- new from Vinyes Singulars…

For a grower who chooses to make over 30 different cuvées each year, some in quantities of just a few hundred bottles, we were never going to be able to definitively list everything hardworking Ignasi Segui has to offer all at once. Rather, we’ve deployed the revolving door strategy - keeping some staples in stock and introducing a bunch of new wines on each shipment. The latest of which has just landed in time for the upcoming seasonal festivities.

If you’ve not had the pleasure yet, Ignasi is the 22nd (!) generation to farm the family estate, founded in the Alt Penedès as far back as the 1400s. Combining the duty to upholding tradition with a restless, forward-thinking energy, Ignasi established Vinyes Singulars in 2009 as a new way of expressing the 20 hectares of vines that sit amongst a wider expanse of cereal crops, olive trees, vegetable gardens and forest. The entire surface has been certified organic since 2010.

The resulting wines are lithe and energetic, full of fresh citrus, oceanic salts and minerals. Extending on the organic work in the vines, they all ferment with native yeasts, are unfiltered and have no additions.

He’s pictured above by the hobs during his visit in summer this year.

Check stories for the 5 new listings and we’ll be pouring a selection of the wines at the wine fair this Sunday (where we’re also joined by in person). Order a bottle online (link in bio) or pick one up at our Leeds shop - we also wholesale to trade.

On that subject, our next and final trade tasting of the year is on Monday 18th November alongside & - get in touch if you’d like to join us!

Pre-Order your Beaujolas Nouveau 2024…

Nouveau 2024 has arrived in our warehouse and is now ready for you to pre-order in both magnum and bottle format. As is tradition, all orders will be shipped to arrive with you on the third Thursday in November; this year being Thursday 21st.

The first bottles of the September harvest - this is the brightest, freshest, juice you can get your hands on, the grapes still on the vines only a few weeks ago. A reason to celebrate, right?!

This year we are pleased to offer three different cuvées:

~ Séléné ‘’Primeur Domaine’ 2024 - made using Mathilde & Sylvère own domaine fruit in Blacé. The duo has made just the one cuvée this year.

~ Jean-Claude Lapalu ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ 2024 – made using old vine Gamay from vines in Saint-Etienne-la-Varenne, near the cru of Brouilly

~ Château Cambon ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’ 2024 – made old vine Gamay from vines in St Jean d’Ardieres. An estate part-owned by the Lapierre family.

Limited quantities available. Place your order online now and the wine will be shipped to arrive on your doorstep on Thursday 21st. Head to our website to read more and place your order.

Don’t forget, we’ll be pouring all three of these by the glass at our shop in Chapel Allerton for our annual Nouveau party on the 21st, alongside some other Nouveau surprises (Muscadet Nouveau anyone?). And of course, we have held back some bottles for you to buy at the shop to take home with you for your very own nouveau party – while stocks last! We’ll also digging into our cellar for some of those special non-nouveau Beaujolais bottles just for the occasion.

Yay Beaujolais!

Four new wines from Valentin Létoquart AKA Luberon’s Val de Combrès, plus his first visit to the UK later this week…

Les Champs Magnetiques, his shape-shifting macerated white from 2022 that we have cellared, plus three other 2023 debut cuvées, new wines that Val has never made before - Merlinpimpin, a pet nat of Gros Vert and Grenache, Bichette, a juicy, herbaceous red blend and Traquenard, a straight Syrah of complexity and finesse - something of a new direction!

It’s significantly bolstered our offering from this likeable, good-time grower, that spans the playful and easily consumed to wines of newfound depth that summon the Southern Rhône/Provençal borderline from which they hail.

All four wines, plus others from 2022 are available now at waywardwines.co.uk, from our Leeds shop or wholesale to the trade. Catch Val on the following dates where he’ll be pouring all seven of his wines in person:

Sunday 17th November - the annual wine fair, Stockport, alongside a bevy of great importers and guest growers.

Monday 18th November (trade only) - Soho, with our usual gang and who will also be bringing along their latest Catalan discovery, - RSVP if you would like to join us for what will (honestly) be our final tasting of the year!

New from Offbeat Wines…

We’ve just added new bottles from some of the most exciting UK producers out there. Dan & Nicola of Offbeat wines are working with passionate growers in the South West, they craft wines (and other drinks) which celebrate the quality fruit grown by responsible growers who work with care the utmost respect to the land. In the cellar, they work as naturally as possible, with wild fermentations and tiny production.

They represent another shining example of some of the exciting stuff that’s happening on the UK natural wine scene. Things we love to see! And hey, the weather may have taken an autumnal turn, but we continue to pour the liquid-sunshine ☀️

We’ve just added to our online shop…

• Watchtower 2023 - Super fresh, fruit-bomb Pinot Noir

• Loose Juice 2023 - One of the UKs first legal Piquettes, clocking in at just 5%

• Sunbeams & Rainbows 2022 – Hugely drinkable pet-nat cider

Head to our website to read more and place an order. You’ll find a selection of these bottles hitting our Chapel Allerton shelves over the coming weeks.

