When Josh from our Tonypandy store isn't helping customers with their Click & Collect orders he's serving the community as an on-call firefighter.

Josh, who's 27, carries a pager with him when he’s working at Asda so he can respond to calls and dash when needed to the Tonypandy fire station which is right next door. He said: "Working at Asda and also as a firefighter are two completely different jobs, but I like them both.

"The customers here are lovely and all know my name. Some of the regulars I chat to know I'm a firefighter as they've seen my pager. It's a very friendly store and everyone knows each other. We are very community oriented. If my pager goes off I'll just drop everything and sprint to the fire station which is just 30 seconds away."

Matt Jones, head of operational response for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS), said: "Employers like Asda play a crucial role in helping SWFRS provide essential fire and rescue cover across our communities. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our emergency response, often balancing their primary employment with responding to incidents that protect lives, property, and the environment. The flexibility and support offered by Asda allows our firefighters to respond swiftly when needed, ensuring we maintain resilience and continue delivering a first-class service."

Home shopping colleague Lewis from our Broadstairs supermarket came to the rescue when he found an 86-year-old lady with a bump on her head and looking confused by the side of the road as he walked to work early one morning.

Lewis, who's a former lifeguard, immediately phoned 999 for an ambulance and, noticing she felt cold on what was a very chilly morning, asked a colleague from the store to bring the lady an extra coat. Lewis held her hands and stayed with her, keeping her spirits up until medics arrived. The lady's daughter later called into the store to personally thank Lewis and to let him know that her mum's recovering well.

Lewis said: "I think I was just in the right place at the right time. I did what anyone else would have done. I'm just glad she's okay now."

The lady's daughter said: "Lewis is, in our view, the very epitome of a good citizen and Samaritan, and he deserves to be immensely proud of himself. Our family will be eternally grateful for his prompt actions."

Our Bolton store's community champion Christine has helped Be The Change Youth Project with an Asda Foundation grant for £17,000 to support their work empowering young people to be a positive force in the local community.

The group was set up in 2020 by Daniel after he lost a close friend to a knife attack. He said: "We are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from the Asda Foundation, which has played a key role in helping us grow and expand our impact. A special thanks to Christine who has been a fantastic supporter of our project for over two years. She has consistently shared funding opportunities with us and guided us through the application process, helping us secure crucial funding that allows us to continue making a difference. Her support has been invaluable, and we truly appreciate everything she has done for us."

The grant has paid for a new kitchen, where people including Christine will be running healthy cooking workshops to teach young people essential cooking skills, promote better nutrition, and support their independence. She said: "They're such a fantastic group, providing a variety of activities to young people in Bolton who otherwise wouldn't have a place to go on an evening."

Groups supporting young people aged 13-21 can apply for new Young Futures Fund grants, ranging from £500 to £1,000, from the Asda Foundation. The grants are worth a total of £500,000. Applications close on Thursday 13th March. Visit https://bit.ly/4gZplVe to apply.

Nineteen-year-old Joel – who’s working at our Caldicot store while studying to be a doctor at Cardiff University – put his medical knowledge to good use when he looked after a customer with epilepsy who collapsed while out shopping.

With the help of colleagues, Joel made the lady comfortable, kept her calm and reassured her. When the lady felt better, he insisted on driving her home, staying with her until family members arrived to take care of her.

Joel said: "The lady wanted to drive home, but I said I'd take her back just in case. I went in and had a cup of tea with her and waited for a while. She was very grateful as was her family, but I did what anyone would have done in the same situation. I'm just glad that she was okay in the end."

Newly-trained first aiders Jenny and Carol from our Swindon Haydon store immediately put their new skills into action when regular customer Kelly had a nasty fall on her way to the store.

Kelly badly gashed her head and broke a knee in the accident. Jenny and Carol were quickly on the scene, sitting with her in freezing temperatures as they kept pressure on her head wound and kept Kelly's spirits up while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. Their colleague Sheryl fetched hot water bottles and quilts to keep Kelly warm.

Kelly's making a good recovery and has now been able to return to the store to personally thank the colleagues for what they did. She said: "They're true superstars. I can't thank them enough."

Security colleague Carol said: "It was our first ever call out. The training we learnt just kicked in. I'm so glad Jenny was with me as we both worked off each other and took it in turns keeping pressure on the wound. It was my birthday that day too, so it's one that I won't forget in a hurry. Kelly was a real trooper throughout and it was wonderful seeing her again when she came into the store ... it was really emotional."

Food hall section leader Jenny said: "When they'd gone to hospital both Carol and I had a good cry. I was hoping to have to deal with something like a cut finger for my first first aid call out, not one like this!"

Nineteen-year-old delivery driver Jesse from our South Woodham Ferrers store turned pet detective to make sure a cat he rescued from the middle of a busy road got home safely to her owners.

Jesse was delivering to customers in Maldon when he saw the cat. He was worried she'd be hit be a car if she stayed there, so pulled over where it was safe, picked her up and carried her to his van. He took her to a nearby vet, but as the cat wasn't microchipped they couldn't tell him who she belonged to. Jesse took the cat to his girlfriend Izzie's house, and after feeding her they scoured local Facebook groups to see if anyone was missing a cat. It was there they spotted someone else had posted about seeing the cat in the road – prompting a comment from the cat's worried owners. Jesse and Izzie got in touch with the owner and dropped the cat off the following day.

