With some long-awaited signs of spring, thoughts turning to Beaujolais Cru and a trio of the region’s most acclaimed producers: classic Brouilly from , Juliénas from rising star and new Saint-Amour from Jean-Paul Brun, one of the relentless promoters of this still under appreciated region and its serious potential for quality. Beautifully made wines all three.

Back in stock, superb value pair from in Terrasses du Larzac, only created an appellation in 2005 but fast garnering a reputation as the source of some of the Languedoc’s most distinctive, high quality new producers alongside established veterans like Domaine de Montcalmès. A lively Vermentino/Viognier blend plus a brooding, supple garrique-laden red of Mourvèdre, Carignan, Grenache and Syrah.

Superb visit this week to in deepest Kent, now some 60ha of vines on the edge of Romney Marsh looking particularly picturesque on the cusp of autumn. The wines have long been favourites and deservedly sit in the top tier of UK producers, especially for sparkling wines such as the late-disgorged Blanc de Blancs but also some more unusual bottlings like the sweet Chardonnay (made in ice-wine style using cryo-freezing) and single-vineyard Pinot Meunier. An impressive showcase for English winemaking.

A few arrivals, just in time for the weekend: 2024 Fino de Jerez ‘En Rama’ from , new 2023 (but age worthy) rosé from star Bandol estate (as ever, just a tiny quantity of this) and a new vintage of glorious Fleurie (really more of a Moulin-à-Vent) ‘Clos de la Roilette’ from Alain Coudert. Essential summer drinking.

A truly stellar line-up from this week’s terrific South African tasting with Warren Davies sharing his considerable knowledge of the Cape’s long and varied winemaking history. Some of the best examples around of the classic varieties from leading estates in Franschhoek, and in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape and in Bot River, all much enjoyed by a packed shop and bar on a distinctly sultry midsummer evening.

Just arrived, a brace of whites from the glorious 2022 vintage: superb Bourgogne Blanc ‘Cuvée des Forgets’ from a handful of parcels on the Volnay side of Meursault and the real deal from the 1.5ha ‘Les Tillets’ vineyard planted on shallow soils on pure limestone. Complex, refined expressions of Chardonnay both.

A few of our best rosé wines, unquestionably better late than never: classically elegant Côtes de Provence from (featuring the local and more unusual Tibouren variety); a highly distinctive, expressive blend of native Catalan varieties Sumoll, Parellada and Xarello from renowned in Penèdes; and a charming cherry/raspberry scented Tuscan Sangiovese rosato from Alberto Antonini at in western Chianti. All three are certified organic and beautifully made.