S A T U R D A Y

It’s another Saturday down the shop in Leeds and here are just a half dozen of the new arrivals to the shelves worthy for the weekend. L-R:

Benoit Rosenberger ‘6 Roses’ 2022
Sought-after Gamay d’Auvergne rosé. Incredibly elusive, available in the shop only.

Marzagana Elementales ‘Higa’ 2022
Other-worldly Tenerife Listan Negro from Tenerife, taut with volcanic energy.

Thomas Jacquin ‘Tony Truand’ 2020
Delicately extracted Jura Poulsard with a little bit of time in the cellar.

La Perdida ‘O Trancado’ 2022
Super-salty, light-bodied Galician red blending Garnacha with Mencia.

François Saint-Lô ‘Les Pouches Maceration’ 2021
Anticipating our Chenin party this coming Thursday we’ve brought up this fleshy skin-contact take on the grape, made in ancient troglodytic caves near Saumur.

Tutti Frutti Ananas ‘Toranja’ 2022
As the name suggests, a Mediterranean fruit crush of Grenache Gris and Macabeo from Banyuls-sur-Mer.

We’re open until 10pm this evening for drink in and take away with plenty to investigate on the BTG blackboard if you’d like to stay for a glass or two!

A R D È C H E I N C O M I N G

After a memorable visit to the UK from Jocelyne of Domaine du Mazel and Geraldine of La Vrille et le Papillon this summer, we’re happy to let you know we’ve had a welcome restock of their much-loved wines.

Since the late 90s Le Mazel have been a forerunner of the natural wine movement in this part of France, paving the way for many of the producers that are now synonymous with the Ardèche. La Vrille et le Papillon, also based in the village of Valvignères, are a great example of their influence; encouraged by Gerald and Jocelyne to establish their own organic domaine rather than selling their fruit to the local co-op. Both producers are, of course, making their honest, often rustic wines with zero additions at any stage in the process.

The following, including a Mazel back vintage with over a decade under its belt, are available now. Find them on our website for a more detailed write up on each wine and grower.

Le Mazel
Cuvée Mias 2023 (bottles & magnums)
Cuvée Raoul 2023 (bottles & magnums)
Cuvée Larmande 2023 (bottle only)
Cuvée Larmande 2011 (bottle only)

La Vrille et le Papillon
Fée Bulleuse 2022
Tous Cousins 2022

New Arrivals…

A quartet of favourites are available once again, either as a restock or a brand new vintage. Find them all on the homepage of our website or in the shop.

• Celler Comalats (Lleida, Catalunya)
• Marquesa 2023
• A five-day maceration of Picapoll raised in concrete tanks. Fleshy stone fruits, salt and spices at an attractive, everyday price point.

• Mikaël Bouges (Touraine, Loire)
• La Pente de Chavigny 2023
• Classic 100% Sauvignon Blanc raised in steel. Following the mineral-driven 2022 this is a welcome return to a more approachable, fruitier expression.
• Les Côts Hauts 2022
• A fantastic new vintage of this savoury Malbec. Perfect table wine for the autumn with its brambly forest fruits and peppercorn spice.

• Antonio Gismondi (Cerreto Sannita, Campania)
• Cerreto 2023
• A beautiful, gentle maceration of 100% Malvasia di Candia with altitude returns with the new vintage. A hazy gold in the glass, again it mixes pithy white grapefruit and green citrus with the earthy smoke and tension of volcanic soils, all at a breezy 10.5%. Small availability in magnum too.

Trade customers get in touch - we wholesale all of the wine we import directly ourselves. Our next tastings are Monday 21st October in Stockport and Monday 28th October in London. See previous posts for more details and drop us a line if you’d like to attend!

D É G U S T A T I O N

Our next shop tasting is coming up on Thursday 24th October! This time it’s a celebration of Chenin Blanc and another collaboration with our good friend Joel of .

The extra-special dimension is that the night will serve as the launch of Joel’s very own wine, made with friends Shaun Hencher and Andy Parkinson, using stellar grapes from the Anjou vines at Vins Hodgson, where there group worked on the 2022 harvest.

A 100% Chenin Blanc from two vineyards that usually go into the Hodgson’s Faia cuvée, aged in a barrel gifted to Mai & Kenji by none other than luminary of the region, Richard Leroy. It’s a rare single barrel Chenin of which less than 300 bottles exist, bottled by hand with no additions. After being lucky enough to taste it in barrel over a year ago, we’re so excited to host Joel, Shaun and Andy to pour it for you all for the first time.

With Chenin being the theme of the day, we’ve also put together a formidable lineup of wine made with the grape from both the Wright’s and Wayward Imports cellars for you to taste through on the night. Expect pours from across the Loire care of Noëlla Morantin, François Saint-Lô, Garo’vin, Thomas Puéchavy, Mikaël Bouges, and of course Vins Hodgson too.

The evening runs from 5-10pm and is free to join, drop in any time. Taste your way through the wines then stick around to drink the ones you enjoyed the most, by the glass or bottle, and have a chat with Joel and the guys. We will as usual be dusting some special bottles from the cellar to add to the list in addition - hope you can join us!