Jesse said: "They were a really nice family and really happy to have the cat back. I'm just glad that we managed to get her back to them." Jesse has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for his kind act. The store's home shopping section leader Jack said: "We are all proud of Jesse for what he did. He is a very kind-hearted person and a pleasure to work with."

We're teaming up with the Children's Book Project to help give more children access to books.

We're setting up points in our larger stores for customers to donate pre-loved children's books. Last year our customers donated more than 100,000 pre-loved books into special collection trolleys which enabled every child in 140 primary schools nationwide to each choose and take home two free books of their own. For many, these were the first books they had ever owned.

To celebrate the relaunch our community champions will also be hosting reading activities and bringing ‘Storytelling Magic" to life in their stores and local communities in partnership with BBC’s Tiny Happy People. Community champion Hayley Carrington from our Sutton in Ashfield store, pictured, said: "The project was a huge hit last year with generous customers and colleagues donating lots of books and we are looking forward to it being a great success this time round."

Children’s Book Project Founder and CEO Liberty Venn said: “The support that Asda families have already shown for our work is incredible. It shows just how much parents understand the potential for the books they enjoyed with their children to make another child laugh or dream and to create shared reading opportunities at home."

When a regular customer drove for 40 minutes to do the weekly shop at our Milton Keynes store only to find her new bank card wouldn't work our checkouts colleague Elaine immediately stepped in to help.

The customer, who's in her 80s, was getting upset at the till when she realised she hadn't fully registered her new card and that she faced a long return trip with another way of paying. The customer shops at Elaine's checkout each week and, as she knows her so well, Elaine said she'd pay for the shopping and that the customer could pay her back the next time she called in, which she did.

Elaine said: "I didn't hesitate. I couldn't see her going all the way back home and back here again! She's a lovely lady and we always have a good chit chat. She was very grateful."

Elaine didn't tell anyone at the store what she'd done – but when he heard about it store manager Babur was so impressed that he nominated her for an Asda service superstar award.

Babur, pictured here with Elaine and deputy manager Mustafa, said: "She is really inspiring and has made me, the store and the company very proud."

Happy Valentine's Day to Angie and Rob, who are our Wolverhampton store’s very own Romeo and Juliet.

They met in the store on Valentine's Day 30 years ago when they dressed as Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers and gave out chocolates and sweets to customers!

Angie, who's the store's community champion, said: "Rob was a manager on grocery here at the time and I was working on ambient and someone asked me if I could dress up as Juliet and then they asked Rob to dress up as Romeo. The store hired the costumes for us and I had a proper Shakespeare-type dress and Rob had the tights and everything! Rob was a bit shy but he did it. It's just a shame we don't have any photos from that time."

Rob, who's now food hall trading manager at the store, later asked Angie out for a date and she agreed and the rest is history. The couple, who have a daughter, Alicia, were joined by friends from Asda when they got married five years ago. Angie said: "Everyone loves Rob and we get on well with everyone. When we are at work we just do our own thing – I do make him the odd cup of tea though. Living together and working together just works for us."

Happy Valentine's Day to them and to all our customers and colleagues.

09/02/2025

Nineteen-year-old home delivery driver Joe from our Westbrook store in Warrington came to the rescue when he found 81-year-old customer Thomas had fallen down the stairs and needed urgent help.

Joe suspected something was wrong when Thomas didn't answer the door, so called his son Julian, whose phone number was on their online order. With his permission, Joe and a neighbour went into the house, where they found Thomas lying in the hallway. Joe called 999, grabbed blankets to keep Thomas warm and chatted to him and his wife Patricia, who has Alzheimer's, until paramedics and carers arrived. Thomas has since made a good recovery. Joe said: "I'm just glad he's doing well. I hope that most of the people I know would have done the same thing. I just did what I thought was right."

Julian said: "Joe was fantastic and I believe he saved my dad's life. I am truly blown away by his concern. I live more than three hours away so he kept updating me by phone. His main focus was the safeguarding of my parents. He stayed with my dad until a neighbour I had contacted could sit with my mum once the ambulance took my dad to hospital. Joe's been asking for updates on my dad, which shows what a remarkable individual he is. I really can't thank him enough."

His sister Amanda also contacted the store to thank Joe, who she says "deserves a medal". She said: "The world is a better place because of people like this."

Zaavan from our Hyson Green store in Nottingham was driving to work when she saw one of her regular customers had been clipped by a car as she crossed the road with her pull-along shopping bag.

Asda customer Breda, who has arthritis, fell to the ground and suffered bruising in the accident. Zaavan ran to help Breda, got her safely into her car and brought to the store to be checked out by a first aider, before taking her back home.

Breda has made a good recovery and called in to thank Zaavan for her help. She has been shopping at the the store at least twice a week since it opened and always goes to Zaavan's checkout. Breda said: "Zaavan is a lovely lady and really looked after me. She made sure I was okay as I was a bit shaken up. She drove me home to my partner Paul and then she called round on her way home that evening to check on me and to give me some flowers, which was really nice."

Zaavan said: "I had to help her. I couldn't just drive past. It could have been a lot worse, I think I was in the right place at the right time. A lot of my regulars are pensioners and I like to look after them. If it happened to me I would want someone to look after me.”
