HWC PRESENTS: BEAUJOLAIS šŸ‡«šŸ‡·

To continue on with the Nouveau celebrations, weā€™re excited to announce the next installment in our regional/country explorations: Beaujolais!

Beaujolais is the first French wine region I truly loved with their easy drinking, approachable style & is still one of my go to regions. It also has a very special place within the natural wine movement, often referenced as the ā€˜birthplaceā€™ of the French natural wine revolution - the legendary ā€˜Gang of Fourā€™ (Jean Fouillard, Guy Breton, Jean-Paul ThĆ©venet & Marcel Lapierre began experimenting with low-intervention winemaking here in the 1970s and became the inspiration for so many winemakers across France and now the rest of the world. But the Beaujolais of today is not just about fruit-forward, light-medium bodied Gamay, its full of exciting winemakers making bright & lean Beaujolais Blanc, Rose and even some fizz, and some are even experimenting with hybrid grape varieties to help tackle ongoing climate changes.

Join me at 7pm on Thursday 28th November (one week after Beaujolais Nouveau) to taste through the range of wines this region had to offer - Ā£40 for 5 wines, snacks and a good time!
Tickets on sale tomorrow from 10am - see you there!

Beaujolais Nouveau 2024 is almost here!

Beaujolais Nouveau is one of the most special days in the wine calendar - the day when the very first bottles of the new vintage are released just weeks after the September harvest.
For Nouveau 2024 we will be pouring the nouveau cuvƩes from two of our favourite Beaujolais wineries: Selene and Raphaƫl Beysang & EmƩlie Hurtubise, alongside other cuvƩes from around the region. We will also be serving selections of French Cheeses & Rilettes all night long!

Seleneā€™s Sylvere Trichardā€™s family has been farming grapes and making wine in Beaujolais for generations, and Sylvere (along with partner Mathilde) has emerged as a hot new star of the area since taking the reigns in 2012. Aside from an occasional inclusion of minimal sulphur at bottling, their wines are made with no additions.

RaphaĆ«l (originally from Alsace) and EmĆ©lie (from Quebec) met while working for separate winemakers in the Auvergne, before eventually joining together when RaphaĆ«l was offered vines in the south of Beaujolais. Their Nouveau is one of the only unfilled, unsulfited nouveaus on the market and so is a true expression of the idea of nouveau - the first taste of the vintage. Itā€™s energetic & wild but always fun to drink.

Walk-ins only, Thursday 21st November from 5pm - see you there!

HWC Presents: Women in Wine (Part 2)

Itā€™s been (just over) a year since the first HWC tasting and to celebrate Iā€™ve decided to revisit my favourite subject of all - women in wine! Promoting and stocking wine made by women winemakers and women-led wineries is always on my mind but, in an industry in which women winemakers are definitely the minority they can be hard to come by.

Despite being a male-dominated industry, the history of winemaking is littered with women trailblazers and connections. The ancient Egyptians believed that wine was a gift from the goddess of fertility and so the connection to women goes back for centuries, but so does the exclusion of women. In that very same Ancient Egypt, upper-class men would have jars of wine placed in their tombs after death to allow them to enjoy the afterlife. Women, however, were not allowed wine in their tombs for fear they would get drunk and act in a promiscuous fashion in the afterlife.

As we enter the 21st century, more and more doors are being opened for women to be a part of the winemaking scene. Itā€™s becoming more common to find women as winemakers, vineyard managers and sommeliers - the likes of and .renom to name a few inspirations.

Join me on Thursday 7th March at 7pm to celebrate more women in wine and one year of HWC! Tickets on sale from 12pm Monday 28th October, limited as always. Ā£40 for 6 glasses, snacks and a good time!

What an absolute pleasure it was to host our first evening with . Thanks to everyone who came down and ate so many delicious oysters, fish and chips etc and drank so much wine! The Bosquet fizz with sea bream ceviche was a real winner. Look out for more dates in November and December!

The fun doesnā€™t stop there though, weā€™re back open on this lovely Saturday with lots of fantastic new additions to the menu. A deliciously tart Spanish peach sour from Scottish mix ferm wizards is tasting great.

If youā€™re after something more autumnal we have a beautiful Nero Dā€™Avola from pouring, tasting wonderful with loads of rich cherry, chocolate and smokey notes.

Plus - Pies, olives, crisps and all the usual affair, open from 2. Youā€™ll like it, tell your friends.

Early Autumn Round Up šŸ‚

As the temperature drops and the evenings grow longer, our drinks selection slowly adapts to match the changing of the seasons.

On the beer board youā€™ll find richer more decadent stouts like the wonderful Nicaraguan Coffee Nitro Stout from in slide 1. Also, coming up we have 2 Oktoberfest Biers from & with traditional warming, smooth biscuit flavours to cut through the bracing cold weather.

In the fridges and shelves all of your favourite wine styles will still be there but weā€™ll be leaning more into wines with rich, textured & winter fruit characteristics, but still with immense drinkability.
Some stand outs to bridge the gap from late summer to early autumn include:

- Red
A blend of Pinot Noir, Dornfelder & Cab Franc itā€™s full of tart cranberry & blackberries but with a real bright acidity to balance.

- Les CĆ“ts Hauts
A punchy Malbec with blackcurrant & peppery red fruit flavours but made with young grapes with allows a lovely brightness and freshness.

Thereā€™s loads more on offer, come find out for yourself! šŸ

IN BRUGES-ISH TAP TAKEOVER STARTS TODAY! šŸ‡§šŸ‡Ŗ

To celebrate our birthday week we have a quite frankly ridiculous line up of beers to form our Belgian & Belgian inspired tap takeover.

The starting line up includes

Oude Lambik - 3 Fonteinen
A blend of 3 consecutive lambikken brews starting in 2019 and then aged in a French oak barrel and transferred straight from barrel to keg

Oude Kriekenlambik - 3 Fonteinen
Local organic sour cherries are macerated on young lambic for 7 months and then aged and blended on a total of 10 lambik before release.

Jelly King - Bellwoods (as seen in photo 3)
A legendary dry hop sour beer from Canadian heroes Bellwoods. A real favourite of ours from trips to Toronto. When a small amount of kegs finally made their way to the UK it was a must.

With many others pouring or on the way including -
Questsche Tilquin - Queuzerie Tilquin - A blend of 1,2&3 year old lambiks aged with Damson Plums.
Holy Goat - Unicorn Wizard - As close as the UK comes to lambic. A Belgian sour yeast strain is blended with Spanish white peaches.
Holy Goat - Rogue Planet - A Nicaraguan Coffee Nitro Stout. A punchy export strength smooth delicious stout.
Blanche De Bruxelles - Brasserie Lefervbe - a classic, fresh, easy drinking Belgian Wit.

These beers are all very special and will be pouring all week!
