Closed Xmas Day and Boxing Day.

Then we’re open from Wednesday the 27th through to New Year’s Eve from 8.30am-5pm

You know the picture of my dad in the Community Fayre article about TopKens.

Well there’s a bit more to the picture than what was printed, and I thought it was worth sharing the full photo and the story behind it.

The picture’s taken of my dad being presented with a trailer that he’d been awarded for buying the most biscuits on a promotion night in a local Cash & Carry back in the halcyon days of 1973.

Just look at the flares on Ken, fashion icon of Wussa or wot, you can see who I take after.

Anyhow standing beside my dad, is Rams and England legend Colin Todd.
At the time of the photo Derby were Division 1 Champions..Coyr, and Toddy was capped by his country 27 times..!!!

Now can you imagine this was a cold winters evening in North Derbyshire and we’d got todays equivalent of Harry Maguire (but loads better) promoting biscuits to earn an extra few quid on his night off..!!!

And the thing is, it wasn’t just this once, it was a regular occurrence, me and my dad were on first name terms with half the Derby County 1st team on the strength of this sort of thing..unbelievable or what, can you imagine if this sorta thing was going off nowadays, I’d be down that Cash & Carry and I’d have more trailers than Ifor Williams.

I don’t know…they also had forest players doing the same thing on different occasions, but we didn’t buy anything on those evenings..😂

I was up way before the crackerdorn this morning picking these up, it might’ve all been in vain though coz I’ve only just been able to put em out..all because it never stops blooming raining.
Anyhow I wanted to get them on display, coz amongst them is the first daffodils and tulips of the season..🌼 beautiful.

If anyone would like to secure a Luke Evans Pork Pie for Xmas, I’ll need your order for noon tomorrow, they’ll be available to collect Friday and Saturday. Usual great product at last year’s price, and I think they rival Birds for quality.

Same goes for Luke Evans bread and cake, if you’re looking for a large quantity of anything in particular let me know before noon tomorrow, also even though we’re open Wednesday after Xmas they’ll be no fresh bread until Thursday 28th

Very sad to hear of the recent passing of John Cheung.
I think he came into Ken’s 7 days a week until he wasn’t well enough to come up into town anymore.
We always enjoyed a bit of banter when he came in, he was certainly one of the characters of Wirksworth.

Just reminiscing about Top Ken’s closing, and thinking back to the 70s when Ken’s used to be the main grocery outlet in the area.
What happened was…Ken used to give out an offer sheet most weeks called, “Ken’s Top Ten”
It was printed on A4 paper and was really popular with the shoppers of the day.
Then when I started working there, after a while I was graduated into doing the offer sheet, and I decided to put a bit of a slant on it by calling it Ken’s Crazy Top Ten…good thinking or wot?

Well that went down really well…
Then when Ken went on holiday, just to see if anyone was taking any notice I used to call it Krazy Ken’s Top Ten, which went down even better…I thought it did anyway…until he found out 😂

So anyhow after all that, in Homage to Ken’s Crazy Top Ten, this week we’ve got…
