History in the making! ❄️

This weekend, six members of Shrewsbury Mountaineering Club braved the elements to bivvy on the summit of Foel Grach.

Minus 7 degrees, relentless winds, and snowy conditions made for a true test of endurance, but the experience was unforgettable.

So proud to be part of this club's first winter wild camp!

Next up, the annual meet in the !

18 of us headed for the annual January Lakes trip for a 'Burns Supper' and some hills of course! Surprisingly little snow for January but the clear skies belied a very chilly breeze. Bowfell, Angle Tarn area. Stayed at the Wayfarer's Club hut.

Since the last post we have enjoyed plenty of activity in the hills including a sunny trip to the Lakes camping near Nether Wasdale, cragging in the Dinorwic slate quarries near our hut and currently quite a few people are out in the Pyrenees. I am sure you can work out which pics are where!

A good year so far with local meets in N.Wales, a trip to Patterdale in the Lakes and then an excellent week in Newtonmore, Scotland Feb10-17th. The snow was 'adequate' until the end of the week when it melted very quickly to the point that some lower Munros were bare.

Great xmas party weekend at our hut along with a snowy ascent of Elidir Fawr. Snowball fight followed…of course.

Off to Dumfries and Galloway next week to give some our cycling members a 'fix'.

It is a long time since we updated this page...sorry; too busy enjoying ourselves in the great outdoors with trips to Cairngorms and Peak District in May, Brecon Beacons and Lake District in June as well as more local climbing and walking. Shropshire is such a beautiful place to live.
Pic of Braeriach in perfect weather. No rain or midges for a whole week!

Lovely week up in scotland Feb 18-25th near Oban so Munros such as Ben Cruachan, Ben Sgulaird and even Ben Lui were in our sights. Not very wintery but good enough and much drier than last time we were there. We were self catering at Achnacloich House and with 18 of us pppn it works out cheaper than a youth hostel dormitory!

A good start to 2023 with around 25 members taking a leisurely local walk in Shropshire on New Year's Day. The weather gods were shining on us for a brilliant weekend in Patterdale (January 20-22) and again for a glorious day out in N.Wales (Feb 5th) despite a complete lack of snow. Photos below are of Crib Goch and the Glyders on Feb 5th

We have had about 10 meets since we last posted anything including a monumental Xmas party at our hut. Now we look forward to a 2023 packed with action in the hills and mountains including 3 separate weeks in Scotland and 3 weekends in the Lake District.
Happy New Year to all.

Since the last post, as well as a continuing programme of UK based meets, we have had a brilliant two week long meet in the Dolomites with up to 16 members in attendance. We were based on a campsite near Cortina which is quite central and gives access to a range of Via Ferrata. A lot of VFs were done as well as scenic walks along gorges etc and some biking.

Updating you all to say that in the last two months we have been to our hut a few times, camped on Anglesey ( too hot, people had to go swimming) and stayed in a hut in Little Langdale. Most recently on Aug 7th there was a day out on Arenig Fawr, watching parapenters, with stunning weather...in fact from an outdoors person's point of view the summer has been rather good. Off to the Dolomites next!

Since the last post we have had a hut maintenance weekend at Clwt y Bel, been to the hills above Dinas Mawddwy, walked and climbed near Stoney Middleton and the Moelwyns AND 22 of us went to Gairloch for a week in May.
The weather at Gairloch was very average with just one really good day and mostly a lot of wind and showers interspersed with a few rays of sun.
Photos from the Gairloch week: Triple buttresses on Ben Eighe without colour to indicate the temperature in the hail shower, view of An Teallach from Beinn Dearg Bheag, a view on the Corbett Baosbheinn and a beach party on the last night...note the absence of anyone else on the beach!
