As we continue to shine a light on some of our favourite female producers, we couldn't go much further without talking about . After taking over her family's vineyard, she is experimenting with different vessels and methods to make pure, honest Albariño’s that reflect the region's climate and proximity to the Atlantic.
giving us the full low down, g’wan Joel...
‘Constantina is descended from a rich familial heritage of winemaking in Rias Baixas, Galicia. This Atlantic terroir is the very wet and humid home of Albariño, where the “pergola” system is used. Here, vines are widely spaced and hang up granite posts that match the soils below, covered with canopies, which helps to combat humidity and to avoid mould and rot.
ROSALINA
Made from 30 year old Pergola trained Albariño, whole bunch direct press, aged on stainless steel on the lees for 11 months. This makes for a more hazy golden colour than Albariño usually gives. Fresh, refreshing and saline on the palate, with notes of peach, lemon, and a hint of oregano. This would make a welcome addition to a seafood meal.
SAUVAGE
Made from skin-macerated Albariño undergoing spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Pigeage three times a day, after which it is racked to Tinaja (amphora) on its fine lees and aged with continuous batonage. Unfined and unfiltered but the lees are decanted out before bottling. Colour is slightly amber, with a copper tinge. Nose is enticingly aromatic, with stone fruits emerging later. The palate is quite light, but very energetic and mineral, with a juicy and long mouthwatering finish. Notes of fresh apricot, nectarine skin, dried herbs, and hints of salted pineapple. Albariño like you’ve never had it!’
