The Antão Vaz grape is indigenous of Vidigueira (Alentejo region) where our winery is located. As the most important white wine grape varietal in the Alentejo, it is particularly well adapted to the hot Alentejo climate in spring and summer.

Antão Vaz produces a high-quality, lasting, full-bodied wine with a citrus yellow colour, fruity, with overtones of citrus and ripe tropical fruit. To the mouth the taste is mild with a slight acidity, adding to the wine’s elegant aroma and its lasting, agreeable finish.

The grape provides a wonderful single variety wine, as is the case with our two Antão Vaz labels, but it also does well, blended with the Arinto and Síria grapes.

Na grande prova de vinhos tintos do Alentejo até 15€, o Gáudio Clássico obteve 17 pontos e a menção especial de “Boa Escolha”, acompanhado pela belíssima nota de prova:

"Lote de Touriga Nacional e Alicante Bouschet, ‘temperado’ com Aragonez e Tinta Miúda, da Vidigueira. Aroma muito bem conseguido, exuberante e definido, a revelar excelente evolução. Ameixa, erva doce, barrica, ca****bo, paprika. Fruta madura em boca, barrica presente novamente, boa acidez, conjunto muito apelativo. A beber desde já. (14%)"

INAO APPROVES SIX NEW GRAPES IN BORDEAUX - TOURIGA NACIONAL & ALVARINHO

The Institut National de l’Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) has formally approved the use of six new varieties in Bordeaux that were first proposed in 2019.

The French agricultural governing body has approved the use of four new red varieties – Arinarnoa, Castets, Marselan and Touriga Nacional – and two white varieties – Alvarinho and Liliorila – with plantings authorised for this year.

The varieties were put forward by winemakers in the Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur AOCs (not Pauillac, Margaux etc) in the summer of 2019 as a potential means of dealing with different growth cycles and ripening periods in the face of a changing climate.

Scientists in Bordeaux looked at 52 varieties for potential future use before settling on the final six which were considered particularly suitable for their ability to handle hydric stress and for being later-ripening.

When plantings begin, the new varieties will be limited to just 5% of an estate’s total surface area and no more than 10% of the blend in either red or white.

These new varieties will sit alongside the already permitted varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Carménère, Petit Verdot for red – and Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Merlot Blanc and Mauzac for white.

Herdade do Moinho Branco - Alicante Bouschet

Rounded and well-bodied, dark in colour and smooth tannin's from the single grape (100% Alicante Bouschet) which ages well in the bottle.

In February 2020 Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded 92 points for this wine.

The wines are renowned for the their dark colour, richness and concentration with great tannin's. This wine is set to age well in the bottle and is accessible now.

Planted within the 'schist' soils at Ribafreixo resulting in a smooth, yet rich and powerful presence. Over time with ageing the tannin's will no doubt soften and become even more silky. Most producers include the Alicante Bouschet with blends, here we have 100% Alicante Bouschet, a testament to the skills of those within the winery and vineyards in the Alentejo region of Portugal.

The grape was created over 150 years ago in a small vineyard within the French Languedoc, now we are seeing the rising star becoming more widely appreciated by consumers outside of Portugal, now available here in the UK.

Herdade do Moinho Branco Alicante Bouschet is a limited edition of 3804 numbered bottles and Ribafreixo Wines’ strong bet on a varietal that is typical to the region and near and dear to our hearts.

One of few wines produced where both the flesh and skin are red. Until now we have only used it in our blended wines, but the unmatched quality and outstanding character of the 2014 harvest persuaded us to launch our first-ever single varietal red to celebrate our queen of the Alentejo.

More than just a top-end wine, it is a sincere homage to the fact that this variety chose the Alentejo to display all its splendour and potential as in no other place. A truly special wine that was barrel fermented, then matured in new French oak casks for eighteen months and in bottle for a further twenty-six.

Full bodied and well rounded, this red wine will only improve with age.
