We had a fantastic day at OWC yesterday with the team from Top Selection and Egon Müller visiting us in Oxford.

It was a masterclass in Riesling and an incredible opportunity to try some top quality examples! Riesling truly is one of the most fascinating varieties.

We're delighted to share that The Oxford Wine School's programme of WSET course dates for 2024-2025 has now been published.

The Oxford Wine School has been growing every year since we began offering accredited Wine and Spirit Education Trust courses, and this year is our biggest yet. We are offering ten dates for Level One, four for Level Two, and two for Level Three.

All courses are held at The Jericho Wine Rooms - a dedicated tasting space above our shop on Little Clarendon Street, and are taught by our two educators John Shuckburgh DipWSET and Tim Bradley DipWSET.

Tiefenbrunner are one of the most lauded wineries in Italy’s Alto Adige, where they produce exceptionally pure and elegant wines from their mountain-influenced terroir.

Christof Tiefenbrunner is the fifth generation of his family to manage the historic estate, which dates back to the 13th century. His approach combines tradition and innovation to create a range of wines which are classically delicious, and in receipt of worldwide acclaim.

What a way to start the week!

Yesterday at our HQ we were visited by Charlie from Opus One Winery and Pete from Goedhuis Waddesdon Ltd for a stunning tasting of Opus One. It was remarkable to taste a wine curated by two power-houses of the wine industry.

Join us at the Jericho Wine Rooms as we celebrate the wonderful world of rum! You’ll meet rum makers, talk to experts and brand ambassadors, and taste some of the finest rums on the market.

This week our 2023 Bordeaux En Primeur tasting took place at the Oxford Wine Cellar, hosted by Min Yee.

We had over 40 wines available to try, from famous names like Châteaux Branaire-Ducru, Cantenac-Brown, Giscours, Phélan Ségur and Yon-Figeac, as well as some more "everyday" drinking options such as Châteaux Beaumont and du Glana.

We are very excited to welcome Champagne Arnaud Tabourin to The Jericho Wine Rooms this May. This family-run grower Champagne house is located in the heart of Riceys where they cultivate their vines on deep limestone soils.

We discovered Champagne Arnaud Tabourin several years ago and they have since become a firm favourite of the OWC team and customers. At this masterclass we will taste four Champagnes: the Arnaud Tabourin Brut Tradition, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs and Rosé.

This promises to be a delicious insight into a quality-focused grower Champagne house – we’ll see you there!

There’s so much to love about the South African wine industry today. Pioneering producers are bringing wines to the market at quality levels that seem to increase every year. Talented newcomers are bursting onto the scene with wines that push boundaries and redefine what we thought SA wine was all about. Old vine heritage is being rediscovered and preserved.

Ribera del Duero is well-known for some of the most famous reds in the world, but have you discovered their whites?!

Albillo Mayor is an ancient white variety that can be found throughout Spain, but recently has been approved in the DO of Ribera del Duero. This unique variety is incredible versatile and can age in oak beautifully. However, it is very delicate and fickle grape to grow, working well on nutrient poor soils, specifically at altitude, which is why it's perfect for a mountainous, desert-like region such as Ribera del Duero.

Bodegas Arrocal make a beautiful example of Albillo Mayor , from 20-year-old vines that sit 934m above sea-level. Harvest is done by hand, ensuring the best grapes are picked for the wine, with the wine being aged in 12 month in oak, providing a rich and creamy finish.

Saturday 4th May will see us open the doors to the Inaugural Oxford Sparkling Wine Show. Held at the Jericho Wine Rooms above our shop on Little Clarendon Street, this event will bring together multiple producers to celebrate the wonderful worlds of Champagne, English Sparkling, Cremant, Cava and more. You’ll talk to experts and brand ambassadors, all whilst tasting some of the most delicious sparkling wines on the market.

Each table at this walk-around tasting will be hosted by one of the fantastic producers and importers we work with daily here at The Oxford Wine Company. You’ll have the chance to hear everything there is to know about some of your favourite sparkling wines or try a hidden gem for the first time. Plus, the accompanying booklet will provide plenty of supplementary information for the wine geeks amongst you!

Your ticket price gets you entry to the event, as well as an unlimited number of wine samples to taste. We will offer all wines on show at a specially discounted price should you wish to replenish before a month of Bank Holidays and BBQs on the day of the event.

There will be two sessions on the day from 15:00 to 17:00 and from 18:00 to 20:00.

The price to attend this event is £30 however, if you book your place before Wednesday 10th April you’ll pay just £25

As a company full of wine nerds, we were absolutely delighted when Julia Harding MW got in touch to tell us that she and Jancis Robinson MW were giving a talk at The Oxford Literary Festival to celebrate the publication of the new edition of The Oxford Companion to Wine. At this fascinating talk, we heard about the origins of this seminal work, and the journey from first through to fifth edition.

A talk about wine wouldn’t be complete without a glass of something delicious, and we were delighted to help with three different wines, selected by our esteemed speakers from the OWC range.

Each wine was chosen for its link to entries in the book, which were explained as we tasted.
🍷 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc 2022 was the best kind of Marlborough Sauvignon – vibrant, tropical and ever-so-slightly smoky.
🍷 Zuccardi Apelacion Cabernet Franc 2019 from Paraje Altamira, Mendoza, was ripe and balanced, maturation in concrete barrels and large old foudre giving the palate roundness and texture.
🍷Château des Carles Fronsac 2018, from Bordeaux – a 100% Merlot which, while tasting great now, we thought would age very well for several years.

And last but not least, Emily's pick for International Women's Day! The wonderful Baia's wine, made by the Georgian winemaker Baia at her winery in Imereti Georgia.

Here's why Emily chose it...
"One of my all time favourite wines! Baia and her sister are two Georgian women in their twenties who took over their grandparents' vineyard and turned it into something truly special. Honouring ancient traditions and working biodynamically, their wines are truly handmade. Baia's amber wine is a fantastic introduction for anyone looking to experiment with traditional Georgian wine. "

Next in our series is Artelium Blanc de Blanc 2015, chosen by Min Yee who manages University and Coperate Sales.

Artelium was founded by Julie Bretland and her husband, releasing their first wines in 2021, and since then have absolutely stormed the English wine scene, winning countless awards year on year.

Min Yee says, "This is an award-winning English sparkling wine that has everything you would expect from a vintage Blanc de Blanc. Fresh & crunchy fruit on the nose are perfectly balanced by rich toast and brioche notes on the palate. Absolutely delicious!"

Katy has been working with us for four years and is the Retail Marketing Manager. Her choice is Illimis Chenin Blanc, a South African wine made by winemaker Lucinda Heyns.

“This is one of my all time favourite wines and has never disappointed! Made by the incredible Lucinda Heyns, this wine is beautiful poised with rich, plump fruit balanced with savoury roundness. Always a pleasure to drink and recommend - an inspirational wine.”

With Women’s International Day at the end of the week, we thought we would celebrate and share some of our favourite wines made by women & presented by the women of OWC!

Manda is one of our part-time retail staff members and has been working for us for nearly 5 years! Her choice is Nyetimber Cuvee Chérie, made by head winemaker Cherie Spriggs.

Manda says: "I chose it because I love English sparkling wines, and this off-dry citrusy-honey offering from pioneers Nyetimber recalls celebrating my friend's 60th birthday alongside finger-food and cake.”
