Autumn 🍂... blanket wrap scarf ... layers ...textiles and texture ..all handwoven , tapestry and tassel detail in the wrap ... we saw them weaving these while Gujarat India .. stopping and starting as they carefully weave in the detail ...patterns past down through the generations .

Time for a wrap ... antique Khes throw ... cotton ,hand woven in Punjab in what is now Pakistan ... a pre partition rare textile. Nonetheless robust and reversible both sides pretty .Divine as a bed / sofa / shoulder throw ...we have a fabulous selection of these pieces in the shop .

Antique pleated Indigo batik / painted skirt from North Vietnam . It's a stunning piece in perfect condition ... kimono top made from special cotton ikat fabric I sourced in Yame province Japan . An area that specialises in this type of weave . Only two pieces were made , now just one left !

Fabulous textiles from Bhuj , Gujarat . Silk caftan clamp dyed ,batik painted and dyed using indigo and madder natural dyes ... a long complex process .. but then all hand made beautiful items are !
Cotton indigo bandani ( tie dye ) shawl . The fine cotton shawl is hand woven and many knots are tied before immersing the shawl into indigo dye baths ... at least 12 times to get this darker colour . The knotted areas resist the dye and after undoing the thread a beautiful pattern emerges .. an age old craft but rarely do you see them this fine !

STORY

Gallery196 is an emporium of colour, exuberance and artistry, bringing together exotic textiles and craft from across the world to a small corner of Primrose Hill.

As owner and buyer, Sue's aim is to find genuine pieces, celebrating the integrity, skill and often humour of the artisan. Having gone to work in India as a weaving professional over 30 years ago, Sue continues to find inspiration in the strong cultural identity of an ever changing continent. She has good friends and connections, built up overtime, and is full of admiration for the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the people. While the fine craftsmanship of yesteryear may be in decline, in its place emerges a young generation of designers taking the indigenous craft skills and reinterpreting them.

Sue's many years of industry experience has led her to working as a lecturer and consultant in India, Egypt and the UK. She continues to enjoy mentoring and encouraging new enterprises to ensure that these skills are kept alive.
