For more savoury filling choices, pair wines as you would normally choose to enjoy with the meat, cheese, vegetable or other key ingredient in your dish. As a general rule, dry wines, that are light to medium bodied tend to work best. The key is not to overpower the flavour in your food! If you’re a fan of big, bold red wines - especially on a cold winter’s night - then look no further than Brazil!

While the country certainly boasts some impressive sparkling and white wines, the largest production volume actually comes from the ‘red’ category. The reasons for this are many but include history, climate, geography, soil types and cultural preferences.

Both blends and single varietal labels can be found, often featuring well known ‘international’ varieties such as Merlot, Malbec, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, although Brazil doesn’t have any indigenous grape varieties, there’s a growing trend towards more unusual varieties, for example Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot, Marselan, Teroldego, Touriga Nacional and Tannat.

Many of the above are aged in barrel, usually French and/or American, from between three months to two years, while the oldest red wines in our Go Brazil portfolio date from 2018.

Kicking off this coming Friday 28th February is the annual Rio Carnival, the world’s biggest, an extravaganza of colour and sound that runs through to Saturday 8th March!

The premier samba schools have been rehearsing for months – recently in temperatures approaching 40°C – but around now it is the unofficial ‘blocos’, semi-organised neighbourhood groups, who hit the streets.

Whereas millions of tourists, both from within Brazil and overseas, pour into Rio de Janeiro to witness the spectacle, many locals (‘cariocas’) will be escaping the city and enjoying a week or so on the beach, or perhaps up heading up to the much cooler mountains of the interior.

Lesser known, and on a smaller scale, are the carnivals of Salvador and Recife, the two largest coastal cities of the northeast – but well worth a visit!
