Meet Valeria Vittori, head winemaker at one of the most exciting family estates in Montalcino – famed for their highly sought-after Brunellos.

She knows our members have loved her estate’s reds in the past. So last year she contacted our Italy buyer Leo to ask if we’d like her latest creation.

Sarageto is a luxurious Super Tuscan, using the finest parcels of Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot to create a deep, dark, chocolatey wine with gentle oak influence.

Luciani is a historic family estate close to the hilltop town of Montalcino. Its buildings date from the 1200s to the 1930s. Before that, the land was owned by the church.

It has now been in the family for seven generations, with Francesco Luciani today as winemaker. The family works traditionally in the cellar, handpicking all the grapes at harvest time from their organic vineyards.

Aged three years in the large Slavonian oak barrels, this Brunello is a delight now, but best decant early. Or tuck away in the cellar: https://brnw.ch/21wPGNA

Paolo Monti's tiny, modern, solar-powered winery produces some of the Langhe region’s best value fine wines. His ’Dossi Rossi’ is a rule-breaking Bordeaux blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, topped off with with a splash of Nebbiolo. It's then given 12-18 months ageing in oak barrels, and another 8 years in the bottle.

It's very tasty and equally as unusual - a great tip from our Tasting Room.

We work with family-run wineries that we've known for generations. So whether it's produced by an environmental warrior who recycle all their rainwater, or a Moldovan Chateau supporting Ukranian refugees, our wines are always worth talking about.

It's time for another tip from our tasting room, and this week we're shining a light on a bottle exuding fine wine quality for an extremely modest price.

This top historic chateau of Corbières, gave our buyer Mark VIP access to their back catalogue of top vintages. He picked the ’18 out as his favourite.

It's made up of a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan blend and aged for 6 years. It's at its peak and perfect for drinking right now: https://brnw.ch/21wP6Qe

This week's tip from the tasting room comes in the form of a classic wine with a new look.

From the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja, home to ‘some of the best value wines in Spain, if not the world.’ Ermita is made exclusively for us by veteran winemaker Pamela Geddes at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. The new blend has been boosted by old vine Garnacha and a splash of Cab Sauvignon for extra depth.

Run, don't walk to snap up our Wine of the Month 🍷

Priorat is a tiny wine region in Spain, making up just 2,010 hectares of all the country's vineyards compared to Rioja's 65,000 hectares. Because supply is minuscule, the best stuff usually goes for huge sums.

But we've got a very good friend in the area, and when they have surplus bottles (often due to cancelled orders), they send them to us.

Decant for an hour to release deep dark berry fruit richness rippled with elegant spices like clove, pepper, and star anise.

Drinking wine, or painting with flavors?

Each shade reveals secrets about the flavours waiting for you in the glass.

Expect vibrant, fresh and light in the lemon hued wines, while deeper ambers will denote honeyed, nutty flavours. Garnet reds tend to be lighter, berry fruited wines, while deeper purple or ruby wines are usually richer with more baked fruit flavours.

What colour is in your glass? Let us know in the comments below.

Our Wine Guides are known for the excellent recommendations they make to our customers .... they can always be called upon for advice on what to drink.

They love Cascata Vinho Verde for its light, fresh and zingy style and tell-tale spritz. And at just 9% ABV it's great for a lower alcohol option.

Where do you think the first vineyards were planted in France? You'd be forgiven for assuming the country's winemaking history began in one of the big-name regions.

But vineyards in the Midi were actually the first in France ... pre-Bordeaux, pre-Burgundy, pre-Rhône.

And here, winemaking is still a passion more than a business. No smart suits, no fast cars, no big marketing budgets. And while the rocky soils and steep slopes make for truly glorious scenery, it means machines really struggle. It's a labour of love by hand ... and it’s hard work.

With fewer restrictions than more famous appellations, inspired winemakers have more freedom to unleash their creativity and experiment in the pursuit of making great wine. And they do ... it's just more fun in the Midi!
