Community Shop, Cafe and Hub run by volunteers and paid staff. We supply fresh and local produce, including....

Meat delivered from local butchers Rob Rattray from Aberystwyth an Bow Street butcher. Local pork sausages and burgers from local Tyn Y Gors, Ynyslas. Local organic milk from Llaeth Jenkins Milk, 2 miles away. Delicious preserves and chutneys made by our "Jambusters" team of volunteers.

Weekly delivery of sourdough on a Friday morning from local bakers, Rye & Roses. Fresh british floweres from Grace & Crabb when available. A great selection of home made cakes made on site. Welsh chocolate from Gwynedd confectionary & Richard Spencer's lovely honey from Taliesin. Einions Garden from Furnace supply us with salad leaves, squashes, tomatoes and corguettes in season, they do not use any artificial pesticides, so you can be sure your 5 a day are even better for you. Many more of the local residents grow and supply the shop with an assortment of salads, vegetables, fruits and flowers from their own gardens. These include produce you just can't buy in the supermarkets, like the rightly famous Bardsey apples. We can send you home with a fabulous array of Welsh produce from the essentials like bread, milk, butter and eggs all the way up to sea salt, handmade soaps, local organic milk, speciality cheeses, loads of local beers and even gorgeous sparkling wine. We stock an assortment of organic, gluten- and dairy-free products along with refills for Ecoleaf laundry, handsoap, fabric conditioner and washing up liquid, just bring your own 1tr bottle. If all you want is your daily paper, bin bags and a can of baked beans we're happy to supply you with these too! Our cafe currently offers indoor and lots of outdoor dining plus takeaways. Menu includes soup, with vegan option, sausage (including vegan), bacon and egg sandwiches, plus pre-made cold sandwiches. Hot food til 3pm Mon-Sat & 2pm Sundays. From 11th April we will be offering breakfasts again. We are proud to say that with the exception of the bread we make all of our baked goods on site. Always something on offer that's gluten-free and/or vegan. Proper cakes, made with real butter, free-range organic eggs, a wealth of experience... and love. Brought man's best friend with you? Well behaved dogs are welcome in our covered outdoor seating area. We have plenty of outdoor seating in our Pollinator Friendly Garden. A bit of revision today. A couple of things we've covered before:
flour (blawd) and gluten-free (di-glwten) which we'll take a bit further.

There are various words for 'flour', depending on area. Blawd is most common, but you'll also hear fflŵr and can. blawd can is generally white flour.

Self-raising flour is blawd codi, plain flour is blawd plaen. You can use blawd codi to pobi cacennau blasus (to bake tasty cakes - just like our kitchen staff do). Wholemeal flour is blawd cyflawn or blawd gwenith.

When you dust something with flour it's 'blodio' or 'blawdio'.

Obviously, normal flour made from wheat (gwenith) contains gluten, but we sell freee blawd di-glwten. Note that's freee - a brand name, not free (rhad ac am ddim). We insist you pay for it!

Oh yes, and 'blawd llif' is sawdust. Not to be used to pobi cacennau! [llif = (a) saw, but also a stream, flow or current]

It's chilly (oerllyd - remember?) but Spring is nearly here. (Mae'r Gwanwyn ar fin cyrraedd). Today I spotted my first primroses (briallu) of the year in Taliesin. A single primrose is briallen. There's a Rhiw Briallu (Primrose Hill) in Llanbadarn Fawr. There's also a Primrose Hill in London with a Welsh connection. It was the place where Iolo Morganwg organised the first meeting of the Gorsedd of Bards in 1791, which became the National Eisteddfod. If you learn Cymraeg to a high enough standard you can sit an exam and become a member of the Gorsedd (order of Druids, green robes). Something to aim for? (Rhywbeth i anelu ato?)

Back to primroses - no, Cletwr doesn't actually sell them. But we do sell daffodils (cennin Pedr - lit. Peter's leeks). Pop in and buy some bright Spring colour for your home. Ga i dau dusw o gennin Pedr plîs? Cewch, tair punt os gwelwch yn dda. (Can I have two bunches of daffodils please? You can, three pounds please.)

Crowd-funder Update.

