The debut full-length album from the young New York 5-piece indie-rock band is here and it’s ready to be the soundtrack to your year! ‘Scream From New York, NY’ sees the band expanding on their scratchy shoegaze sounds to include the sonic symphonies of 90’s icons such as Sonic Youth, Interpol & Radiohead (Bends-era), as well as modern post-punk pioneers such as Fontaines DC and Iceage. Urgent and contemporary but with a nostalgic nerve-centre that will make you feel you’re re-hearing your favourites for the first time all over again. Stellar stuff!

“Arriving in 2022, Irish artist Meryl Streek was unaware of the impact his clash of experimental electronica and explosive punk would have on the music scene around him. Armed with just a microphone and a laptop, in less than a year the Dublin based producer went from playing his first show in a local squat to performing live at Kentish Town Forum, London, supporting post-punk legends Public Image Ltd. Meryl Streek’s debut album ‘796’ (2022) cemented itself as one of the most visceral, important political records of the decade so far, with one critic praising it as “the most incendiary and important punk rock album of the year” (Paul Brannigan/Louder). Though rooted in Irish socio-political commentary, the album’s themes resonated with people around the world, leading to live performances across Europe and as far as Gran Canaria. ‘Songs For The Deceased’ once again saw the Irish artist enter Darklands Audio with producer Dan Doherty (Fontaines D.C.). The outcome is a kaleidoscopic fusion of news samples, distorted guitars, electronic beats, and traditional Irish music, all laying the foundation for Streek’s impassioned spoken word performance. To push the music into new spaces, Meryl Streek invited guest musicians to collaborate. Benefits’ Kingsley Hall provides spoken word to the album’s ‘Interlude’, Cal Graham from UK punks The Chisel appears on ‘Dogs’ and influential guitarist Oliver Ackermann (A Place to Bury Strangers) delivers a feedback soaked outro for the song ‘Murder’….”

🔝🎶VENUS VINYL OF THE MONTH - MAY 2024🎶🔝

May’s pick was so hard it took us all of June to finally decide! But in the end, it just had to be the latest Vegyn album. Vegyn, aka the British producer Joseph Thornalley, has worked with some of the world’s biggest rap and R&B artists (Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Kali Uchis), as well as putting out a vast amount via huge mixtapes. Last year he also released a favourite of ours in a self-titled number under the name Headache (also released on his own label PLZ Make It Ruins). The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions is a mix of downtempo electronica, clubby breakbeats and euphoric instrumental hip-hop. This will be one of the best electronica albums of the year!

🪴Lily Blakely🪴
Lily Blakely is a freelance illustrator and cartoonist based in Norwich. She draws primarily by hand with ink and brush lines, and adds colour digitally. A graduate of Illustration from Norwich (2018), Lily’s main passion lies in narrative-based work and comics. In 2021, her graphic novel “Gristle” was released by ShortBox. Lily has worked on all kinds of projects, ranging from book covers, album artwork and merchandise design, to branding illustrations and editorial work. Clients include GQ, BBC, VICE, Little White Lies, Gyre & Gimble, Darkroom Chocolate and more.
