzy, the famous Pinot Noir producing area. The production of Blanc de Noirs champagne has also become the specialty of Andre Clouet Winery, and has established an excellent reputation.

Andre Clouet's vineyard is located among the only 17 rare Grand Cru vineyards in the Champagne region. It produces the highest grade grapes and is rare in quantity. In order to extract the most perfect grape juice, Andre Clouet still uses traditional wooden square presses and cumbersome brewing techniques that are time-consuming and labor-intensive.

has been cut from 100 percent to 10 percent.

Caroline, the brand ambassador of Chateau Valandraud, has 24 years of experience in the wine industry, she is currently working for Chateau Valandraud and Thunevin, having also managed her own winery in Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux for 12 years, taking care of the vineyard and helped in winemaking.
