NEW HIGH STREET SHOP OPENING THIS SATURDAY

We’re pleased to announce that we are opening a shop in Stockbridge High Street tomorrow, Saturday 20th July. It’s only taken us 22 years, but we have been looking for a potential site for some time and when a beautiful shop in Stockbridge (about halfway between Wi******er and Salisbury) became available we jumped at it.

Right now we are filling the newly repainted shelves with over 400 wines and it looks great. We are at Unit 1, The Vine, High St, Stockbridge, SO20 6HF.

9am to 4pm on Saturday
10am to 6.30pm Tuesday to Friday

We will be closed this Saturday. It's the first time (barring Christmas and Covid) that we have been closed on a Saturday in 21 years, and it's due to an unfortunate congruence of half term, holidays and our colleague slated to work unfortunately breaking their leg (not at work!). We apologise - we regret the loss of sales too. We will be open again after the Bank Holiday on Tuesday 28th May at 9.00 am and we will be here until 5.30 pm today if you want to collect any wine.

RETURN OF THE GODS....
We have just received a big shipment from the Cape: it’s time to get the stacks moving, in particular the outstanding wines of Domaine Des Dieux (“of the Gods”  because it’s at the very top of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just above Ataraxia). Here the vineyards are cooled by breeezes and the clouds which cling to the Babylonstoren mountain.

Domaine des Dieux is one of our favourite estates. Megan Mullis and her viticulturist husband Shane produce superb sparkling and still wine, based on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These are wines that we love for their remarkable value and that consistently garner critical praise and awards.  

All three wines are rooted in traditional styles, with the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir having Burgundian notes and the Claudia MCC being a dead ringer for vintage Champagne. That said, all three are proudly South African, displaying the elegance and purity of fruit associated with wines of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley.

The wines you should be drinking this weekend!

We LOVE these wines from Domaine des Garriguettes and it would appear we’re not the only ones. Both Tamlyn Currin and Victoria Moore have given the Tradition effusive reviews and Tamlyn commented that the Béret Bleu is an “Outrageously low price!” (jancisrobinson.com, 1st December 2023).

They’re both currently 10% off by the bottle and 15% off by the case so now is the perfect opportunity to try them for yourself. Fancy both? Franz Schneider works his family’s tiny (just 7 hectares) vineyard holding dispersed around Halbturn in Burgenland at the far eastern edge of Austria, south-east of Vienna and just a few kilometres from Hungary. Here red grapes benefit from lovely sunny conditions, but the local meso-climate is affected by proximity to the Neusiedlersee, a huge shallow lake, so the summer heat is moderated by the expanse of water. Since we started working with Franz his wines have won international acclaim. Key to the appeal of these attractively red-fruited wines is Franz’s light touch with oak, as he prefers 500 litre Hungarian oak barrels and only a small proportion new.

We are determined to promote Franz's wines because they deliver delicious fruit, great concentration, surprising potential for ageing and terrific value for money. In short, they are brilliant.

Our Christmas discounts are running online until the end of the month so do visit the website over the holidays. We will be sending wine out on Wednesday 27th & Thursday 28th for delivery before the New Year; and delivering that week in and around Hampshire.

Yes, here at SVS we all drink. Like most of the wine trade, in a pact with the devil, we sign away a living wage in exchange for wine bought at a staff discount. We've selected six whites and six reds (whites chosen by Lauren and Michael and reds by Alistair and Simon), favourites for home consumption, and offer them as a mixed dozen with a 15% discount.

The Rhône is the region of stone (think of the south’s galet pudding-stones and the north’s granite), vines and sun. We focus on small family-owned estates offering quality and value, almost all farming with organics or bio-dynamics.

All of these wines are full of fruit. Grenache-based wines from the south are generous and warming; Syrah from the north displays purity and finesse. As the nights draw in and cooler weather arrives, here are bottles you need at hand.

Next week we have not one but two tastings scheduled!

On Wednesday 14th join us for an informal walk-round tasting in the light and airy upstairs room at Stockbridge Town Hall of some 25-30 wines which will set you up for the warmer weather. Expect: fresh, crisp and aromatic whites, to include Sauvignon Blanc and unoaked Chardonnay; a selection of rosés; and light reds from the Loire, Beaujolais, Italy and Austria. This tasting is free to attend but do let us know if you're planning to join by dropping us a DM or emailing.

On Thursday 15th we will be hosting a masterclass in the fine wine room at our shop in Twyford. Join Michael to explore organic & biodynamic wines. He'll explain what these terms mean and what impact such practices can have on the wines. Attendance is limited to just 10 people and charcuterie and cheese will be served alongside the wines. Tickets cost £30 and can be booked on the website.

We will be hosting a fun masterclass for just twelve people in our fine wine room at the shop. We will be tasting fizz to fortified (and everything inbetween) for the upcoming festive season, covering the stories behind the wines and winemaker, as well as highlighting some of the best ways to enjoy them. Tannat grape’s home is in south-west France, where it was first mentioned as growing in Madiran in the late 18th century.  Unlike many French grape varieties it has not been widely planted across the globe – perhaps because of its gutsy rusticity. It has really come into its own in Madiran with climate change, as it prefers a little more heat to give its best - as you will see from the Argentine and South African examples, especially now that smart winemakers are adept at smoothing the grape’s robust tannins. These are deeply hued, hearty wines perfect for autumn and winter drinking – and they keep well too. Consider too its now widely accepted health benefits: the grape has very high levels of procyanidins, anti-oxidants which protect the heart and cardio-vascular system. Apparently the Gers homeland in France has double the national average of nonagenarian men!

DELIVERIES AVAILABLE

We are open for business, sending wine out nationally via APC and delivering locally ourselves. Drivers have instructions to place boxes by the doorstep (or elsewhere if you prefer), will not request signatures, and will stand well away. Our shop in Twyford has now closed. Given the government advice we feel it is not responsible to offer collection at the shop. If you want the shop experience for advice do just call us and we can make recommendations.
