Horsley Community Shop

Horsley Community Shop We're an award-winning, community-owned village shop, and the hub of a thriving village in the Cotswolds. But we're so much more than just a grocery store.

We sell store cupboard basics, household products, cakes & bakes, hot & cold drinks and loads of local produce including the famous Horsley Sausage. We are an award-winning, community-owned, volunteer-run village shop, and the hub of a thriving village in the Cotswolds. We sell everyday store cupboard essentials, household products, organic produce, cakes and bakes, hot and cold drinks, and loads

of locally produced goods such as Godsell's Cheeses, Cotswold Handmade Meringues, Day's Cottage Apple Juice and the famous Horsley Sausage ("a succulent, finely balanced, terrific banger", Matthew Fort, The Guardian). We sell fresh coffee and teas to drink in or take away, stamps, and newspapers on Sundays. We have free wi-fi, we're a parcel drop point, and a fishmonger sells fresh fish every Wednesday 10.30-11.00am. Not only that, we're very good value (see our price comparison posts), the parking is easy and the staff are delightful. You'll find us behind the 3-in-1 church and the award-winning pub The Hog, and beside the sensational new children's play area and playing fields. Come and see what we've got!

Your village shop is OPEN on Bank Holiday Monday, 9.00am-1.00pm. (That's today for those who've lost track of whether it's Tuesday, Christmas or the Mediterranean.)

We've got a shedload of ice creams, which you can eat on the veranda; we've got properly local Ruskin Mill trout and vegetables; and we've got lots of grow-yer-own vegetables and flowers available for a donation outside the shop.

So you don't need to leave Horsley. (Who'd want to leave Horsley anyway?) 😎

One of our wonderful volunteers, Horsleyite David Bullock, is the new Chair of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. We love the following from the latest edition of Cotswold Life: "Which shop could you not live without? Horsley Village Shop." Thanks a million David!

After retiring as the National Trust’s head of nature conservation last year, David Bullock, now chair of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, has never been busier

Don't slog to the shops. Order a Marrows Fruit and Veg Box from your sofa and collect it from your community shop. Make your life a little easier.

Nearly a dozen Marrows Fruit and Veg Boxes were ordered last week and we've had fantastic feedback: fresh, excellent quality and a great variety. The picture shows exactly what was in last week's box.

To order, please email the shop ([email protected]) by Tuesday. Boxes are available to collect on Fridays and cost Β£15.

12/04/2020

Revised opening hours:
Monday-Friday: 9.00am-1.00pm
Saturday: 9.00am-4.00pm
Sunday: 9.00am-12.00 noon
If you have a question or request, please call the shop on 01453 836662 or email [email protected]. (This page is managed remotely and therefore unlikely to be able to answer queries.) Good health to all.

11/04/2020

The shop is now a collection point for 'Marrows' Fruit and Vegetable boxes.

Marrows is a wholesale fruit and veg company based in Nailsworth. A box costs Β£15 per week and contains a selection of the following:

2kg of Maris Piper or similar potatoes and a bag of another type of potatoes
Onions, carrots, beetroot, parsnips, swede, cabbage, kale, mushrooms
Salad items such as lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, celery
Fruit, such as apples, pears, bananas.

Please note that this isn’t organic produce and the contents of the box will vary slightly from week to week depending on availability.

If you would like to order a fruit and veg box for Β£15 please email the shop ([email protected]) before Tuesday. Boxes will be available to collect from the shop on Fridays.

25/03/2020

The Community Shop continues to serve the village, but in line with current guidelines we are putting the following into operation:

Revised opening hours:
Monday-Friday: 9.00am-1.00pm
Saturday: 9.00am-4.00pm
Sunday: 9.00am-12.00 noon

In order to keep our staff, volunteers and customers as safe as possible, we are asking everyone to wash their hands on entering the shop. The facilities are there for you to use.

We ask that only two single people or one family come into the shop at one time and that you keep to the two-metre distance rule.

If you live in the parish of Horsley and you have a cough, temperature or cold, call us on 01453 836662 and we will take your order and arrange a collection or delivery.

We are struggling to re-stock at present because our suppliers cannot keep up with the high demand. However, we hope that this will adjust to normality very soon. In the meantime, please bear with us.

Together let's support one another: look out for the vulnerable and elderly, telephone someone who you know lives alone, wash your hands, and spread kindness and generosity.

We wish you and your families well.

HAVE YOU LOST YOUR HEARING AID?

A hearing aid was found along Horsley Fields and is now in the village shop waiting for its owner.

We're also holding a woman's coat that was left in the village hall.

In fact, we've probably got most of Horsley's marbles. Pop to the shop or call us on 01453 836662 to claim your gear.

Calling all local ARTISTS | Exhibit your work in the community shop!

The shop's gallery, where local artists can display and sell their work, is proving very popular and is booked up well into the future.

However, our exhibitor for March has had to postpone so we have a last minute opportunity for an artist to display their work next month.

If you have work that is ready to display in March and are interested in this opportunity, please get in touch with Sarah at the shop or by email: [email protected]. Thank you.

Alternatively, if you would like to book an exhibition for the future, August, September and October 2020 are available.

We're proud to support local businesses. This month we're stocking the produce of two more:

is a family-run business based in Wotton-under-Edge, supplying bird feed, bird feeders and nest boxes, as well as shelters for bees, bugs, bats and hedgehogs (and squirrels too apparently – like we haven't got enough of those little grey critters).

Well Fed Birds has an interesting page on their website on feeding farmland birds during the Hungry Gap – it's well worth a read here: https://bit.ly/2KAMOjm. And we love the pictures on their page too.

The shop also has freshly pressed apple juice from Inglestone Common, a stone's throw from Horsley along the A46. The Ashmead's Kernel juice is sensational. Honestly, buy a bottle and try it for yourself.

Ashmead's Kernel is an ancient and local variety of apple, first grown in Gloucester in the 1700s. It's a rough russet and won't win a beauty contest, but in the flavour stakes this zinging old timer holds its own. (If you're looking to plant an apple tree, flop an Ashmead's Kernel into your Gloucestershire sod. The fruit ripens late, which means you get fresh, crunchy apples up to Christmas and beyond.)

He will be outside the village shop TODAY, 10.30-11.00am.

Pete has a fantastic selection of fresh fish, smoked fish, shellfish and pΓ’tΓ©s.

Come along and see for yourself.

Cash or cheque please, as card machines often don't work when you're a mobile fishmonger.
