Candy had the purr-fect solution when severe flooding meant one of her older customers couldn't get into our Melksham store to buy her cat's favourite food.

The lady, who's 83, is recovering from a broken back and cares for her husband, who has Alzheimer's. When she phoned the store to share her predicament, Candy said she'd drop off the cat food pouches to her home after she'd finished her shift as she lives nearby. Candy said: "She phoned to see if we had any of the cat food in stock, and we did. She said she would try to come in to collect it, but I told her 'no way' was she coming in, as a lot of the roads were flooded. It was no problem for me to drop off three boxes of cat food for her on my way home. She was extremely grateful, bless her ... and so was her cat!"

Bev from our East Retford store stepped in to help when a lady out shopping with her six-year-old great niece couldn't find a bag containing her house keys, purse and phone.

She traced the lady’s steps around the store while another colleague used CCTV to see if it had been dropped, but to no avail. The little girl was getting quite upset by now so Bev got her some sweets to cheer her up and then drove them home, as a neighbour had a spare seat of house keys. The lady later discovered she'd left the bag in a park.

Bev said: "I made sure they got home safely and the lady was very grateful; she couldn't thank us enough. It's just what we do though, it's part of the job. We are here to help." Bev has been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for her actions.

Porter Matt from our Kingshill store saved the day for a local shopkeeper when he found £3,500 in cash which they had dropped in our car park.

The customer was taking the money to the bank, but on the way took his wife to a local GP before calling in at the store, which is when disaster struck. Matt was doing a final check of the car park before finishing his shift when he spotted what he thought was a pile of leaflets on the ground near the trolley bay. He went to pick it up and to his shock discovered it was bank notes tied together with rubber bands.

He immediately handed it in to store manager Stewart, who put it in a safe place. As soon as he realised his mistake the customer began retracing his steps and was back at the store within half an hour of Matt handing in the money. The customer headed straight to the customer services desk, where he was able to tell Stewart exactly how much money was missing and where he thought he must have dropped it.

Matt, who's 49 and has worked at the store for 15 years, said: "To say I was surprised was an understatement! I'd never seen so much money. I scooped it all up and took it inside the store and handed to my managers."

Stewart said: "The gentleman was extremely lucky and very grateful to get his money back. It was a lot of money! Matt showed what a fantastic colleague he is, acting with honesty and integrity. He is a credit to himself and also Asda Kingshill. We're all so proud of him."

Home shopping drivers Jonathan and Semih from our Wrexham store came to the rescue of two motorists whose cars had got stuck on snowy and icy roads.

Jonathan was making deliveries in the city when he noticed a car with a young child inside was stuck on the side of the road. He parked the van at a safe location and managed to push the car to safety. He then stayed until he saw the driver safely carry on with her journey. She posted a message of thanks on X, saying Jonathan "deserves a medal". The lady said: "I got stuck on a hill in the ice and he was the only person to get out and help me. He pushed me and my son up the hill and I’m so so grateful."

In the second incident, Semih came across an electric car which was stuck in the snow and ice. Like Jonathan, he parked in safe location and helped the owner get on her way. The store's online trading manager Craig said: "It was very community spirited of them both, going the extra mile to help out. The weather has been bad but our drivers have been soldiering on."

Seventy-nine-year-old Ken – who's been blind since the age of 12 – shops in our Woodseats supermarket in Sheffield every week with his guide dog Prince and says he is so grateful to our colleague Kyle and the rest of the team for the way they help him.

Kyle supports Ken round the store, passing him items so he can feel the size and shape, and pointing out special offers before scanning and packing his shopping. Ken said: "I'm really grateful for the help I get. I thank them all every time I go in. I've been to other stores and they haven't treated me half as good as Asda do. If Kyle's not in when I go in then one of the other colleagues will help. They are all really nice."

Kyle said: "Ken's such a lovely man. I've got such a good relationship with him now as I've been doing it for more than a year. I just ask him what he likes and put it in a basket. He knows what he's come in for as he doesn't have a list. I never mind doing it for him. I just make sure he's alright and doesn't want for anything."

When a customer fainted in our Parkgate supermarket in Rotherham, service colleague Chloe was on hand to catch her before she fell to the floor.

The lady, who's in her late 70s, was a bit shaken up, so Chloe chatted with her, got her a drink and a chair to sit on and then, when she was feeling better, packed up all her shopping. Not wanting the lady to walk to the bus stop on her own, Chloe drove her home, made her a cup of tea and stayed with her for a while to make sure she was okay.

Chloe, who's 29, said: "The lady looked so white and was shaky. I asked her if she was ok and then she passed out. Thankfully I managed to catch her, otherwise she could have been hurt. The lady has been back in the store since and when she saw me she gave me a big hug and thanked me again."

People over 60 can enjoy a hot meal for just £1 in Asda Cafés throughout the Christmas holidays and the rest of winter as part of our Winter Warmers initiative.

The Winter Warmers meals – soup, a roll and unlimited tea or coffee – are available in all 205 of our Asda Cafés until the end of February all day, every day. Winter Warmers runs alongside the Kids eat for £1 offer which continues to be hugely popular, with around five million meals served since its launch in June 2022. We've served half a million Winter Warmers meals so far this winter and Ian McEvans, our Commercial Vice President Fresh and Frozen, said: "We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income. We hope it will make a real impact across the winter months for those who need it most."

