OK, it’s a little bit fruitier than most Spanish sparkling wine but it’s made from 100% tempranillo, which gives fruit that is all strawberry and redcurrants with a creamy mousse and a soft round finish. December also means Christmas in the world of wines so this month our Wine Buyer Richard Allisette Recommends our.......❤️ Six of The Best Mixed Case. 💚 And here's why.... “The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it”. So, in the spirit of Oscar Wilde, we bring you six of the best classic French wines. Your challenge is not to drink them before the big day! Pol Roger 'White Foil' Brut was Sir Winston Churchill’s favourite and it has been ours too for many years. A classic blend of the three champagne grapes, crisp and fresh, there is no better Christmas aperitif. Both our Sancerre and our Chablis come from small quality-conscious family domaines – who place quality first. Either would be perfect with a seafood starter over Christmas. The reds - Bordeaux, Burgundy and Chateauneuf-du-Pape – classic areas but you still have to buy carefully. The left bank of Bordeaux, is always the a great choice at Christmas as the merlot grape usually dominates, giving soft plummy fruit. Our St Emilion is made mainly from organically grown merlot making it ripe, juicy and polished with flavours of black fruits and almonds. Perfect with lamb or beef. Our Givry offers far better value than the Cotes d’Or wines to the north – Laurent Mouton makes wonderfully uplifted burgundy with rich red berried fruit and spice. The perfect wine with feathered game at the Christmas table. Finally, Chateauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine Mathieu who have been making wine since 1600 so they’ve had time to get it right! They use all 13 permitted grape varieties in this wine which is rich and silky with flavours of black fruits, with hints of pepper and spice. It will cope with the complex flavours of a traditional Christmas lunch but is also great with cold cuts on Boxing Day or a cheese plate. Time to give in – you know you’re worth it.
