So it turns out that Christmas Day in February is far more fun than in December. As wine merchants we’re not half as knackered as we were in December. As such I thought we should enjoy some spectacular wines. We started with a 1989 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru ‘les Referts’ by Then on to a very interesting bottle of German white from 2000 which was given to me with the knowledge that “God only knows what it tastes like”, well it was fabulous, just a touch of sweetness with a superbly balanced palate. Then on to one of my Christmas presents from Bridge, a bottle of Cote Rotie ‘Neve’ 2018. I tasted it just after opening at midday and it was quite closed but a few hours to breathe and it was singing from the rooftops. Supple, perfumed, opulent and incredibly engaging. What a cracking day.

10k race this morning, Christmas dinner this afternoon! As a reward I thought I’d pop open this bottle of 1989 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet ‘les Referts’. A bit of crud building up on the top of the cork but never let that put you off. Once it’s in the glass it’s a golden coloured delight. Layers of flavour with hints of dried orange peel and baked apples, the acidity is still absolutely fabulous, there’s plenty of life left in this wine. Looking forward to seeing how it opens up and how it’s goes with turkey and all the trimmings.

If you’re wondering why we’re having Christmas dinner in February it’s because oldest lad Joshua was in Australia for Christmas Day and said that turkey on the BBQ in 35 degree heat doesn’t count. So now he’s home we’re doing it all over again. Why the heck not.

So all of the hard work before Christmas is countered by a little silly fancy dress fun in St Ives. The whole town dresses up for New Year’s Eve and we like to take part. As Bridge had purchased a ‘Big Bad Wolf’ costume earlier this year then it seemed only fitting that I played the part of Little Red Riding Hood.

Back in the 90’s this was our biggest selling Brandy and I’d sort of forgotten it existed. I tasted it again recently and was reminded why we sold so many bottles, it’s superb! It’s a little pricier than it was 30 years ago but it’s definitely still an absolute bargain at £30 a bottle.

Whilst we’re in a KWV Ltd Edition Mentors sort of mood it seems appropriate to do the draw for a bottle@of the ultra hard to find Nebbiolo.

Day 22. It’s a Sunday! A little fine wine lovin.

Day 21. It’s a Saturday don’t forget so we are open 9:30 til 4:30. Not quite sure how I’m still standing.

If you want the perfect gift for a whisky lover then this is definitely it. Beautifully put together and featuring amazing whiskies from some top notch distilleries from right across the globe. £199 and worth every penny.
