Let me tell you a (quite long - sorry!) story about our gorgeous little gin shop!
Rewind back to 3+ years ago when we distilled gin in our garage at home... we used to get messages daily asking if people could nip and grab a bottle, as they didn't want to pay postage, or needed something straight away. Unfortunately we had to say no - as licencing laws don't allow you to turn your home into an off-licence, and have members of the public coming & going at all hours (plus I'm normally in my PJ's by 7pm, and I couldn't keep my house tidy 24/7!)
But we did vow, that as soon as we had a 'proper distillery', we would have a shop-front too!
Fast forward to July last year and we opened our lovely gin shop & distillery, packed with our full range of gin, as well as gift sets, little ginny bits & pieces, and even guest gins so that we can support other small distillers like ourselves.
During the week we are busy beavering away in the distillery, so we have a buzzer on the shop door if anyone wants to pop in the shop.
But on a Saturday we have someone sat there manning the shop all day 10-4, then our distillery tours start at 5pm.
Yesterday... we had 1 person come in all day, and spent £30. Last Saturday - again - 1 person came in and spent £10. (THANK YOU to those two people - we appreciate you more than you realise!!🙏💙)
But unfortunately 1 sale in 6 hours doesn't anywhere near cover the Saturday wage bill, let alone the overheads, not to mention its a very boring day for whoever is sat there for 6 hours...
Now I'm not here to beg for custom - quite the opposite, I know money is tight for everyone, I'm more curious - as when we didn't have a shop - there was a massive demand for us to have a shop!! In theory, Saturday should be our busiest day but it's just so quiet recently.
On the other hand, our Saturday distillery tours are our most popular ones and always fully booked - so I have 2 questions -
💡1. Should we shut the shop on a Saturday afternoon and add an extra distillery tour at 2.30pm?
💡2. Has the 'shop local / support local' bubble of the last few years now burst??
We need to somehow keep ticking over, so if that means evolving with the times then tell us what you want! Let us know!
