Today was our last day delivering newspapers to residential customers.
We took the business over in summer 2019 as the Kiosk and around 800 delivery customers that Fred and the late Andy had run successfully for a number of years.
We built the business to 1200 customers (1600 during lockdown) and alongside our loyal team gave everything 363 days a year to ensure newspapers made it through your doors.
The business became our life and 7 days a week we thought about newspapers. The industry is changing with decreasing margins from publishers, increasing carriage charges from wholesalers and ever increasing costs to staff the business and run vehicles.
It’s also a funny old industry where you can make all the plans you like but if there’s a bit of late drama in a football match or an A lister gets caught with his trousers down the newspapers are delayed and so are we!
We agonised over the decision to stop delivering and sell our deliveries for a long time as we wanted to keep our team of adults and children in work. The increased delivery cost that we’d have to pass on to our customers would’ve been ludicrous (doubling delivery charges to make it worthwhile) therefore we decided to sell to NewsTeam a national delivery company who have economies of scale as well as self employed contractors in their own vehicles rather than employed staff in company vans.
Despite the stress we’ve enjoyed the delivery arm of our business and we’ll miss our customers, team and some of the beautiful mornings in Suffolk. We won’t miss the pot holes, late wholesalers and soaking wet mornings!
Thank you to our loyal team of deliverers, sorters and packers over the years we couldn’t have done it without you.
Huge thank you to our loyal customers, we’re grateful for your custom over the last 4.5/5 years.
We hope all the paper boys and girls who’ve worked with us have enjoyed their first experience of paid work and it stands you in good stead for the future.
The Kiosk is still trading as normal in our ownership and you can buy your newspaper over the counter between 6am and 4pm every day except Sunday when we close at 10am.
We still accept vouchers for newspapers and can arrange shop saves for you to collect each day.
Look forward to seeing you all at the Kiosk soon where we can actually chat for longer as we’re less rushed!
See you soon.
