Yes the rumours are true……

After nearly 35 years of faithful service to our community, DayToday (Prestonpans Village Store) aka Ashiq’s will be CLOSING its doors permanently on the 28th February 2022. The family want to begin by thanking all of our lovely customers for loyally coming to our store day in and day out. We have made some amazing friendships that will no doubt transcend beyond this closure.

We would like to thank all our staff, throughout the years, who have helped us to get to where we are, in particular to Rachel Cunningham who has been a loyal and dedicated employee for nearly 30 years and counting.

We have not come to this decision lightly, both myself & sister came here as toddlers and were raised in this community. As a close-knit family store, we have watched your children and their children grow up and both Ashiq & Shad have taken great joy in serving you and your relatives, having given more than half their lives to the store. I will personally miss all the jokes & laughter that we have shared with many of you, and having an ear available to listen to your personal hardships.

But 2020 has taken its toll, what with my personal accident and then covid having a huge impact on our family, with the crazy number of hours that we were putting into the store, which you have all borne witness too, with maybe a handful of days off and no holidays, has taken its toll and we are now looking for an opportunity to rest. You may not have been aware but in the early part of 2021 we were subject to one of the biggest thefts occurring in Prestonpans in the last few years. You are aware that my son burnt his face at the end of the Summer of 2021 and it was at this point that the family took stock of our incredibly busy lives. This has all culminated with our electricity quote for 2022/23 which was more than doubling come June. This exceptional cost, as well as others coming through the legislative pipeline primed the situation for our exit.

Personally, I am looking to devote more time to my lovely wife Hira who has stood by me all these years throughout all the hardships and my young children Harris, Niall & Daniel.

Can anyone help with the job detailed below? Tag away...

Remove the internal doorway and all combustible material associated therewith and make good the opening with a solid dense concrete block wall (no less than 140mm thick) tied with steel straps to the existing walls either side. The mortar joints should be flush pointed on the shop side and coated with 3no coats of white masonry paint.

It was great to welcome Anas Sarwar to Prestonpans today for some by-election campaigning with our brilliant candidate, Colin Yorkston for Preston / Seton / Gosford Ward.

As well as visiting the Pennypit Trust, we also stopped off for a chat with local shopkeeper Ferhan Ashiq about the importance of independent retailers' contribution during the pandemic and the shop local message for consumers.
