To end the week's theme, we have the Bergsig Cape LBV! 🍷

The term "Port" is reserved for wines from the Douro Valley in Portugal. However, LBV is a popular style of Port that is not patented or protected by the EU. Although Bergsig grows Touriga Nacional, Portugal’s signature red grape, this is made from Tinta Barroca, another well-established Port variety.

This wine has an inviting, garnet-red appearance, with warming fruitcake richness on the nose with Morello cherry, sandalwood and Clove aromas.

It is a little richer and sweeter than its Portuguese cousin, with flavours of blueberries, Kirsch and Marzipan, making it an excellent pairing with chocolate and chocolate-based desserts.

It also works nicely with full-flavoured blue cheese and crackers! 🧀

Next up is the Bergsig Pinotage, a lively, generous wine that is a traditional South African variety. 🇿🇦

Once upon a time, Pinotage was very much a ‘Marmite’ variety with a small but incredibly loyal following. Pinotage does vary in style quite a lot, ranging from light and fruity for drinking at a cooler temperature right through to full-on, full-bodied powerhouses and everything in between.

This wine is a powerful, full-bodied red with masses of rich, aromatic plum and spicy dark berry fruit complemented by sweet oakiness and firm, ripe tannins.

It pairs excellently with spicy dishes or particularly barbequed food. 🌶🍗

Happy Chardonnay Day! 🙌

Chardonnay is still statistically, one of the most popular white grape varieties. It is also extremely malleable, giving winemakers plenty of options in terms of what style they can produce, which is why I firmly believe that there is a Chardonnay out there for everyone!

The Bergsig 'Barrel Fermented' Chardonnay is a fantastic example you might want to try! 🤩

It is fermented and then aged for six months in 300-litre oak barrels before bottling. Deep straw/pale gold, with silver tints with medium and viscosity. A rich, leesy nose with a bright, lemon & pineapple fruit with hints of lanolin & delicate vanilla oak. Broad, creamy mouth feel with a tang of acidity, ripe orchard fruits & warming, toasty oakiness with good length & a rich, creamy finish.

It pairs wonderfully with poultry, seafood, creamy pasta dishes, and cheese boards. 🧀🦞

This week, we're celebrating the fantastic wines from the award-winning Bergsig Wine Estate. This family-owned vineyard is nestled in the beautiful Breedekloof, a rising star in the world of South African wines. 🇿🇦

First up, we have the Bergsig Gewurztraminer. Being an (extremely) aromatic variety, it tends to fare best in relatively cool climates. With the fruit naturally having a high sugar content, these wines tend to have a little sweetness, making them an excellent pairing with mildly spicy Southeast Asian food. 🌶

The wine has a pale straw appearance with silver-gold tints with surprisingly high viscosity. A fresh, fragrant nose with elderflower, orange blossom and a hint of pear drops. Crisp, fresh and just off-dry in the mouth with a vibrant acidity with grapefruit & ripe, green apple fruit.

At just £10.50, it's a steal that you won't want to miss! 🤩

In the latest YM Liverpool issue, Jon discusses a multi-award-winning South African winery with conservation and sustainability at its heart. 🇿🇦

Bergsig Estate is located in Breedekloof, an up-and-coming wine region nestled in the foothills of Hex River and Drakenstein mountains. Being classified as an ‘Estate’ they can only make wine from fruit grown on the property with sustainable farming practices, though not officially organic. The farm covers 437 hectares, focusing on conservation efforts and optimal grape quality.

Happy Pinot Grigio Day! 🥂🇫🇷 🇮🇹

The 17th of May marks National Pinot Grigio (Pinot Gris) Day! This grape variety originated in France as Pinot Gris. Still, in recent years, it has garnered more popularity worldwide as Pinot Grigio, thanks to the Italian production method.

The Italian style is light-bodied and crisp with predominantly citrus flavours. The French, pick the Pinot Gris grapes when extra ripe and make a fuller-bodied style of wine with less acidity and more tropical flavours.