Won't someone put us out of our misery?

We're just £70 short of hitting £20,000 on the Cletwr crowd-funder. Is there a kind person or two who will help us hit the two-thirds-way point? Of even better, a kind person with £10,070 spare to get us to the target?

Things are going well - the impact of the donations so far is already visible in the shop, with more goods on the shelves, but there is still a lot to do.

Braf oedd gweld 15 o bobl yn sesiwn Dal Ati yng Nghaffi Cletwr y bore 'ma

Great to see 15 people at the Dal Ati session in Caffi Cletwr this morning - too many to fit in the Cwtch! They had to overflow to the sofa.

Dal Ati is at 10.30 on the first and third Saturday of the month, BUT... ⭐⭐⭐CHANGE OF DATE!⭐⭐⭐

Next month, the first session will be on the 8th, not the first. Second session on the 15th as usual.

What comes to mind when I say ‘waffle’? Politicians talking without saying anything (siarad gwag, malu awyr). Or perhaps you think of frozen potato waffles*? (wafflau tatws – yum!)

But the real connoisseur thinks only of one thing. Mention waffles and the name “Tregroes” fills their thoughts, with blissful memories.Tregroes waffles are a Welsh delicacy. I have to admit that the Cymry didn’t invent them, basically they're Dutch stroopwafels, but Waffles the team at Tregroes near Llandysul perfected them and made them part of Welsh culture.

The original version is two crispy layers with syrup (sirop) between them. There is a way to eat them that makes them even better, a closely guarded secret known only to the entire population of Cymru. Take your waffle and put it on top of your coffee mug for a couple of minutes. This warms and softens it, and turns it from delish to pure magic.

Oh, did I mention, we sell Tregroes waffles. Currently we have the original ones, but also two amazing chocolate-coated ones (plain and milk) and, something different, a Tregroes waffle cracker, with no sweet filling, which goes very well with some nice Welsh cheese (caws Cymreig)**

Rumour has it that in England today is celebrated as St Valentine's Day (Gŵyl Sain Folant). Of course, here in Cymru we celebrated lurv (cariad) a few weeks ago on 25th Jan, Gŵyl Santes Dwynwen.

If you feel like celebrating with someone special, I suggest you take them for a slap-up all-day-breakfast (brecwast drwy'r dydd) at Caffi Cletwr. Very romantic (rhamantus iawn) - just don't drip red sauce on your clothes. I won't be doing this as we don't allow cats in the building.

Or perhaps buy your loved one (eich cariad*) a bar of chocolate (siocled)? Cletwr sells lots of choccie, but for a special treat, why not a bar of Cletwr Chocolate! Made in Bala, possibly from cocoa beans (ffa coco) grown on the slopes of Yr Wyddfa**

* other words for this: sboner = boyfriend, wejen = girlfriend. I don't think Cymraeg has caught up with a non-binary equivalent yet, best stick to 'cariad'.
** actually, more likely in West Africa. The Bala bit is true.

We would like to thank Cronfa Eleri and Ynni Amgen for donating £3500 towards our plans to revitalise Cletwr.

The money will be used to pay for:
⭐ Additional road signs, to attract more visitors to the cafe and shop
⭐ Blackout roller blinds, to allow us to run evening events over the Summer
⭐ New digital projector, again for events
⭐ Gardening tools for the gardening group, including some child-sized things for their sessions with the Talybont School children
⭐ A new computer to improve our administrative systems

Unusual vegetables! (Llysiau anghyffredin)*
Today we have some Jerusalem artichokes in stock. Which, as we all know, aren't artichokes and have nothing to do with Jerusalem. In Cymraeg, artisiogau Jerwsalem, although a botanical name is gellyg y ddaear (earth pears). 'Jerusalem' is a mistake for 'Girasole', which means sunflower (blodyn haul, heulflodyn) in Italian. Twice a month we hold a Dal Ati session at Caffi Cletwr in Tre'r Ddôl where learners can meet up with friendly fluent speakers and practice chatting over a paned.

1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 10.30-11.30 in Caffi Cletwr (or earlier if that's more convenient, 9.30 onwards). All welcome, just turn up.
