Excellent to be at the Chianti Classico Consorzio 100 Centenary London Party tonight.

Celebrating 100 years of the current Consorzio, whose aim is to ‘Protect and Promote’ 35 producers had come to London and showed their recent releases and also some amazing old wines too.

The Chianti Classico Consorzio have recently announced their UGA (Unita Geografiche Aggiuntive or Additional Geographical Units) which can be used on the Gran Selezione wines and shows more precisely where the wine comes from in the Chianti Classico Zone- a good move forward in my opinion.

Theo Randall, who I didn’t realise was head chef at The River Cafe for many years, is a British chef who specialises in Italian food and provided us with a fantastic array of Tuscan inspired dishes.

Was great to meet some of my Chianti wine friends again, to see some of my English wine friends who I haven’t seen since before Lockdown and also make some new wine contacts.

I generally stop drinking alcohol during Lent which starts tomorrow.

So tonight I had this splendid Nino Negri Valtellina Superiore 2013 I bought from the wi wry a few years ago.
I love Valtellina Nebbiolo: light, refreshing but with structure, depth and class. Wonderful wine which is so difficult to buy in the Uk

I ran a wine tasting recently which featured some interesting wines.
REAL - Naturally Fermented Sparkling Tea Royal Flush Sparkling Tea
Eins-Zwei-Zero Alcohol Free Riesling.
Cavit Wines Alta Italia Pinot Grigio 2021
Lidl GB Gruner Veltliner 2020 from Austria
Bodegas Beronia Rioja Crianza 2019 -Spain
HER wine collection Amanda Power Shiraz/Zinfandel from an all black women winery
H.M.Borges,Sucrs.lda 5 Year Madeira Medium Sweet Reserva

A lovely selection which the group fortunately liked!

The alcohol free wines were surprisingly good, especially the Reisling

The Gruner Veltliner was new to many but really well liked

Both the red wines were different, the light oak came through on the Rioja and everyone thought the Amanda was incrediabky powerful and strong

And people loves the Madeira Wine, which although different from the others was beautifully rich and intense with caramel and dried fruit notes.

So we couldn’t really choose an overall favourite: each one was liked.

Very good tasting menu dinner last night at Dobson and Parnell, Newcastle.
Was all great but I especially oved the oyster, asparagus and the scallop dishes, and the deserts which weren’t too sweet.
And some really interesting wines paired with the food including Château Ksara from Lebanon white which I’d tasted at ProWein earlier.

And really lovely service too!

Good to be back at a slightly more subdued ProWein in Düsseldorf. 13 huge exhibition halls, more spread out than in past years and fewer people but excellent that the wine world is getting back to normality.

Excellent to be at a real live trade tasting again today!

Only managed to taste about 10% of the wines presented but great to excite the exercise the taste buds again!

I pulled out from my stock this 2011 Frühburgunder from the Mayschoss cooperative in the Ahr Valley, Germany which I bought when I was there several years ago.

Pinot Noir Précoce or, as it is called in parts of Germany, Frühburgunder is an early ripening mutation of Pinot Noir; earthy, forest floor notes, quite rustic and crunchy with a kick of red and black fruit at the start.

Not as elegant as a Spätburgunder perhaps but a jolly acceptable and interesting wine for Friday night!

A couple of miles from where we’re staying is Charles Palmer Vineyards who we happened across whilst walking today so stopped for a tasting of their great wines. They only grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir so are making Champagne style quality wines. Loved the Blanc de Blancs and especially the special reserve 2013 with its truffle aromas. But all the wines have racing acidity with a backbone of Bramley Apple running through.

Will certainly pop back for some more, but with a car next time!

Opened up a case of Château Cissac I bought en premieur today. Lots of lovely black fruit on opening a bottle.

Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Catherine of Siena, Doctor of the Church, co-Patron of Europe and Patron of Italy.
So today we celebrated with a bottle from the first winery we ever visited in Italy; Rocca di Castagnoli in Tuscany in 2005.
It was a Stielle, 2000. Rich and fruity, dusty tannins with a good dollop of of Cabernet Sauvignon.

So. Best Wishes to all my European friends and especially those in Italy including Azienda Agricola e Agriturismo Il Palagio di Panzano Val delle Corti di Roberto Bianchi Susanna Grassi all my wine friends in Chianti Classico, Tuscany and Valtellina, my lovely balsamic vinegar producing friend Mariangela Montanari and every one else in Italy i know.

Hope to see you sometime soon!!

I’m thrilled to say that Roberto Bianchi of Val delle Corti di Roberto Bianchi is coming to London in March and has agreed to present his fantastic Chianti Classico wines at an exclusive tutored tasting evening.

The event will be on Wednesday 4 March at the The National Liberal Club, Westminster, London and tickets are priced at £27.50 a head.

Val delle Corti is a small estate punching well above its weigh in terms of quality. Roberto’s wines consistently achieve great reviews and scores in the wine press as examples of outstanding Chianti Classico wines with style, finesse and character. Jancis Robinson has said Roberto is a winemaker to watch.

Roberto will lead us through Val delle Corti Chianti Classico wines from 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2007, 2006 and a rare Chianti Classico from 1998

For tickets to this special evening please contact the National Liberal Club Booking Secretaries on 020 7930 9871 or message me and I’ll arrange things.

Don’t miss this special evening of fantastic Chianti Classico wines!

So which wine should I drink whilst there?

Brilliant evening last night presenting Italian Mountain Wines to the Brentwood Wine Appreciation Society.

Great Pinot Bianco from Franz Haas Winery with lovely fresh acidity and beautiful soft white fruit flavours

New and interesting grape for me, Nosiolo from Cesconi with lovely body

Really crisp and light white wine from the
Nebbiolo grape from La Spia Wine&Food

Then 4 awesome Nebbiolo red wines from the Valtellina region;

Casa vinicola Aldo Rainoldi Inferno 2016
Nino Negri Grumello Sossorosso 2016
Cantina Menegola Sassella Rupestre 2012
Plozza Vini Black Edition Sforzato 2015

These all showed really well, the Inferno showing it’s rough, intense side, the grumello showing as beautifully balanced, the Sassella showing its feminine style with loads of violet notes and the Sforzato it’s deep, deep droed fruit characteristic.

Brilliant evening - and looks like I’ll be running some more holidays to Valtellina- let me kow if you’re interested!

Looking forward to presenting some wines from Northern Italy to the Brentwood Wine Appreciation Society tonight. I’ve chosen wines from Northern Italy: Trentino-Alto Adige tonight. Some gems in there!

Fantastic visit to Tasca d’Almerita vineyards on the slopes of Etna. And fantastic wines too; earthy, massive and pronounced minerality but with delicious light red fruit and a very elegant style.

18/10/2019

First Sicilian wine on Sicily. LE SABBIE DELL’ETNA made with Carricante and Catarratto grapes. Lovely ripe citrus notes, lots of broom and gorse flavours with intense minerality from the volcanic soil. Beautiful.

Oh British Airways -you are a tease! I saw this bottle of Ch Batailey in the First Lounge and was all excited. Then discovered it was empty, and could find any more In the lounge.

But was good to try the Wiston, from the English South Downs, and a rather good Gruner Veltliner from Kamptal - both of which were excellent!

Good to taste Menegola wines again- they are aged that bit longer than many in Valtellina and have real class. And great to see the grapes looking so good as well!

Quick visit to Nino Negri for some wines for the Brentwood Wine Appreciation Society Tasting next month. Love their new tasting room!
