We would like to say a massive congratulations to Kirkwall lifeboat crew member Paul Martin, who passed out as coxswain today. Paul was put through a detailed day of both written and practical assessments, including taking command of the SAR unit, as well as making sure the crew were carrying out the duties of anchoring, search & rescue procedures, emergency steering, and a fire drill.

Paul has been part of the Kirkwall crew for the past 16 years. Having worked at sea since he was just 16 years old, Paul stated it just seemed a natural thing to do progressing within his career at the RNLI. And thanked all of the crew for their support and patience this past few months.

Today pays tribute to the commitment and determination that Paul has shown to fulfil the qualities required in taking on the role as deputy coxswain of the Kirkwall lifeboat.

We would also like to thank Davie Orr, one of our RNLI assessor trainer’s who travels all over Scotland to put everyone through their paces.

More freshly chopped kindling in today 🔥

If my maths is correct, then that’s a total of 100 bags put to the shop & every single penny goes to the Soma’s Light charity, which is a very worthwhile local charity. Thankyou to everyone who has bought a bag so far & also those who have put their spare change in the bucket at the till 😀

We plan to keep selling kindling until the end of March, so anyone who has any spare, dry, scrap wood please get in touch.