Here we have two popular examples that you might want to try. Head Over Heels Pinot Grigio is showing very well and proving very popular at the moment! An aromatic display of lime zest, golden apples and lychee, leads to a very approachable, crisp and lively palate of lemongrass, pear and white peach.

And my personal favourite, the Princes Abbés Pinot Gris from Domaines Schlumberger in Alsace! An intense wine with notes of yellow fruits, mirabelle plum, peach, barley and liquorice. A deliciously complex wine that keeps on giving. The finish is long and satisfying.

Happy International Sauvignon Blanc Day! 🌍🎉

Today is International Sauvignon Blanc Day! 🌍🎉

This iconic grape variety was first planted in France in the early 17th century and derives its name from the French word "Sauvage", meaning wild, as the vines look similar to wild grapevines.

Sauvignon Blanc is a popular grape variety grown in many parts of the world. In recent years, New Zealand has become synonymous with this variety thanks to its ideal climatic conditions and skilful viticulturists and winemakers.

The province of Marlborough produces some of the finest examples, located in the South Island’s northeast. The long, steady, cool-climate growing season provides the perfect environment for the grape to thrive. The resulting wines display a remarkable balance between vibrant fruit flavours and crisp acidity.

We're honoured to import Sauvignon Blanc from various parts of the world and bring it to thousands of tables across the UK. Our Penny Lane Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from Marlborough vineyards and features the distinctive passion fruit and gooseberry characteristics, extraordinary purity, and intensity of flavours associated with New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.

So, why not treat yourself to a glass of Sauvignon Blanc tonight? 😄🎉

A powerful wine from Puglia - Borgodei Salice Salentino Riserva 🎇🍷

Rooted in centuries of history and tradition, this wine reflects the dynamic personality and expertise of winemaker Alessandro Michelon. 🇮🇹

The wine is deep violet red, it displays intense yet elegant aromas of blackcurrants, candied fruits, white pepper and spice. The palate is full-bodied, velvety and rich, with complex yet soft tannins and a long and persistent finish.

It pairs wonderfully with pasta al ragu, hard cheeses, game and other flavourful foods. 🍜🧀

Did you know that on April 17th, the world celebrates one of our favourite grape varieties: Malbec! 🌍🍇

This variety originated in France, but right now it is shining brightest in Argentina. 🍷

Malbec produces a full-bodied and deep-coloured red wine known for its ripe plum flavours and notes of dark fruit such as blackberries and dark cherry.

In Argentina, Malbec is more than just a wine - it symbolises work, culture, union and celebration. It's synonymous with purpose and the future - the people of Argentina are proud to share it with the world.

Our La Bonita Reserve Malbec comes from the vineyards of Mendoza. At just £9.95 it is an absolute bargain!

The Malbec of this sub-region has a reddish colour and aromas of red fruit such as ripe plums, cherries, raisins and some sweet notes like chocolate. The tannins are silky smooth and enveloping. The finish is nice and long.

We hope you can enjoy a glass of Malbec tonight. Happy World Malbec Day! 😊🎉🍇

The Reserve Malbec is full of ripe plum fruits, sweet tannins, dark chocolate and mocha. A full-bodied wine, with juicy tannins and flavour that lingers. Best enjoyed with full flavoured food.

Last introduction this week, I'm delighted to tell you a bit about the Viña Las Perdices 'Exploración' La Consulta Malbec 2018, a true masterpiece from the renowned Uco Valley in Argentina 🇦🇷

From relatively humble beginnings, this Estate now stands at 93 hectares planted to seventeen different grape varieties, some of which are relatively obscure/unusual, although Malbec, inevitably, accounts for the largest surface area! Malbec is very much the signature Argentine variety indeed it has become so synonymous that it’s easy to forget that Malbec originated in France where it is found in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley as well as various pockets throughout the south, but it is specifically Cahors in the south-west that is home to this most popular variety.

