Fernao Pires was planted in the Cape decades ago for brandy production. Strange Bru (the weird brother in Afrikaans) celebrates the charms of a Portuguese cultivar finding its feet in a foreign field. Best drunk in its youth this wine is not for later, it’s definitely Fernao.

PRODUCTION

Of the last blocks of Fernao left in the Cape this is the oldest at 37 years old. In Portugal the variety is also known as Maria Gomes and was introduced in South Africa primarily for brandy production but fell out of favour. Which is where we all come in. Before we lose ‘em let’s use ‘em. Rock-star winemakers are sniffing around this block now which is good for its future but here is an accessibly-priced expression of the loveliness of the Found before it gets Lost.

TASTING NOTE

An expressive, aromatic nose with green citrus, lemongrass and lightly herbal notes. A crisp,appetising style, a streak of minerality underpins the fresh and vibrant fruit leading to a clean, taut finish.

FOOD MATCH

Coconut infused curry, fish with a mango salad, pan roasted chicken.

Rare Vineyards Malbec, Pays d'Oc

Malbec has recently become appreciated by the discerning wine-drinker looking for something a little different from the New World and Argentina in particular. However, Malbec’s home is in south-west France as this velvety, overtly fruity wine with violet aromas and some spice on the palate shows.

Soft and spicy partner for beef and chicken dishes with spicy, tangy or fruity sauces.

Bright and refreshing Albariño from this estate in Salnés Valley, Rias Baixas.

The grapes are sourced from pergola-trained Albariño vines, cultivated in sandy soils in the Salnés Valley. They are selected in the vineyard and hand-harvested into 20kg crates, then further sorted at the winery. The destemmed grapes are pressed, and fermentation takes place for around 15 days at 16- 18oC using wild yeasts. Partial malolactic fermenatation occurs, again with naturally-occuring yeasts.

TASTING NOTE

A fresh and bright Albariño with notes of stone fruit and orange blossom. Peach fruit with lightly tropical notes, hints of tangerine and mouthwatering citrus zest character on the palate. Dry and crisp on the finish.

FOOD MATCH

A perfect match for all sorts of seafood and grilled vegetable dishes.

Authentic Veronese Appassimento from the classic Valpolicella varieties, predominantly Corvina, dried for 30 days and aged 6 months in oak.

PRODUCTION

Produced from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes harvested from hillside vineyards north of Verona. 'Appassimento' refers to the process by which the grapes are dried for a few months before being pressed and vinified - this technique is more common in the Veneto than elsewhere in Italy. In this instance the grapes are dried for 30 days before vinification, and the wine spends 6 months in oak. The resulting red is rich with some residual sweetness.

TASTING NOTE

Bright berry and black cherry aromas, and a touch of spice. The palate has all of Valpolicella's appealing fresh cherry and ripe bramble fruit, with the weight and complexity typical of Appassimento wines. Supple tannins lead to a finish of delicate sweetness, offset by fresh acidity.

FOOD MATCH

Great with barbecues, slow-cooked and caramelised meat dishes, or strong-flavoured cheeses.

Cantina di Venosa Terre di Orazio, Aglianico del Vulture ITALY

PRODUCTION

The Aglianico grapes are grown near Venosa, mid-way between Naples and Bari. They are sourced from a selection of older vineyards, hand-harvested into 12-15 kg crates. The grapes are picked in the early morning and immediately transported to the cellar to maintain quality. Temperature-controlled fermentation (23-28oC) in stainless steel takes place for around 10 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 15 months in a mixture of small, 25hl French and Slavonian oak casks.

TASTING NOTE

A warm and richly-flavoured, oak-aged, Aglianico with aromas of ripe black fruit, cassis, leather and smoky notes. The generous palate is packed full of black berry fruits, with layers of spicy oak and mocha, and balancing bright acidity. Concentrated, with a good depth of flavour, and chunky yet supple tannins.

FOOD MATCH

At its best with rich pasta dishes, red meats and mature cheeses.

Adobe is a line of organic reserve wines that reflect the highest quality of the vineyards and a deep respect for the environment and its workers. Everything used to make this organic wine is of natural origin. Grapes are hand harvested. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks for 3 months with selected yeasts.

TASTING NOTE

Pale almost Provençale, pink in colour with bright alluring aromas of lemon vest and white flowers, with super fresh juicy with a cranberry dry refreshing finish. Delicate and easy to drink.

A lighter wine produced by Piedmonte’s most forward thinking co-operative. 5.5% abv perfect for these Summery days ☀️

Bright and aromatic with fresh crushed raspberries, violets and dried rose petals. The palate is juicy and lightly sparkling, and bursting with fresh grape and red berry fruit. The sweetness is perfectly balanced by mouth-watering acidity and a delicately fragrant finish.
