We now proudly stock beautifully handcrafted jackets from made in North Vietnam . Read their story ! On the door today we have ..Yam dyed Daily Jacket with a vintage pleated Vietnamese batik and indigo skirt ... so swishy ! Pretty turquoise block printed Turkish Oya square cotton scarf with intricate needle crochet border .. the work in it !

Always appreciate these bold applique squares originally from canopy panels made in Rajasthan circa 1940 ish ... hand stitched on khadi cotton .. graphic ,freehand and inspiring ... these have been made into cushions .. ..

Detail of one of our vintage "Oya" square cotton scarves . Block printed in Eastern Turkey on fine cotton muslin , then beautifully worked with "needle" crochet technique ... these were made to be part of a woman's trousseau and are very often found unused carefully stored in a wooden chest for decades ... I bought quite a few , marvelling at the elaborate crochet work of each and every one ...

Spring cleaning / clearing the shop shelves and having a move around of the textiles and carpets .. enjoying myself ! Such pretty colourful pieces all made by hand .. clever artisans whoever they were .. In these pictures we have vintage textiles from Peru , Morocco , India and Romania ... they seem to speak to each other nevertheless !

Spring Simple .Bold Geometric . Vintage hand woven rugs with fabulous tassel detail ! Woven by women as part of their dowry , (although providing dowry officially became illegal in India in 1961.)These look like they might have been made around that time ....

Beautiful detail in our indigo tie-dye embroidered kimono! It is made from a fine cotton and can be worn as an over jacket or as a dressing gown! Exclusive & limited collection! #tiedye dye # dressinggown #kimono #indigo #handmade #cotton #colours #blue #embroidery

Printing with patience...this is how the fabric is block printed by a skilful careful artisan .No pins, just straightening of the fabric, the bar is there for precision to make sure this huge piece of cloth is printed at the correct right angle.The yellow colour is made from a plant called Kadukkai. Block printing is just one part of the process ..the fabric has to soak for three days to get rid of the starch then prepared so it is ready to take on the natural dye which of course has had to be dried + ground and made into a printing paste ,then it all needs to be steamed with salt from the sea ...!

Gallery196 is an emporium of colour, exuberance and artistry, bringing together exotic textiles and craft from across the world to a small corner of Primrose Hill.

As owner and buyer, Sue's aim is to find genuine pieces, celebrating the integrity, skill and often humour of the artisan. Having gone to work in India as a weaving professional over 30 years ago, Sue continues to find inspiration in the strong cultural identity of an ever changing continent. She has good friends and connections, built up overtime, and is full of admiration for the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the people. While the fine craftsmanship of yesteryear may be in decline, in its place emerges a young generation of designers taking the indigenous craft skills and reinterpreting them.

Sue's many years of industry experience has led her to working as a lecturer and consultant in India, Egypt and the UK. She continues to enjoy mentoring and encouraging new enterprises to ensure that these skills are kept alive.