The Exploración range looks to showcase individual sub-regions with varieties to which they are specifically suited, with La Consulta a highly regarded sub-zone of the Uco Valley which is in itself regarded as one of the best areas for growing Malbec. 70% of the resulting wine is aged for 12 months predominantly in French oak Barriques. This is an expressive & surprisingly elegant wine with red & dark fruit aromas embellished by the subtle oaky notes with a hint of graphite in the background. It is supple & juicy in the mouth with blackberry & red cherry flavours backed by fairly gentle tannins with a lingering savoury finish.

This example has recently scored 89 points in Decanter's Premium Malbec tasting, it's available at WineTime for £18.50

Calling all Carmenère enthusiasts! 🍷 You should definitely try the Valle Secreto 'Key' Rapel Valley Carmenère Grand Reserve 2021

Valle Secreto is a boutique Estate of some 38ha in the upper reaches of the Cachapoal valley, about 130km south of Santiago. It was established as recently as 2007; a joint venture between two wine-loving families with a background in the food sector. Valle Secreto was awarded the ‘Winery Star’ by the Wine International Association at the start of this year. This is a global award for excellence which is awarded to wineries for quality and expertise and VS is one of only seventeen wineries in Chile to have been awarded this year.

As you would expect with such a relatively small operation (288 000 bottles per year), pretty much everything that happens in the vineyard is done by hand, and although not certified as organic, they very much work to those principles, aided by the wonderfully consistent climate here that largely negates the need for artificial fertilisation or pesticides.

Key is a new range of great value, single-varietal reds made from fruit bought in from the Rapel Valley. The Carmenère is medium deep, ruby red with a garnet rim with a richly fruity nose with damson, blueberry & redcurrant aromas with hints of cinnamon & cracked black pepper corns. The palate is medium - full-bodied, supple & juicy with generous, slightly spicy red fruit flavours with ripe, gently chewy tannins and a long, slightly mineral finish.

At just £11.50, this Valle Secreto Carmenère is an absolute steal, offering unparalleled quality and value. It's an entry way into the Viña Valle Secreto EWGA Wines

Las Perdices Albariño Reserve 2021 - £16.50

Viña Las Perdices story started with Juan Carlos Muñoz who emigrated from Andalucía, Spain in the early 1950’s to grow grapes to sell on to wine producers. It was his two sons Juan and Nicolás who in 2004 decided to take the next step making wines for themselves and building their own winery in the highly regarded Agrelo district within Mendoza, Argentina’s pre-eminent wine growing region.
Globally, Albariño has rapidly established itself as one of the more popular white varieties being delicious to drink as an aperitif but really coming into its own when paired with fish or seafood. It is believed to have originally come from Northern Portugal where it is known as Alvarinho, but it is over the border in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia to the north of the Minho River that it has really come into its own, and it is from there that its now global recognition has flourished, with increased plantings throughout the southern hemisphere.

This excellent example is from fruit grown in the highly regarded Agrelo sub-zone of Mendoza some 1030 metres above sea level. It is crisp & fresh, yet rich with a delicate peach character typical of the variety with a long, mineral imbued finish. There is a school of thought that suggests that Albariño could actually be related to Riesling, and whilst genetically, this doesn’t appear to be the case, both varieties do have the capability to age well, certainly by white wine standards. Hello wine lovers! 🍷 I'm thrilled to introduce you to the Altitudes Viognier Gran Reserva 2023 from the stunning vineyards of Chile! 🇨🇱

Altitudes is a range of varietally labelled wines that are exclusive to EWGA. These wines are made and bottled for us by Maola, a Chilean wine producer that specializes in own label (not the American ice cream company!). They have their own vineyards in Colchagua, Leyda and Maipo as well as being able to source from a well-established network of growers throughout the country giving them access to an incredibly broad palette of regions and varieties. They are a sizeable operation with a total capacity of 11 million litres of wine per year – a scale that allows them access to the best oenologists, consultants and equipment in the country.