When a recently widowed customer was struggling to choose an air fryer so he could continue cooking at home in stepped Mitcham store manager Bryan who not only offered advice but also drove the customer home with his new purchase.

Bryan said: "The gentleman was in is 80s and had recently lost his wife. He wanted an air fryer so he could remain self sufficient. We looked at a few and he decided on one and I then asked how he would get it home as he walked with a stick. He said he was going to carry it, so I got my car keys and drove him home. It was a ten-minute drive but it would have taken him quite a long time to get back on his own. I just felt that it was the right thing to do. The gentleman had been through the wringer recently so it was the least I could do. My grandparents have passed away now, but if they’d been out shopping and were struggling and someone had done that for them then I'd be over the moon."

Throughout the festive season our community and customer champions have been helping to combat loneliness and isolation as part of our Don’t Be Gnome Alone this Christmas campaign.

They've been spreading festive joy by organising and helping at Christmas parties for over 60s clubs, delivering Christmas cards to care homes and helping local groups and good causes who've received festive grants worth £600,000 from the Asda Foundation. The Sunlight Dementia Café in Gillingham, Dorset used its grant to put on a Christmas tea dance. Emma, community and customer champion at our Gillingham store, went along and said: "It was a brilliant afternoon. There was a professional singer singing Christmas songs and we had a visit of children from the local school. They sang a few songs too and, as they left, were each given a selection box."

Karen, community and customer champion at our Tonypandy store, helped with a Christmas party for the clubs who attend Canolfan Pentre. Community and customer champion Sejal and colleagues from our Southgate Circus store visited the Five Oaks Care Home in Barnet and handed out goodies to residents and staff. Sejal said: "It was so heartwarming to see the elderly residents' faces light up when receiving their gifts." And in Glasgow, our Toryglen store's community and customer champion Liz made sure members of the Happy N Healthy community trust had a fantastic Christmas party. She said: "They enjoyed a magical day – it's been great to work together to make Christmas special for everyone."

This is such an inspirational story about our colleague Dom, who’s one of our head office colleagues. Thank you for sharing it Dom 💚

Dom’s life changed in 2019, when a mole on his back turned out to be malignant melanoma. This Christmas, Dom is grateful for the gift of time with his family 🎄

After moving to Leeds, his wife, Lizzie, encouraged him to see a new GP, who referred him for further tests. There, Dom was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, which had already spread to his lymph nodes. This eventually led to the diagnosis of stage 4 cancer.

Since then, Dom has undergone 67 rounds of immunotherapy, which have shrunk his tumours and allowed him to keep living life to the fullest. Despite facing challenges, he remains positive and active, inspiring others with his strength.

“I’m proof that research works,” he says. “You can still live your life.”

Dom would like to thank all the amazing NHS teams, friends and family for all their wonderful support.

Thank you Dom, for sharing your story. We're wishing you and your family a joyful Christmas and a Happy New Year ❤

Happy Christmas everyone! 🎄🎅

Throughout the festive season our community and customer champions have been organising a series of events to bring people together to as part of our “Don’t be gnome alone” campaign to help combat loneliness and isolation in the over 60s.

They’ve been supporting a whole range of activities, including our Winter Warmers £1 meal deal initiative in our chatty Asda cafes, joining other amazing colleagues in wearing Happy to Chat badges to let people who might otherwise be alone know that they're available to talk to them, and delivering £600,000 worth of grants from the Asda Foundation to put on festive activities to bring groups together.

We hope all our customers, colleagues, and the local communities we serve have a very merry Christmas.

Colin's friends say he’s the spitting image of Max the Gnome from the Asda Christmas advert – so they’ve teamed up to send him lots of his little likeness to cheer him up as he recovers from treatment for blood cancer.

Colin, who’s 68, is back home for Christmas in Cumbernauld with his wife Ailsa after a bone marrow transplant, and every day the postie arrives with another Max, customised to match some of Colin’s favourite things – from Rangers, Tennents and Irn Bru to pinball and The Walking Dead. They’re up to 22 so far with more on the way.

Colin and Ailsa, who shop in the local Asda, are part of the UK pinball community, attending conventions and fundraising events, and it’s pinball friends across the country who have come together to show their support after one of them spotted Colin’s lookalike Max in the Asda ad.

Colin, who’s a retired postman, said: “The gnome thing is absolutely crazy. Every time I walk by they give me a wee smile. They have cheered both of us up. There are a lot of lovely people around.”

He says: “It won't be the same this Christmas because we have to be careful about infection so it'll just be us two – and the gnomes – for Christmas dinner."

Ailsa, who's 59 and a retired nurse, said: "It's so lovely and touching and very sweet of the pinball community to send support and love in their own special way. The first one came in while Colin was still in hospital and it was for me – to look after me while I was on my own. I just burst into tears of joy.”

She says: "We have been in floods of laughter, as have the postmen and women, when the gnomes have been delivered. We're the talk of the sorting office here in Cumbernauld!”
