In 2012, an ancient Domesday village opened a very modern community shop with postal services, wifi and a cafe serving light lunches, snacks, home-baked treats, freshly ground coffee and proper pots of tea. Chiddingly Village Shop & Cafe is located in Muddles Green, East Sussex, and was created by a group of passionate villagers who wanted to put the heart back into this rural community. The Shop

acts as a village hub, with regular activities such as weekly French conversation classes, a monthly Gallery Wall showcasing work by local artists, a cafe with free wifi, and a postal point (with daily royal mail collection), providing information on community events, green issues and local producers. Chiddingly is surrounded by beautiful countryside where a host of local producers are still growing, farming, cooking, baking and brewing wonderful produce that the shop stocks – Golden Cross Cheese Company, Flint Owl Bakery, Windmill Bakery, SF Smithers meats, Hale Farm eggs and Ouse Valley preserves to name a few. The shop also promotes an ethos of responsible packaging and recycling by stocking refill items like quality olive oil and Ecover washing liquids and having their own ‘bags for life’. This not for profit co-operative is run by a paid manager and a wonderful team of village volunteers. A Community Share offer has led to many villagers making a unique ethical investment into their own community shop and thereby becoming members of the ’Chiddingly Community Shop Association’. Chiddingly Village Shop has ample free parking and outdoor seating where dogs on leashes are welcome. We extend a warm welcome to everyone, including hikers, dog walkers and cyclists; we always keep a dog water bowl freshly filled, offer free water bottle top-ups to cyclists and have installed cycle racks at the shop and local footpath signs around the parish so you can find us! Grants for the shop have come from WARR Partnership, Action in Rural Sussex, Village SOS – Big Lottery Fund, The Plunkett Foundation, Wealden District and Chiddingly Parish Council.