Pale to mid-straw with silver-green tints & medium+ viscosity. A fresh 'green' nose that is both vegetal and citrus and there is plenty of peach & apricot character natch, with a distinct flintiness & a hint of cut grass. The palate is very dry with quite a subtle citrus & stonefruit with quite a piercing but balanced acidity with a long, clean finish. This is surprisingly fresh, precise & mineral in style when compared to a lot of Viognier from the southern hemisphere, but it is beautifully taut & nuanced with a refreshing vibrancy.

At just £9.50, this Altitudes Viognier offers great value – a must-try for any wine enthusiast looking to explore the exceptional terroir of Chile. EWGA Wines

Viva Veneto! Amarone della Valpolicella 🇮🇹🍷

An outstanding, concentrated, example of this much sought-after wine, in a modern style from a small, 3ha vineyard at Negrar that takes its name from the light, limestone soil within. Unusually, this is made from 100% Corvina which was hand-picked with very low yield. Once picked, the extra ripe berries are left to dry out in the Fruttaio (a purpose-built, very well-aerated drying loft) where they can lose up to 50% of their water content. These air-dried grapes then undergo a long, slow maceration & fermentation before ageing for 20 months in a mixture of French and American oak Barriques.

The wine has a lovely deep garnet colour. It exudes aromas and flavours of sour black cherries, dark chocolate, coffee, and raisins. That it is full-bodied is a given (Amarone is invariably 15%+!), but despite its power, the palate is soft, supple and well-rounded; spicy and elegant, with an extremely long finish.

Viva Veneto!

This is a really ‘serious’ Bordeaux-style blend and is the flagship red from Colli Vicentini – a brilliant Co-operative at Montecchio Maggiore that we have dealt with for many years. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot grown in the Veneto is, not unusual in itself as these two varieties are widely grown throughout the region. That having been said, ordinarily, these wines are light, fresh and juicy whereas Carlo V has a surprising heft and richness giving it a New World feel. Strict selection of grapes & 12 months of oak aging has given a serious red that is an opaque ruby-red in colour. Rich in ripe blackberry & Kirsch aromas on the nose with hints of new leather & prune. Quite full-bodied with plenty of dark fruit character nicely framed with a gentle oakiness.

Dry January? Why not Try January!? 🍷

French red anyone? How about La Forge Estate Carignan? 🇫🇷 🍇

Carignan is widely planted in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of south-western France where historically it was exclusively a variety to be blended with others. It is also grown quite extensively in Spain where it is known as Cariñena / Mazuelo / Samsó depending on the region. These days, it has become better understood that the key to ‘taming’ this prolific variety is to use the fruit of old vines which is less vigorous with better concentration. La Forge Estate is part of the Domaines Paul Mas ‘Empire’ with its focus on producing a diverse range of varieties grown in the Languedoc but offering a ‘New World attitude’. The Carignan is one of my favourites in their range – a rich, full-bodied red with a dark fruit character coupled with to***co & herbs with a hint of oak.

These are normally £12.25, but only £9.80 with the 20% discount code! 💢

Dry January? Why not Try January!? 🍷🤩

How about Valduero Ribera del Duero Blanco de Albillo...? 🇪🇸🌄
Before the 2019 vintage, white Ribera del Duero didn’t exist! White wines were produced, but were not recognised/approved by the DO, so had to be de-classified to Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. There are a few producers who always believed in and championed the native Albillo Mayor variety, and their perseverance was finally rewarded when the Consejo Regulador approved Ribera del Duero Blanco on the proviso that it was made from a minimum of 75% Albillo Mayor. Our heroine here is Yolanda Garcia-Viadero, founder and winemaker at Bodegas Valduero since 1984 and the only woman sitting on the regulatory council (Consejo Regulador) who has always been a fierce advocate for this variety. Her wine offers a rich nose with candied peach and toasted pineapple with a hint of lemon zest. Richly textured with a tangy acidity providing a foil to the citrus, stonefruit, and green apple fruit.
Normally £23.95 per bottle or £19.16 with the 20% discount!
