Colder darker mornings. From our store to your door - still delivering newspapers around The Cotswolds, Boldon Colliery, West Boldon and East Boldon. Even if it wasn’t a Banksy it did make the headlines on the Channel 4 news at 7.00 pm last night !!
I was on LBC earlier this afternoon - hot on the heels of the government announcement…
Here’s an example of how Postmasters remuneration works alongside a comparison of how it works if you’re the CEO. If you think this is another POL scandal - share from here to other groups and your page. Subpostmasters throughout the country are suffering at the hands of corporate greed.
There’s a lot of talk around the closure of the Post Office in Herons and who will be taking it over. So, here’s the low down for you of what I think has happened and what I think will happen.
The short version is 1) it’s closing because it doesn’t make enough money to justify the space it takes there and 2) it’s unlikely another retail business in the Colliery or New Town will decide to take the Post Office counter in. So Boldon Colliery and New Town areas are likely to be left without a Post Office.
So, why haven’t Herons been able to make enough money out of the Post Office and why is it unlikely that another business will take the Post Office in?
The simple truth is that the vast majority of Post Offices and and the subpostmasters who operate them are NOT paid a salary anymore. Instead they’re paid a commission on every transaction carried out. For example for every 1st Class Stamp I sell I’m paid around 6p commission.
Most of the money made by Post Office Ltd goes to paying its senior managers. The Chief Executive earned a £400k bonus on top of his salary of more than £400k. For me to earn that kind of money I’d need to sell 6 million first class stamps. Just to give a bit of context to that - counting aloud to a million would take you 12 days - that’s just how big a figure 1 million is.
The Chief Executive isn’t the only member of senior management to earn big money and big bonuses. Post Office commissions are so small because senior managers pay and bonuses are so big and there are so many senior managers to pay - there are 63 Directors, 12 Chiefs of “whatever”, 145 Heads of “whichever” and 709 Managers of “under that lot”. A total of 929 managers who between them with a workforce of 2578 take around 60% of the revenue generated by subpostmasters at their counters around the country.
This is the reason why the commissions are so small. So then why does West Boldon still have a Post Office when so many (a
