Yes, the clocks have gone back and the longer, darker evenings are upon us!

No excuse required then to crack open a bottle and relax a little with a wine which might just get you dreaming of warmer destinations, of which Brazil is certainly one in late October.

Here at Go Brazil our portfolio features exclusively Brazilian wines and while the country does not have any indigenous grape varieties, it offers both the familiar (Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc..) and the more unusual (Torrontés, Teroldego, Tannat..).

You won’t find our wines in your local supermarket: look instead on our website for further information: www.gobrazilwines.com

‘Why don’t we see much Brazilian wine?’ is a question we’re often asked.

The key reason is that Brazilian wine production is relatively small, and there is a large (and growing) domestic market, so only a limited quantity is available for export. Local bureaucracy and unfavourable taxation also act as disincentives.

Despite these restrictions, Go Brazil has been specialising solely in Brazilian wines since 2010 and has built strong relationships with our suppliers, most of which are privately owned, family-run wineries. We are therefore in the fortunate position of being able to import parcels of more unusual and/or premium labels, and always on an exclusive basis.

If you haven’t yet sampled Brazilian wines, perhaps now is the time to give them a try? We offer a range of mixed introductory cases, alongside a selection of around 60 different reds, whites, sparkling and rosé.

While much has been made of the trend towards ‘low and no-’ alcoholic drinks, driven both by health concerns and by Generation Z’s apparent abstinence, there remains a sizeable body of drinkers for whom a heavy-bodied wine (almost always red) is their preferred tipple.

We at Go Brazil see this firsthand, through our web sales and at the many consumer-facing events where we exhibit.

While excise duty legislation is set to change in February 2025, so that drinks with a higher alcoholic content (‘Abv’) will be taxed more heavily than those with a lower content, we do not forecast any great reduction in demand for the more potent, fully bodied wines. Quite possibly, in fact, we’ll see a backlash against lower alcohol wines – some of which will have been deliberately ‘de-alcoholised’ in order to meet lower price points!

Here at Go Brazil, we’re pleased to announce that we will continue to offer wines with 14%-15% Abv., or higher, dependent of course on the growing conditions of each vintage, and in accordance with what our winemakers (and probably nature) intends.

Lovers of ‘big’ reds should take a look at these two producers:

With businesses, schools and universities finally back to work after the summer break, perhaps now is the time to think about an autumn refresh of the wine cupboard (or cellar?).

Here at Go Brazil, we strive to keep our portfolio interesting, innovative and relevant: some of the newest additions include a Trad Method ‘orange’ sparkling wine; a delicious, lightly oaked Alvarinho; an intriguing, non-vintage heavyweight blend of Ruby Cabernet and Tannat; and a smooth-drinking Cab Franc/Malbec blend aged in concrete eggs (featured in the Guardian newspaper).

From our portfolio of around 60 wines, covering all the main categories, these are just a handful of the wines we could mention. For more information please see - https://www.gobrazilwines.com/shop/

Launched earlier this month, we’re delighted with the initial reaction to our website’s new ‘Bestseller’ category!

As the name suggests, we’ve highlighted those wines from across our portfolio (red/white/rosé/sparkling) for which we receive the most repeat orders.

This is not to say that the remaining +/- 50 wines not listed should be ignored or are without interest or quality. On the contrary, we have customers with wide-ranging tastes and requirements, so each and every wine has its place!

Our Go Brazil ‘Top 3 Wines for Autumn’ selection has now gone live, with all three labels (a white and two reds) available with a generous discount!

First up, the light and crisp Garibaldi Itálico Riesling, a low alcohol white wine suitable for everyday drinking; then our Sinais Merlot: soft, mellow and well rounded, it’s a real crowd-pleaser. Thirdly, by way of contrast, a heavyweight four grape red blend: ‘Assinatura’ is the Campos de Cima winery’s top-ranked wine, and this 2020 vintage comprises Shiraz, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. Robust and high in alcohol, this is very much a ‘food wine’, so best enjoyed with red meat dishes or fully flavoured cheeses.

If none of the above appeals, our portfolio numbers more than 60 exclusively Brazilian wines, so there’s plenty of other options to choose from!

While Brazilian wines are certainly underrepresented in the UK (mainly because their small scale production doesn’t allow for export to large supermarket groups), there remains in this country a great appetite for discovering lesser-known wine regions and wine styles.

Indeed, here at Go Brazil we are regularly invited to present our wines to audiences around the country: from small ‘at-home’ gatherings, to clubs, circles, societies, universities and U3A groups, through to large scale corporate functions.

While most tastings are ‘in-person’ events, these may also be self-tutored or occasionally held online, via Zoom or similar.

If you’re organizing a tasting programme for the 2024-25 season and would be interested to include Brazil, please get in touch via email: [email protected]
